The first question, in GoF
Snape had the Dark Mark, and when Voldemort touched the mark, the Death Eaters felt it. If that's so, why didn't Snape tell Dumbledore that Voldemort had returned? He had to have known. He has the Dark Mark! But Dumbledore didn't know until Harry came back to Hogwarts, which was moments later.

The second question
If Snape was really Headmaster, when Voldemort killed him, why didn't his portrait go up on the wall? Why was Dumbledore's picture still behind the Headmaster's desk?
(I don't expect answers to these questions but I'm wondering who else thought that was weird)

I am actually going to answer question number two.

I don't think that Snape was considered a true headmaster, therefore, the school (or whatever put's the potraits on the wall) refused to put him there.

Rowling answered number two in a recent interview. Snape effectively quit his role as Headmaster by running off before his death, and therefore was not included in the portraits. She also said that Harry would likely fight to have him recognized and his portrait put up.

Question one: who knows? The mark had been darkening all year, and he could have put the surge of pain down as a sort of 'temper flare' of Voldemorts or, perhaps, another Death Eater pressing theirs in an attempt to find Voldemort. Besides that, they were at a public function (which likely required Dumbledore's unbroken attendance) with lots of people nearby. He couldn't mention it there and he couldn't pull Dumbledore aside to tell him.

I would have to agree with Alutian as well. There wasn't time between the mark burning and Harry coming back for Snape to have told Dumbledore anything. Much like the instance in GoF after Harry has watched Cedric die, he doesn't see the thestrals until he reaches Hogwarts in OoTP because of the shock he's been through by the time it's time to leave Hogwarts in book 4.

Exactly on the dot with the first one. ;D

I was going to say the same thing about the whole lots-of-people-there thing....I mean, Snape's been cleared of being a Death Eater, I'm sure he told Dumbledore the mark was getting stronger, it wouldn't be a good idea to freak out tons of students, Dumbledore was busy and all...

Plus, I've always thought that the Dark Mark has to have some sort of "security" on it. I mean, the Aurors never knew about the Dark Mark, right, otherwise they wouldn't have thought Sirius was a Death Eater once they caught him. They would've just checked his arm and known he wasn't working for Voldemort. And the first (only?) time Harry saw the Dark Mark was when Voldemort was present...So maybe the Dark Mark is only visible to Voldemort and Death Eaters. Which means Snape couldn't have shown Dumbledore the mark anyway.

If the dark mark were only visible to other Death eaters then why did Draco freak out when Madame Malkin was trying to push up his sleeve in HBP? then there's all the Dark marks we see in DH as well. I don't think that's the case with the dark marks. As far as Sirius goes, the ministry's been known to lock up innocents at random anyway and accuse them of loads of stuff.

I doubt the Marks are only visible to certain people. Sirius' case could be explained this way:
Sirius Black, by eyewitness accounts, seemingly murdered thirteen people (including one of his best friends) with a single curse. By Dumbledore's own testimony, he betrayed his two best friends to Voldemort. This is enough to convince anyone of his involvement with the Dark Lord.
Now, it seems that only the inner circle is awarded the Mark. Besides that, there's the idea that the Mark faded or vanished at Voldemort's 'death'. Either way, Sirius could have easily been considered a follower of Voldemort even without visible proof of the Dark Mark. I imagine that the ministry assumed the Potters to have been Sirius' "induction task", which he had to complete before he could take the Mark.

I never could think off answers to those but other people seemed to answer them well.

I always thought Snape was telling Dumbledor that he was comming back, that's why he knew somewhat. but for number 2, I kinda did wonder why also but I found out like 1 week later =P

We never had proof that Draco had the Dark Mark. I still think it's unlikely he did. Just because you're doing Voldemort's work doesn't mean you have the mark.

No we never had proof that he had it but he DID freak out when she touched his arm. But yes the Dark mark is only given to the inner members of Voldemort's circle, it's why Grayback doesn't have one among other people.

Those are very good questions. You should email them to JK Rowling by her website.
