Maximos passed the time tossing Ankokuko hand to hand, flipping it a few times before catching it again. He was getting used to its feel, its weight. But at the same time he took in the scenery, learning to wield the Caller's mass as a second thought.
Infact, as almost never happened Maximos wasnt really thinking at all. He was just enjoying. Thats what vacation was for after all. It was probably because of that, that Ryugi's question hit him square upside the head.
So, Max, you told me you came from a little island village. But, where did you learn to fight? Surely someone had to teach you. Or did life teach you to fight with more skill?
That was far more loaded a question than it seemed. For a second, Maximos actually stopped, his stride broken just for a step before he resumed it. That question had weight, and he bore it, but as he caught up he didnt seem offended, just...in thought.
Thats...thats quite a heavy history there.
Max said, bringing his hand up to rub his chin, as the other supported his elbow and Ankokuko.
I would say its a bit of both to be honest.
His hands lowered, the sword shifting back to his right shoulder, leaving his left to gesture.
When I was old enough to stand, my father taught me to punch. Brutal stuff by todays standards. He spared nothing, there were alot of bruises, alot of missing teeth, and my mother to heal it all away come evening.
He tossed a punch or two at the air in gesture.
Then, when I was old enough to hold a blade, I was taught to use...several. Short swords, long swords, daggers, knives, shields, some of the smaller spears and such...you know.
Max counted the weapons on his finger actually raising more fingers than he listed off, but he left those weapons out. Maybe there skills had fallen into disrepair, or were just disregarded in general.
I...really hurt alot those days...Father was brutal.
He took a deep breath and spoke in a gruffer voice, trying to mimic a "father".
"Might is everything. We are the fist and sword of Aria....I didnt raise a cry baby. Blood is weakness leaving the body. So what if you die, would you rather live a weakling?"
You could tell from the spacing that wasnt one speech, but several phrases just said together. And summarized as Max said.
Brutal.
But he was still smiling.
That was most of my childhood. I think I learned even more in Vergan.
His eyes were on the road, and he realized Ryugi might not know that name, so he turned to face him and explain.
Vergan was a forest once, until the "Dark Lord" cursed it, transforming it into a desert. It was believed uninhabitable, but towards the end of the darker period of my life I found myself there. Fighting against sand worms, that plagued the land. I found elder, more skilled combatants than my father, I read countless books in the Great Library below...I must have spent a good ten years there, feeding my mind and body. But!
And index finger raised.
Soon news of the Dark Lord reached the desert. I set off to pay the world back the debt the Destroyer incurred. I would find, and fight, this Dark Lord that ravaged and tortured Aria and I would be a "hero".
He chuckled making air quotes.
I even had my own group of adventures gathered up along my travels. Day in and day out saw combat, and combat, and more combat. Monsters great and small, places old and new. Danger. Peril.
There was a sigh, he shook his head.
We spent years following the Dark Lord. We could probably defend a small village in our sleep. And finally we reached an end to our quest. We beat him! And in thanks for our efforts a whole was ripped open in space and time as a final effort, and we were sent into void. The space between dimensions. I wound up here, on Gaia.
He tapped his chin.
I'd say the rest of my training came from my time in the Leviathan Stadium. I've always had a love for the sword, even as a kid, I suppose I tried to develop that most. But I'd never have learned a thing if not for my father, still my fathers training would lead me mediocre at best, if not for my life. So....both.
He would say with a smile, and a nod. And a sort of curious look at Ryugi to see if that was too much, or not enough. But one could bet that if Ryugi yawned even once Max would likely just chuckle and shut up, saying something like. "Its boring really, I just fought more than any sane person should have." and leave it at that.

