At the threat of actually being beaten, Toby gave up on Maia's ego and sped up. Were he able to jump out of the water and tackle her here he may well have but there was no place to set his feet. Instead he just grinned and forged on.

Maia was disappointed, but continued after him. When she reached the bouy she took a moment to catch her breath. "Swim back to shore?" She suggested, pointing. "Maybe we can splash Dari from there."

When they reached the buoy, Maia was only a split second behind her comrade. To suddenly pick up and lose by a landslide was in poor form. He turned to shore after a moment then, holding on to the rope, and eyed Dari. The alien was a bit of a ways up the beach and seemed to have given up watching them if he ever had been, instead taking part in a book. They might barely be able to splash him, but Toby couldn't be sure.
"We can try," he said with a nod and then swam out, back toward shore. He wasn't racing now; he was just taking his time.

The selkie followed Toby back to shore. She went as close to Dari as was possible while still remaining in the water and sent a splash his way. It didn't seem to hit the alien, but Maia was enjoying the attempt. She glanced towards Toby. "You try."

A young couple on the beach turned to watch two fully-grown adults trying to splash a third on the shore. Dari didn't move when the attempted splashes failed although he could still see it happening through the bottoms of his eyes before the paint began.
Toby laced his hands together again at the thumbs and thwomped them forward on the water, but even that wasn't enough. Now Dari let the book down and arched a brow at Maia and Toby.
"We've been spotted," Toby said softly and abruptly dove back into the water and emerged behind Maia.

Maia flashed Dari a bright grin. "Don't worry. We're safe in here," She assured him, turning her head slightly in attempt to catch sight of him. "If he were just a bit closer... Oh, I know!" She cupped her hands and straightened, but the water quickly escaped. She frowned and tried again.
"Well. That won't work."

Toby laughed slightly at the failed attempt at cupping water. Really it was probably for the best. Dari's body paint was supposedly water-proof but could wear in odd places. Rather than teach Maia the proper way to hold water in your hands or how to steal a child's beach toys, he gave a sudden "RAH" and tackled her, falling back into the water with her in his arms.
He could feel the pressure of her body against him, even the warm and wet of the open portion of her swimsuit. He didn't really want to let go, but he also didn't want Maia to be frightened. Besides, such thoughts were inappropriate and should be well-avoided.

Maia was caught off guard by Toby's sudden attack, but let herself be pulled back into the water. She squirmed against him, and when they emerged she was grinning. "Are you trying to be a shark?" she asked. "Because they're more like this. Rawr!" she turned around and wrapped her arms around him. "See, now you're dead."

Oh, but Maia was welcoming herself back into his arms. His heart skipped a beat and he threw his arms back around her. At her assurance of is death, he leaned forward and bit the side of her neck in three gentle chomps.
"Arara--" Ah, she felt so nice in his arms and at his mouth. What a shame.

Was the selkie blushing? Yes. She gave a giggle. Yes, she supposed that was more like a shark. A small one. She pulled away slightly and gave him a smile. "Very convincing shark," she said. She hugged him again. "I still think a big shark would be more like this," she said, giving him a squeeze.

He imagined it for just a moment; turning his platonic little bites into gentler kisses, trailing them up Maia's neck--
Yeah. It had been a while. He shook the thought out of his head and then accepted this great big hug or sorts, laughing. "You sure you don't mean snakes?" He held her tightly and leaned from side to side, oddly like a preschool version of the first scene in Jaws.

"I've never met a snake," Maia considered. "Aren't they like land eels?" She made a face. She still didn't like eels. She didn't especially want to leave Toby's arms--or the water, for that matter. She leaned against him. "I bet I could beat a shark to the end of the lake. At least in my other form."

"More or less," Toby replied with a chuckle. Maia and her eels. He decided not to elaborate on what behavior he was actually mimicking. Talking about being crushed to death could really put a damper on the day's festivities.
It was a little odd to feel Maia leaning into him. He could feel the heat in his cheeks and ears as he flushed. Well then. This was sort of odd. The closeness of a beautiful woman was good, especially when you'd been wanting her there t begin with. On the other hand, he and Maia were just friends. Towing her around the lake was one thing, but all-out embracing in the water sort of crossed a line.
"Well, I don't know any were-sharks to test it out," he said, willing himself to just let go. Terminate the hug, let it all be over. He wasn't really hurting anyone, right? Neither of them were. If Maia was comfortable with this, maybe he should be too.

"Me either," Maia said. She released her hold on Toby. "I wouldn't like to meet one, either. But you can pretend to be one." She raced ahead, turning to look at him. "Can't catch me!"

Toby laughed and shouted "you're probably right!" before diving under the water, holding his breath and trying his damndest to chase Maia down from the deep.
