Maia had noticed hers hadn't gone as high as Toby's, and grinned at him when he gave a displeased face. She did as instructed, splashing again. "You're the best," she said. "Now we can splash Dari expertly!"

This time he had at least the foresight to turn his head and get the blast of water in the cheek. He closed his eyes and smiled.
"I don't know how effective it'd be! He doesn't... blink or breathe or anything!" Then he shoved his arms forward and splashed Maia again.

"He cheats," Maia said, before returning Toby's splash. She hadn't mastered avoiding the splashes, so she got lake water in the face. She sputtered, but grinned at him. She wondered if they could come here often. This was fun!

There was no stop. Toby grinned back and began a barrage to show up any group of rowdy preteens. He soon began to laugh, half-blinded by water and occasionally unable to breathe.

Completely and utterly soaked, eyes blurry from getting water in them, Maia chose to dive underwater and sneak up behind Toby. She put her hands on his shoulders. "You win," she surrendered. Toby certainly seemed to be an expert splasher. She couldn't keep up!

He wasn't oblivious to the dive, but he had no idea what was coming after. Rather than a violent attack, though, he felt warm hands on his shoulders and turned his head to try and see Maia the best he could.
"I win!" he parroted, thrusting his arms in the air and fighting the urge to grab Maia and drop them both into the water. Instead he took her arms at the wrists and began to slog through the water, pulling her like a towboat.

Maia wasn't expecting the ride, but Toby had her giggling. He certainly did like winning. He was a great swimmer as well! "We can have another contest later," She said. "Its really beautiful here." It was. The rest of Arizona might not have been much to look at, but this was wonderful.

Toby dare not go any deeper than he could walk lest he try to swim and kick Maia somewhere unpleasant but he had no problem towing her around. It was almost girlfriend-like and he was well aware of it, but what should he care? They were having fun, the both of them. A little flirtation never hurt anyone.
"Yeah? I'm glad you think so," he said. He'd agree that a lot of Arizona was barren, but he tried to keep to the greener parts and here at the beach.

"Not so keen on the drive to hq," She mused. Could they come often? Skip the mall and come here instead? Toby seemed to be enjoying it more than he had the mall trip. And it didn't really cost money, besides gas. She leaned against him. "Want to race again?"

"Sure," Toby nodded, "To where?" He figured he probably still had a leg up on Maia because, well, he'd been swimming with his legs longer than she had. He enjoyed winning, but against someone with almost no chance it was only in fun. He didn't feel that same competitive edge. He lost on purpose sometimes. It was actually nice to not have to worry.

Maia pointed to the bouy they had raced to before. She wanted to get into practice and become a better swimmer. Racing seemed like a good way to go about that. "You know, when I first raced Dari, I really stunk at swimming. I've gotten better, though. You're even better than he is."

"Swimming can be hard to get a hang of," Toby admitted, "Kids take classes all the time. It's amazing Dari's as coordinated as he is, really. Alright, you ready?" He turned to face the same buoy after releasing Maia's arms.

"I'll get a hang of it," Maia assured Toby with a smile. "I've gotten better. And Dari cheats. He turned himself into a merman in Oregon. Tail and everything! Course, maybe I cheat too." She moved beside him. "Ready!"

"You will," Toby agreed. He didn't comment on Dari's particular form of 'cheating.' If you were able to non-magically alter your body to win, all the more power to you. "Alright. Ready... set... go!" He swam off toward the buoy again, slowing himself somewhat to give Maia a bit of an ego boost. Really he was impressed she was trying to do anything but doggie-paddle. That was how kids started.

Maia started after Toby. Hm. He was going slower than he had their previous race! Had she worn him out already? Oh well, she wasn't going to pass up the chance. She came up along side him, making to move ahead of him.
