Maia was grinning. She hurried towards the ropes indicating the end of the pool area. She didn't think Toby would be able to stay under water very long; Which meant she'd probably see him in a moment or two. She paused a moment to take a breath.

Toby popped up to breathe perhaps a bit later than one might expect, and also further back. He was far behind, but that was likely due in part to the fact that as he dove back under it was clear had one arm up and immobile, acting as a wobbly flesh-colored shark fin cresting through the water

Maia decided to let Toby catch up, after seeing the lengths he was going to to be a shark. She laughed, watching as He dove again. It must have been hard for him to swim in that position, poor guy.

It was rather difficult, but when he knew he was close enough, Toby dove to the bottom of the lake and jettisoned off the floor to burst through the surface, lunging at Maia with his arms out.
"RAAH!"
Sharks didn't really make a sound, but he felt like he needed one.

When Toby popped out of the water, Maia gave a laugh and hugged him. "You're the only shark I've ever liked," she informed him. "You go, I'll be the shark now." She ballooned out her cheeks in order to hold her breath and dove under water.

Toby was caught. That wasn't nearly the tackle he had expected. He just laughed as he fell into Maia's arms and then countered her offer with a brief: "but I'm not even a blonde babe!"
Except he totally was blonde, wasn't he. Wups!
Before he could correct himself Maia was after him and he swam with force a while and then just rolled over and began a backstroke.

Maia surfaced quickly and took another breath, heading for Toby. Instead of surfacing when she reached him, she grabbed a hold of his foot and tugged at it a moment. "Got you!" She announced, surfacing and smiling at him.

Toby let out an inhuman wail of terror, raising his arms and unbalancing his flotation. "DEAR GOD, SOMETHING'S GOT ME!" He had developed a bit of a southern accent as well and then immediately burst into a fit of laughter, mostly out of embarrassment, and sank.

Not knowing if Toby was faking the fear or not didn't matter to Maia; she had burst into giggles at his antics. She wrapped her arms around him. "You're an even better shark attack victim," She said, trying to stifle her giggles.

His bare chest, the swells of her body. Oh boy. Nope. Nopenope. He gave Maia a hug and thought friendly, platonic thoughts. She was new. She wasn't trying to lead him on. This was just how Maia was. She hugged, she held, it was fine. At least she wasn't doing it to strangers.
"I don't know if I should thank you for that."

"Don't worry," Maia assured him. "I wouldn't let a real shark get you. Dari would cry, and I'd miss you." An awful lot, she was beginning to realize. "Want to go see if Dari's ready to go boating?"

"Well, Dari can't cry, so I'm not sure what he'd do. He might have a party," Toby teased. Of course Dari could be sad, that went without question, but he wasn't trying to make anyone sad here. He then turned back toward the shore where Dari still lay reading and nodded. "Sure. I bet he'd like that. Come on."
Toby wriggled away from Maia and began to swim toward the shore, and then walk when it became feasible. Dari sat up to greet them although he didn't appear to have looked down from his book, which he promptly dog-eared and set aside all at the same time.
"Hey. Are you ready to head out on the boat?"
"Sure," Dari replied and stood. A patch of sand stuck to his arm but he could do nothing about it without risking wiping off paint.

"He wouldn't party," Maia protested immediately, and then realized Toby was teasing. She followed him up onto the shore. It was hard, walking after swimming so long. Bleh. Was this what mermaids felt like when coming onto land? Her legs felt like jelly.
She didn't run up and give Dari a hug like she might have done, had they been in a safe enviroment. She didn't want to risk messing the paint off and having Dari discovered. "Toby says we can come at night, next time."

"Oh, did he?" Dari asked, turning to Toby.
"She has this weird thing about including you, I don't know."
Dari smiled closed-lipped and shook his head. "Some might find that charming. Help me pack up?" The assumption was that they would be taking everything with them to the boat or, at the very least, packing them away in the car so nobody would be tempted to run off with anything. Toby started rolling up the towel while Dari rescued his books from the roll.