And then that grin... ...Vermin. Begone...As Death Knight would jump up to attempt to impale Ryudo, it was a simple matter for the Shadow Dragon to move himself to the side of the thrusting weapon, and then swing his blade into position. It was as simple as swinging a piece of cardboard or balsa wood into an attacking position. The Death Knight had given Ryudo the perfect opening he'd been waiting for. The true power of his abilities was about to be revealed... As the Death Knight sped towards Ryudo, his attack having been avoided by Ryudo floating himself to the side by use of his psychic abilities, he would finally get a close up look at what exactly Ryudo's blade looked like. The blade was nearly four feet long, and looked like a katana, except one could see through it. It was covered in energy, and looked almost like a black cloud. But when the blade turned to face the Knight with its edge, the blade would vanish from view. The reason behind this would soon become terribly clear. With a dash of speed, Ryudo would speed down past the side of the Death Knight, the transparent blade suddenly turning a solid black before vanishing completely as the edge came head on past the right arm, shoulder, and half of his side was suddenly flayed apart from the rest of his body, before a resounding burst of shadow energy would erupt from a long thin line of black that trailed from the blade as it sped along the form of the Death Knight. Energy, armor, flesh, bone, nothing the Death Knight had in his arsenal would stop this blade. His overconfidence would cause him to lose nearly one quarter of his body in a single attack. A hot knife through butter would not even come close to the ease at which this weapon separated the limb, shoulder, and part of his side from his corrupted body. Then, the energy from the black line would erupt, exploding outward into the now nearly mortally wounded Death Knight. What effect the energy slamming into his corrupted body would have on his unprotected insides was a complete mystery, but it wasn't going to be pretty... Ryudo would speed down to the ground below, and skid around, watching the swath of energy erupt from his close range attack. But HOW THE s**t TACO COULD THIS ******** HAPPEN!? The process was simple... Ryudo had created a new style of combat which played on his weaknesses, and made them his strengths. He'd created a close range style for himself, using a weapon made purely out of psionic energy and shadow element... The style Ryudo was using only looked simple, when if fact, it was the single most difficult task he had ever done. Using a massive amount of power to take energy, combine it with his mental prowess, and compress that psionic energy and shadow energy into a blade sharp enough, and small enough, to cut small rifts between the material and shadow planes. In short, Ryudo had created a two-dimensional blade. The big attack was the epitome of it. A massive gash between the shadow and prime material planes that unleashed the wrath of the entire Shadow Plane for a short period of time. But most of the attacks were created through tiny rifts on the measure of a millimeter or so wide, and only a foot or two long. They allowed him to unleash powerful abilities without overly tiring himself. Though, this state of combat was VERY draining on him. He wouldn't be able to fight off Death Knight using this mode of combat for long. But after the blow he would have just struck him, it was unlikely that he would need to continue the fight much longer. By the time the miasma would have been released from the Death Knight, Ryudo would already be on the ground, and ready to attack whatever else came to oppose him and his homeland...

Ryugi listened intently to Max's story as he spoke. He never knew that his friend had been part of such a large story of his own before winding up on Gaia. Each tidbit of information gave him new insight into the man he called his "most trusted friend." When Maximos finished speaking, Ryugi whistled.
Wow, Max... I never knew you had such an extensive history.
Ryugi was genuinely surprised by what he'd heard. And it was an interesting, and yet at the same time, saddening tale. He couldn't help but wonder what Maximos had been like back then. What "Heroic Maximos" had been like, and how much of him was still inside his shadowy friend.

