I love the clarinet, i jus that people would make fun of the clarinet just because it might sweek every once in a million years. Another thing that gets me is that when your in concert band that the writers don't really give you any part to stand out in....

Mai_2010 Another thing that gets me is that when your in concert band that the writers don't really give you any part to stand out in.... Man, I hate that too. Especially in marching band. On the field I would try to play good, but in the stands, we're all hyper, and no one notices if we screw up. (Back when I used a 3 reed, my clarinet used to go like a half octave higher than what I fingered, especially when I was in the upper register, using basically only the left hand, below the weird fingerings. I still wonder how it did that. But the problem has severely diminished since I switched to a 3 1/2 and now a 4. And now I'm using Rico Royals, and I still sound sortof bad, although better than I did, and the local music store doesn't carry Vandorens. gonk ) Hiceonie Ahaha you know whats the best about being in a band? when you're bored on a bus for many many many long hours under a hot spanish sun, we all have sing-a-longs. the best is when we sing our band songs and we each sing our own parts. its hilarious! ahaha! too fun! Do you guys do it too?!? yeah, I think, but I didn't go on my band trip this year. (I had tons of fun at the beach instead,) but on our trip with the two honors classes (classes for the really smart people, only about 50 out of a little over 300 in my grade) we went to the Johnstown flood museum and the gift shop had kazoos. About half the people on the trip are in the band, and three guys, who got kazoos, started playing their parts to the song Equinox that we did, and it was very entertaining, until the teachers got really sick of it. Oh yeah, during the time I wasn't on gaia, I went to Virginia Beach, a 7 hour drive from where I live. The campground we stayed at had 1000 campsites, canadians (which I thought was odd, because if it was a 7 hr drive for me, and I live in the middle of PA, It must be like a 15 hr drive for them), and people of many races speaking at least 4 different languages. (English, Spanish, French, Greek?, and maybe some German. Plus some of the southerners whose accents are so heavy that they might as well have been speeking another language.) And while there, I learned that air conditioning is as nessecary as oxygen down there, I hate the sand and how I look in a swimsuit, and I also learned that sunburn is nasty, and tends to appear in the most inconvinient places. (like the tops of my feet, for instance.) So what have all of you been doing? I now dub this post as the longest I have ever posted.

yargh I hate it when that happens...
I don't think it happens often in the pieces I get...
people who make fun of the clarinet suck, especially if they play another instrument--it shows no respect for the instrument and its shameful to call yourself a musician if you cannot atleast appreciate the tone color of it or something rofl uhhh

Miyoko Clarinetti flaming ninja-DX thats terrible!!!! D= I've never gotten sunburn..i don't know why o.0 lucky you. I had to give up the DDR 7th mix machine there for a night during a 4 night stay, and the last night it was out of order. I played the next day, but it felt like I soaked them in hot sauce. Not just any hot sauce. Frank's Red Hot Sauce. Burning legs aren't that fun either. Or arms, for that matter. For two of the days I was at the beach, I didn't wear a shirt over my swimsuit, to try and get rid of my farmer's tan. it didn't work. It made it worse by turning it into a fat white horizontal stripe on my upper arms. But it's pretty much gone now, I guess I heal fast or it looked worse than it was or something. But how could you not get burnt living in california? Are you natrually tan?

Miyoko Clarinetti gonk ooh i suck at DDR AHHHH HOT SAUCE DX.... i'm naturally tanned =D ::points to profile for proof:: XD How many times have you played it? If you've only played at a friend's house or an arcade (there's about 400 machines in California, so don't tell me you've never seen one,) a few times then don't worry about it. Do you think people just get really good at something by doing it once? (speaking of getting good at something, I've been trying to whistle. I can whistle better blowing in than out. But I still can't whistle consistantly, or find a way to change the pitch.) I'm feeling light-headed now. Actually Frank's hot sauce I could chug by the gallon, although I have almost no tolerence for spicy foods. Man, that stuff is GOOOOD. It's pleasantly tangy, then it's liquid fire. We should have a slogan for this thread. I think I've come up with a good one. "The Clarinet Section--The Only Place Where Band Geeks Talk About Everything Not Nessecarily Including Band" But for once, I do have something band related. Okay. My cousin gave me a list with the names of the major scales and how many sharps or flats they include. I've been trying to find the concert scales they correspond to, and its mostly working. You go down two half steps, right? cuz that's what I've been doing, but it's not working out for Gb Major and Cb Major. Any help would be appriciated.

if that's the non-concert pitch then Gb is Ab and Cb is Db. You go up a tone (a step, or two half steps, sorry, i'm australian) But if it's concert you go down that much. eg, concert C major is D major for a clarinet. Hope that helped ^^

Miyoko Clarinetti flaming ninja-so brave! and yes that should be the slogan ^_^. ahh...wait I think I can find out the concert scales that they correspond to through the circle of fifths and fourths! ^_^...uh but i can't remember it right now emo my clarinet has been rebeling against me for two weeks so which part is the brave one again? I'm sortof thinking it could be DDR, but how is that brave? cuz when anyone plays it, both the veterans and the beginners, they look like fools. You can flail your arms about like you're drowning, or ask the knowledgable DDR people for help. Yeah. Some good players are nice, or anti-social but not mean, and some would find any reason to put you down. But the nice and anti-social ones are the most common. The circle of fifths and fourths? Do you always have to be so smart? Oh, and don't kill yourself on finding that info. I probably won't need it until high school band tryouts. angel_the_silent: Sure, guys that play the clarinet aren't that common (I only know four: my dad, two kids in elementry school who probably quit by now, and charlie who is probably the best I know IRL,) but who cares what everybody else thinks? You should like who you are and what you do, not conform to other people's standards. I'm a geek, a band geek, a gamer, and I sew. And I don't care who knows.

Oh, I was wondering what kind of thumb rest everyone uses. I've seen some huge ones, like my other cousin's. It slips on the thumb rest and is about 2 cm thick. My clarinet did have one that was glued to the metal part of the thumb rest (it was only like 1 mm thick though,) and in 7th grade band camp it started coming off so I just ripped it off and lived without it.
