Ok so i'm really really really sorry about having to provide a dev art link but it's against Jaeden's rules to post dolls on this base at a forum, however I spoke with her and asked her about uploading to dev and then providing a link on the forum to the devitation to get critiques and she said use my best judgement. So again i'm really sorry but I really need SERIOUS critique on this doll as i'm seriously trying to improve my realistic dolling work before I attempt some realistic base works.
Please please don't hate me for providing a link.
Also if you dislike pixel art then please don't tell me. I don't really care if you like pixel art or not, what matters here isn't wether you like the type of art it is or not but the completed piece of art. Thank you.

This took three days in mspaint with my tablet
base is by autumnpixels.com

Critiques are welcomed.

Theme: overdone to the extreem!

Quality: It seems this is pixel art... or scanned, inked, or somthinged very oddly.

Colors: I like the colors you choose, and the shading and lighting is all good :]

Overall: I would say this picture falls under the catagorie of "good" but it's not outstanding. It's pretty plain, and after looking at it for three seconds, you know exactly whats going on, and there is no need to pay more attention.

Sorry to sound harsh, but what I am trying to say is "think outside of the box."

The fact that you used MS Paint to create that drawing is impressive enough as it is. 3nodding MS Paint = teh shiz.

Loving the emotions you captured on their faces, and I especially love the detail of the folds. Nice shading on that guy's arm to bring out his muscle structure. Also, the shading on the girl's hair to show how it's 'pressed down' by the male's hand.

While goth isn't much of a favourite theme of mine, you obviously know your work with pixel art. Good work! 3nodding

Thank you.

The theme wasn't really 'goth' when I originally went into this pixel doll. But yes I agree they are a bit dull now that i look at them. Mayhaps i'll give them an interesting background to spruce the piece up or something.

I'll try to do more 'outside of the box' pieces in the future

There's not much to it.

And shouldn't her middle be thinner if she's wearing a corset?

It just looks like something stock turned into pixels.

Only if the corset was a true corset. This one is really just a decorative one.

Frankly I don't appreciate the last comment :l
I didn't use a stock image. I pixeled this all from my mind besides the base which was created by Jaedan of Autumn Pixels.

Well, frankly- pixel art is cheeting. If you put a straw hat on a statue, it's not your creation. You put a straw hat on a statue. : /

Pixel art is more of a collaboration between two artists if anything. If it's cheating then so are the collaborations posted in the art arena and anywhere else for that matter. If all you did was color the piece, it's not your creation either.

I lined and colored/shaded the hair and clothing on both along with recoloring the bodies. So atleast 50% of this image is completely mine.

But he didn't say I was cheating. He said it looked like all I did was pixelate a stock image and I really don't appreciate that.

But you have your opinion and I have mine.

Also please understand that this is a touchy subject for ALL dollers. If bases weren't meant to be used people wouldn't provide them for others use.
It's very flattering to have another doller use one of your own bases and I myself am always happy to see other doller's work on one of my own bases.

Eh, well, first of all, i have nothing to say about the legitimacy of pixel art. To each his own.

My only stance on the piece is that, as a completed image, i can't say it draws me in at all. I would say that it is a nice example of your ability to use pixels as a medium. As a piece of art, in my opinion it doesn't even really seem complete.

Here i would suggest what you might have done. Not should have done...since i'm not that pretentious. I just want you to maybe glimpse my train of thought and perhaps get some ideas of your own.

A background instead of just a transparency or flat color- Since the subject is pretty much straightforward, adding a background might have added intrest to the piece by creating an invironment and giving the viewer a deeper look into the situation. Giving the audience more to contemplate that just the subject of the piece alone sort of allows them to engage with the art more deeply.

Going beyond the base- Instead of simply clothing the base, it might have been interesting if you could have gone a bit further with the transformation. Instead of following along with the train of though already presented: a romantic situation between two people, you might have tried to incorporate some of your own interpretation and thought process and taken the piece further. Perhaps you could have made the piece more about your contribution, and taken the focus away from the base somewhat. again, it could have been a background...maybe it could have been a more elaborate costume...it could be something else. It's up to you.

As we can see, Dollers and pixel artists have a harder time than some other artists when it comes to convincing people that their work is valid. But if you went the extra mile to do so, you might come out with something really significant.

um, food for thought. i guess.

I also want to add that even if you decided to stick with what you're doing now, i couldn't really fault you. It's still nice work. It's a very personal type of decision, deciding where you want to take your art.

Thank you Page. I'll deffinately think on that and keep it all in mind for future dolls.