CRITICAL HIT!
As Ryudo veered to the side, the Death Knight tried to shake him off by creating an expanding field of lunar energy around him. However, much to his surprise, his attempts completely failed. The shadow dragon passed through without the slightest bit of resistance, and the hail of energy bombarded him shortly there after.
The Shadow Plate literally shattered like glass before dissipating into nothingness. The Death Knight landed in a kneel, supported by his left arm, deeply confused as to what had just transpired. After all, the incredible sharpness of the dimensional blade would sever his nerves cleanly before he ever felt the pain.
"What the...?"
~THUD.
It wasn't until his severed arm and Ruination landed nearby that Argon truly realized what had happened. The dimensional blade, with its ability to rend through the fabric of reality, tore right through the Death Knight's barrier without so much as the slightest resistance. The bombardment of energy completely finished off what was left of his armor; it would now take several hours for the shade-skin to recuperate as opposed to a few short minutes.
"Ho... how DARE you!?!"
The previously disambiguated voice of the Death Knight was now quite clear... as were his physical features. Argon's long, unnaturally black hair flowed through the air like water. His skin: completely fresh. Deep purple eyes glared with intense fury at his assailant. He certainly didn't look like the rampaging monster Ryudo probably imagined him to be...
You could even say he was quite beautiful.
Sparks of purple energy shot around his left hand wildly. Chaos energy was unmasterable and fickle in the best of times; with that loss of concentration and the power Ruination granted him, Argon could no longer manipulate it effectively. Nor could he discharge the stored energy from his arm without further injuring his body.
Moonblade had effectively cornered himself.
It was ironic, really, that a Death Knight was bested in close combat by one such as Ryudo with a single blow. It was a wake-up call of sorts, to the real threats he'd face on Angara. His power, though ever increasing, wouldn't be enough. He'd truly have to rely on his skills... something he hasn't really had to do.
Now wasn't the time for a lesson in humility, however. He had to get his s**t together before the Shadow Dragon ripped him apart. It was a good thing his dark partner was still around to assist him; the Tainted Dragon retaliated immediately by firing a thick, destructive beam of energy directly at Ryudo. The hundred and forty foot beam was hot enough to completely incinerate the Shadow dragon, where he foolish enough to try and endure its effects.
About this time, LEGION would be breaking through the storm.

Maximos sort of nervously scratched the back of his head and gave Ryugi a shy embarrassed sort of smile. He used to have quite the bad habit of running off at the mouth profusely. Heroic Monologuing was what they used to call it. His team said it was bound to get them in trouble.
More recently Maximos tried to keep his spouts to a few words, or just the right quote so to say so much for him was....nostalgic, and yet...embarrassing.
Too much?
He asked, sort of nervously.
I never know, I'm sorry.
Some old habits die hard. Some old habits just never die.

MagnusXL Now wasn't the time for a lesson in humility, however. The energy surge from the dragon was much easier for Ryudo to read than those of any other creature, because it was a draconic energy signature. Ryudo wasn't finished yet. He could still do it. He could still fight, and he wasn't going to give up until he either grasped victory, or was forced to retreat at the risk of his own death. This plague that threatened his homeland would be stopped, or he would give everything he had to halt its progress. This dark force he'd felt for months had finally begun to show itself. His psychic perception of the elements was so in tune with the world around him, that he could feel the very core of Gaian energy being shifted. Things that should not be changing were shifting, and the balance of the world was changing with them. This dark force that he felt pulling and pushing on Gaia's energies had troubled him greatly, like a dark cloud on the horizon signifying dangers to come. He would give his all to prevent that cloud from coming to its realization, whatever it was. As the Tainted Dragon made its way around to launch the attack at Ryudo, he pointed his blade towards the incoming energy blast and let out a battle cry! - GRRRAAH!!! - The energy around his form suddenly pulsed with power and the blade in front of him would erupt into a massive torrent of energy, heading straight for the incinerating beam. The ground around him would be blasted out into a crater from the force of the energy unleashed, as Ryudo disbanded the Two Dimensional Blade, and sent the full force of its energy erupting down the length of the beam, tearing away the energy from the mount like it was nothing. All that energy had been compressed to form the shape of the blade, and to make it small enough to do its job, but now, it was all unleashed in one massive blast. To continue to use and hold that much energy at once would exhaust Ryudo to the point where he'd be unable to continue combat. The energy now released, Ryudo would have to rely on his more conventional tactics to fight off the growing horde as they broke through the storm clouds and made their way towards the shore. Ryudo breathed heavily as he protected himself from the blast, and then looked towards the injured Death Knight. And then, he began to walk towards him, his senses on high alert. If he chopped the head off of the snake, the body that followed it would surely die...

