"Hurting her's not what I'm worried about." Leolin stated, feathers still rubbed the wrong way as he watched the pair. When Byron gave him a glare, the griffin clicked his beak at him.

All the more embaressed at the stand-off between Leolin and Byron Laura ducked her head to try and hide the growing blush on her face. "I appologize, Leolin's not normally this... testy." Voice kept low, Laura couldn't bring herself to speak with dignity in front of the Lord at the moment. Feeling obligated to answer his question, Laura lifted her head after a pause and tried to speak in a more confident tone of voice. If the table hadn't been glass Byron might not have noted she was nervously toyed with the hem of her sleeve. "He doesn't push back when he leans on people. But he does fall asleep on me sometimes."

“Then what are you worried about?” Lysander asked, sounding more than a little perplexed. As far as he was concerned, what humans did together was their own business. Sure, he would protect Byron and his family, but he wouldn’t interfere in their social order. While the golden gryphon wasn’t completely sure about this, he had an inkling that it was a good deal more complex than a gryphon social order and it wasn’t a place where any gryphon should tread.

“Although… I suppose the idea of Byron having chicks is frightening,” he added slowly, turning the idea over in his head and disliking every facet of it. Byron was barely older than a human chick himself! And Laura didn’t look very old either… a somewhat disquieting thought worked its way into Lysander’s brain and took root there, refusing to leave.

But, since the table was glass, Byron did indeed notice Laura’s little anxious habit. Not that he continued to stare, of course; that would be rude. Women hated it if you continually stared at their thighs or breasts. That had been one of the early lessons for young Byron and it had stuck fairly well. Always look at their eyes. It made you look like you were listening.

He smiled at her words. “That’s very cute.” The words were chosen deliberately to be rather unclear whether they referred to Laura herself or Leo’s antics. The flirting time was cut short, however, since Rem returned soon enough, looking slightly suspiciously at the pair as if to ensure that nothing had been going on.

Satisfied that Byron hadn’t upset Laura---yet---Rem straightened out his clean blue shirt and sat down at the table. He toyed for a moment with his glass, trying to think of something to say. Social situations were always so awkward… and just his luck to be the ‘awkward’ one in the family. His siblings and cousins always seemed to know what to say. Or usually, anyway. But, as the host, Rem felt it was his responsibility to strike up conversations.

“So… umm… the weather is very…” he trailed off, unsure of where he was actually going with that.

Byron patiently waited until he got tired of his cousin’s tortured attempts at conversation and made a valiant attempt to rescue him. “Yes, there is lots of weather around today, Rem. That’s one of the things about weather. It’s everywhere. Why, I bet there’ll even be weather tomorrow! And the next day too.”

"My partner doesn't need chicks either! How are we going to race if she's heavy with eggs?" Ears folding back against his head, Leolin's beak clicked once more as he continued to glare at the back of Byron's head. "Stupid males.... They don't normally do that!" Fuming to the point he wasn't able to think too clearly, Leolin sat and stewed while keeping an eye on Byron.

"Rem!" When the Lord returned, Laura felt a wave of relief wash over her. Glad he was back and a chance for normalcy returned, Laura began to look a little more at ease. "Sunny days like this are perfect for Leolin's training." Aha! The woman's face lit up, and she gave a small smile. "Since he'll be going to race next weekend, I should take him home so my brother can put him through his paces in the next few days. You and Byron should have plenty time to catch up without a third wheel..."

As far as human biology went, Leander was far from an expert. All he really knew was that male human had dangly bits in one place and females had them in another. Most of them, anyway. Still, he was pretty sure that humans didn’t have eggs. But, they did tend to get fat…

“Wait, is he stupid because he is attempting to court her or are most of the others stupid because they don’t court her?” Poking holes in logic was one of Leander’s many habits. Speaking of logic… he blinked and clacked his beak in a curious way. “And she’s racing? I thought her brother was racing… it’s what the humans are saying.” Since he spent most of his time around humans rather than gryphons, Leander’s handle on the human language was excellent. That is, he understood about eight hundred words of it, including the word ‘brother’.

“That’s a perfect idea, Laura. Not that you are a third wheel or anything, but Leolin probably does need some practice… I doubt that playing with Tali is actually good exercise for him. And, NO, Byron, you can’t go along.” Despite having not seen Byron for a year or two, Rem still knew his cousin well enough to recognize the look on his face. It usually came right before a question like, ‘ohh, can I watch? I’ve never seen gryphon training before’. “Gryphon racers are very secretive about their training methods. Like horses. Very secret stuff… and you talk a lot, Byron.”

There. That sounded likely enough, right? Right?

Well, it sounded about right for Byron. He pouted and sat back in his chair, the very image of a spoiled bratling prince. “Fine… but, I want to go to the race next week. The journey has been a bit tiring anyway, I guess… should just settle in here.” Well, there would be plenty of time to flirt with Laura later. If he didn’t find anything more interesting to do, of course. Although, it was difficult to think of something more fun than flirting.

"Males almost always leave her alone..." Leolin said simply to the first comment, still looking grumpy. When Leander mentioned something that the humans had said however, he looked rather surprised. "What? Brother?" His glum expression softened a bit to one akin to surprise. "I didn't know you could understand them. No, her brother died years ago. My partner rides with me in the races."

Making a mental note to lock her door that night, Laura sighed calmly and began to nibble on her sandwich. When Rem had told her his cousin was coming to visit she'd assumed the man would be, well, a bit more like Rem was. The amorous advances the man made did little but make her nervous, and without much experiance dealing with men as such she was up the creek without a paddle when Rem left her alone with him. "I'll leave tomorrow. I hope you can stand a week without me, Rem?" She asked calmly, turning to look at the Lord.
