For those interested, I've edited and extended Garrett Hendlow's background story. It's probably more than twice as long, but I've broken it down into sections (individual posts) so that you can take it a step at a time.

Now with 120% more emo!

Seriously though, what is it with you two and your Emo histories?

I'm guessing today's crowd likes darker themes and stories. Look at today's games compared to the past's. How do we go from Mario, to Gears of War in about a decade?

EDIT: Then again, the original Super Mario was rather violent. I mean, you have a fat Italian guy extinguishing the life out of another living being via jumping on them. xd

I, for one, have been wanting to do something to this effect for quite some time. Besides, look how different the two men are? Jack is often having flashbacks, still quite enraged by the injustices of his past. Garrett has accepted them, occasionally reminisces, but otherwise leaves the memories when the belong: in the past.

And I'm an avid fan of exploiting, manipulating, and destroying human beings via their emotions. It's what makes us unique. And, ultimately, the only way to spin a truly riveting story is to make the best use of human personalities, faults, differences, dreams, and desires. Ours are on the gloomy and grim end of the spectrum, but that's also a large part of who our characters are. Compare them to Steven or Kai, and you see a big difference (although I wouldn't go as far to say they're polar opposites or anything). There are obvious reasons: Garrett lost everyone he knew (which was a small number) to the Drathonian attacks. And then, when he is finally part of a group larger than himself, it ends up betraying him and kills the woman he loves and lives for. So, what's a guy to do? Destroy that which wishes to destroy you. And in doing so he--ironically--brings about the true meaning for which the "group" attempted to represent. With everything you know destroyed twice in less than a year, how are you supposed to feel? How are you supposed to react?

The story with Jack is quite similar, and I quite enjoyed it. He also lost those he loved, but it was two-fold: he lost one because of a Drathonian, and he lost the second one because of his own actions. The consequences of his own actions are far greater than he anticipated.

Besides, how could it not be at least somewhat emotionally scarring? Millions of people died, and naturally there's a high chance some casualties are going to be important to people still alive. My story was simply something new I've been wanting to try. Trust me, not all my stories are that way. Of course, I do quite enjoy the underlying theme that our own faulty decisions are what ruin us as human beings. It's evident everywhere you go, and something I like to display within my writing.

Points in case: Garrett and Lilly could have left the Anarchists, or they could have chosen not to be apart of the raid. They knew both options were dangerous and yet they stayed, for whatever their reasons may have been. Thus, these are the consequences, regardless of what light you put them in. It was a result of decisions made, whether or not they were actively aware of making them (as often we are not consciously aware of all decisions we are making).
--Second point: my story of the Goddess of Fire in Alvirad. She chose not to look ahead or worry about the future; in living in the moment, she endured the consequences: the duration of her suffering was far greater than the duration of her bliss.

Emo-moments aside, what's your honest opinion? Where is it strong and where is it weak?
--------
Also, we're waiting on you to get the plot rolling. We aren't in control of when that thing takes off. Just have it leave; people who aren't on, but were supposed to be can include that in future posts. No biggy. Also, Green Squadron needs something to do, or at least notice that they'll be doing something soon.

Very good point there Blackbird. As you said, if you compare Garret's and Jack's stories, both of which are filled with traumatic events, to, for example, Steven's history (the worst part of which only had to do with a piss-balloon and smashing his head on the sidewalk) you are going to see large differences in that individual plot line. I.e. Steven's personal story is all about him trying to capture something that he never knew; he is trying to get closer to the parents he never got to meet. Nothing really life changing has ever happened to Steven and that fact shows up in many things ranging from his mentality to how he conducts himself.

And yes, we should discuss the matter concerning getting Green Squadron sound proverbial ground to stand on.

haha, I was just making a Joke about the Emo, and I know I made a setting where Emo would probably be very common, but that is a nice explanation you wrote up. Sorry if I insulted you or anything.

IN Other news, My next post will move us along!

Not at all; I love delving into literary criticisms of characters in the like. I was genuinely curious about your opinion.

Well, I'll be trying to look for somewhere to post sometime, but this was a pretty good week for me to not have much to do. I have been down at the family blacksmithing shop since Monday; customized my machete biggrin . Also, Smiles has been working down at the State Park all week and other such things. Mostly I'm just enjoying reading the posts and getting a feel for the world.

Cadet: Unless I missed something, no one carries comm units; only data pads. A comm unit would be found as a peripheral upon a Marine's helmet or within the ship of a fighter pilot, but not on their person.

Not again....I'll go fix that.

EDIT: Fixed, sorta. I ended up adding to it too. sweatdrop

I'm pondering writing a Novel based on Battle Hymn of the Republic. Would you guys mind If I used your characters, mostly just the older more prevalent characters, Ie; Jack, Steven, Garret, and the like.

If I actually do anything with it perhaps I'll share XD

I would be honored if Steven took part the novel.

By all means, run with it as you will. Seeing these characters from your perspective would be a truly rewarding experience as well.