Maximos Too much?He asked, sort of nervously. I never know, I'm sorry. Oh no no no! Don't be sorry! I enjoyed every word of it. A history so expansive should be told in its entirety.Ryugi grinned and kept on walking. He would have felt cheated had Maximos not told him the entire story. One must understand the whole experience before they can truly understand the individual.

O-oh, alright then.
His hand lowered and a bit of the embarrassment faded from his face. He looked a little more pale and a little less red. He seemed content to smile brightly, because someone actually enjoyed his abridged although yet clearly long tale.
That contentment would last. And Maximos would return...
And you Ryugi? Was it a loved one or life that gave you the impressive skills you have today?
On good tale deserves another! Maximos knew a bit of Ryugi's history, but he'd never learned just that.

Maximos And you Ryugi? Was it a loved one or life that gave you the impressive skills you have today? On good tale deserves another! Maximos knew a bit of Ryugi's history, but he'd never learned just that. I think it was a little of both...Ryugi huffed a bit and a grin appeared on his face. It wasn't a pleased grin, it was a grin that came from knowledge, and past remembering. Just as with all Angaran Dragons, Ryugi had not been born knowing how to control and use his elemental abilities, or how to fight with weapons. When I was young, by dragon standards anyway, I was sent to the fighting school in Presea. Master Hamma's fighting academy wasn't really some big fancy place. It was more of a house with a large open yard out back with enough space for us to learn to fight. All the kids went to train there when they were young and learn how to fight with swords, and all manner of weapons. I never mastered anything, but I became quite skilled with a sword and lance. Ryugi took a deep breath and kept walking, enjoying the crisp air. It was somewhat difficult to remember that simple time in his life, even if he'd come to terms with the early happenings. Events like the ones that took place back then weren't something one could easily remove from their mind. After training for many years, we finally reached our Time of Awakening. Its sort of like puberty for humans, except we reach it at what appears to be a younger age. Its the time when our powers truly awaken for the first time, and we begin to study control and how to use them. We all came to control our powers, all save one.Ryugi spied a rock near the trail and motioned toward it. One he came upon it, he sat on top of it and made himself comfortable. Apparently it was time to take a break from the trek. After all, one of the worst things one could do when it was freezing outside was to sweat. Even dragons shielded against the cold could get effected by it if they were exposed for too long. Ryudo was different. He was a Shadow Dragon. A type of dragon that is an offshoot of a black dragon. Those types of offshoots only gain a single element, but it is terribly strong. Ryudo was an oddity even among his type. His powers were exceptionally strong. He was gifted, or so everyone told him. He fought hard to control them, but ultimately, they took control of his mind, and drove him to destroy the village. After that incident, he left, as did I. If none of that had ever happened, its likely I never would have left Angara, and never would have become as skilled as I am now.Ryugi laid back against the rocky outcropping and sighed, continuing his story. After I left Angara, I was captivated by stories of a Golden Dragon going against the natural way of things, and saving people and towns from monsters. Of course, these were all stories and legends by the time I got to hear them. And, after searching on my own, I finally learned that Eclipse had left Angara and come to the mainland after the battle of Dragon Guard. I was determined to find him. This time, Ryugi really did grin. Maximos would be able to tell that he was fond of these memories. I gathered a group of adventurers and set off on a quest to find Eclipse. Soon after I learned he'd been killed, but that his sword had been taken and hidden away somewhere, and thats when the quest shifted to finding Ragnarok, the Sword of Eclipse. During this adventure, I fought in many battles alongside my friends, and my skills grew from basic fight training, to those of a skilled warrior. My friends and comrades are long since dead since then, but until they died, I kept in contact with them. Some of them settled down and had families. Some...were killed in the journey itself.
After swearing to use Ragnarok to protect the people I loved most in the world, and to stand against those that would harm the innocent people of the world, I set off on another journey. This time, my travels took me to Barthavos where I became a mercenary. I was an odd one, thats for sure, as I only took jobs where good would come from it, or people were desperately in need. But I made some treasured friends along the way as well. Some of them died in combat beside me, and once more I had to face the fact that I still was not strong enough.Ryugi sat back up and looked down at the ground as he spoke for a bit, continuing. Their deaths drove me to become more skilled so that no one would have to suffer as I did when I wasn't strong enough to protect them. That was my driving force for most of my life, and still is...He then looked up to Maximos, his treasured friend, and smiled, almost offering him a piece of advice. ...Having something to protect... Something to fight for... Something that lets you know you're doing real good in the world for someone, even if they won't know its you, or know that you've made the world a better place just by a small action...
That is what drives me to continue to fight and get stronger. As long as there is innocence and good in the world, I will have something to carry me up and over the pain in my life, and to strive ahead, no matter what...And then, silence. It was almost as if fate itself intended those words to sink into the moment, and to make it last longer than it normally would have. The cool wind blew, snow softly fell, and clouds lazily drifted across the sky. And then, Ryugi would speak again. Well, let's keep moving. It'd be a shame to freeze to death up here just because we took a break. He'd chuckle, and continue to make his way down the path, after waiting for Maximos, of course.

Max listened.
It was arguably the only thing he was better at than sword fighting. He didnt just hear Ryugi while waiting to speak, he was honestly and earnestly interested. His eyes were focused, only occasionally breaking contact to look ahead and make sure he didnt walk into a ditch, or into a tree, or off a cliff.
When the dragon stopped for a rest, the shadow followed. Ryugi sat on the rock, while Maximos leaned the nearest sit-able object and listened, making sure he had at least some measure of eye contact to show he was in tune. He even went so far as to lay Ankokuko across his lap, pulling his attention away from it.
Questions arose in his mind, Several, but it would have been rude to cut him off, so he would wait until it was all said and done. He'd make note of the more sensitive reactions so as to avoid questions that fell there.
Like Ryudo. Though now he understood the source of the weight the Shadow Dragon bore. Still, he understood in silence, as it very closely matched his own.
A realization came to Max, something about what Ryugi was saying. It was something he would bring up once the Dragon was done, and as Ryugi finished he said...
Thats an odd feeling.
He smirked.
Hearing you talk about your life, it almost sounds as long as my own.
Max shook his head looking down at the ground for a second and then back up.
But its not at all. You've got two millenia under your belt. The stories you could probably tell....its really astounding. I can only imagine the sort of things you must have seen.
He could see zeal in his companions eyes. Fire in his voice, the strength. For a moment he could almost imagined himself on that rock, young, naive, telling a party of misfits why he did what he did.
It was like a ghost or a shadow long past and distant.
Something to protect huh?
He let that thought weigh out for a bit. It was distant but familiar. Had Max really lost sight of why he fought and trained?
Well, let's keep moving. It'd be a shame to freeze to death up here just because we took a break.
A chuckle.
Indeed.
And he followed suit, it wasnt until they were walking that he decided to pose his questions.
I've got to ask.
Breaking the silence.
How's that feel? Tapping into your powers the way you do, feeling magic all around you. Whats that like?

Maximos I've got to ask.Breaking the silence. How's that feel? Tapping into your powers the way you do, feeling magic all around you. Whats that like? Ryugi grinned, but continued to walk, trying to get himself a little warmer again. The last thing he wanted to do was spend a chilly night up here in the pass. Really, its hard to explain...Ryugi was silent for a moment, as if lost in thought, trying to consider the vast amount of sensations and perceptions that he felt each time he used the power of his bond with the planes. Its almost like tapping into a thought. A memory. You think about it, you feel for it, and then, its there, and the happy sensations, or whatever emotion that was present from that event flows through you like a wave, and you feel it at your core.Ryugi would remember each time he'd reached out to the planes and they'd granted him the power to mold and wield as his own, and the rush of energy and sensation that always followed, as if it was truly becoming one with his body and mind. Its very similar to that, except, that powerful feeling flows through you, and you can shape it. You can intensify it, you can weaken it. You can shape that feeling into whatever you want, and make it do something incredible. Its like a rush each time as your body deals with the raw energy of the plane, and then allows you to become charged by it. Its an amazing experience, no matter how many times one goes through it.Ryugi paused for a moment, thinking once more, and then quickly added to his explanation. But, different dragons tell of their experiences in different ways depending on the element, but usually, its very similar to that experience. My sensations are warm, powerful, and light. Others can be smooth and flowing like water, hard and solid like earth, or even wispy and secretive like shadow. It all depends on the sensation of each element.

I'm...I'm speechless.
Maximos tried to imagine in. He tried to capture the feeling as Ryugi explained it, as best he could. It was so different from what he was used to, so much more...natural, as opposed to leaned or studied, or imbued or cursed.
I wish I knew how that felt.
Amongst his people Maximos was a natural when it came to manipulating shadows, but that was only because he was one of the youngest villagers. His mind was fresh, and open to new possibilities not set in old instincts. He adapted quickly.
This...this was more, and yet at some level the same. This was like an entirely different school of magic. And Ankokuko, so firmly in his hand was a key to a doorway of a new understanding of a new magic.
He couldnt see himself ever being as adept at it as say Ryugi. Or even as adept as he was at his own brand of ability. But still, the potential seemed present but a step away...maybe Ankokuko was a key. Maybe he was daydreaming.
He turned his head back to the road, and asked.
Do you think its something someone without dragon in them could learn?

Maximos Do you think its something someone without dragon in them could learn? Most certainly.Ryugi would answer his friend quite simply. There were many ways that one could attain such abilities. Some were more difficult than others, but as the elemental planes were a part of the world around them, and present in all living things to a small degree, it was possible for anyone to learn if they put enough time, energy, and effort into it. It would take time, but if anyone could do it, Ryugi knew that Maximos, with his seemingly endless gift of patience, creativity, and ingenuity, would and could. The elements are present in all things in small amounts. Spell casting taps into them indirectly and uses a magical force to refine the energy for a spell. Anger, passion, sorrow, stubbornness, love, fear, all of these emotions can be traced back to certain types of elemental forces at work within each being.
While there are physical causes for these as well, the elements represent a large part of all life. And as all elements are already present in living beings, all it takes is time, effort, and practice to learn how to tap into them. While it isn't an easy process, it can be, and has been, done.Ryugi knew that many people that were not an elemental could tap into the elements. They just usually did not do it via a natural process. But, Maximos with his innate ability to manipulate shadows, was already one step closer to the heart of the process than he realized.

Those very first words gave him hope, he smiled like a child even. A new school of magic? A craft to study? Oh the prospects made his mind positively bristle, and his heart pound. He loved magic!
And then it sank, the edges of his smile faltered a bit, something like a child that waited all week to go to the park only to be told "No". He tried to keep his smile, but it showed because, as he reminded himself.
I cant cast spells...
The Arian magical circulatory allowed only for the output of magical energy, not the intake. While magical effects could be placed on an Arian, they could never breath deep and take in magic like some could. It just wasnt in there make up. Maximos was special, his arm could take in life and magic and so forth, but it shared only the smallest portion with him, and what good would it be if his cursed arm went perusing in different planes without him?
No good.
The disappointment only lasted a flicker though, as mention of emotional components made the Shadow wonder if there wasnt a way around his handicap! Maybe more emotion? Maybe Ankokuko to breach the doorway? Maybe....something?
I hope theres a way...
He found himself absently saying, with a bit more defunk than he should have. Only to try and perk himself back up.
I bet the Monks are old and patient, and skilled enough to teach anyone!
Monks. And dragon monks at that. It wasnt a foriegn concept, a dragon with its longer life span could probably far out reach a mortal human with so much more time to meditate. But Monks were people of custom and tradition, and easily offended. And dragons, well, Maximos didnt know them too well, though the few he'd met on the journey so far were nice! So he felt the need to ask.
Is there anything I should know? Traditions perhaps? Customs? Things that could get me eaten?
