Lin laughed, she knew she shouldn't have but she couldn't help it because the reaction she got looking back on it was funny.

"Levi once asked me what was the most beautiful place I've been to, this was back before we ever sailed and I told him the Borderlands was the most beautiful place."

She look over to Luk and explained.

"Angels like myself are not born with wings, we fledge or sprout them in our older years so for most of my life I was thought to be human."

She looked back up at Earendil, "He was amazed and asked how I managed to get in there without being killed. There were rumours from the Maiar being there to people who went to the Borderlands never came back the same.... rumours about a human who wielded thunder and never aged.. granted the last one was actually the only true thing, except the wielding thunder part I have no clue how that one came about."

She paused for a moment and then added.

"Actually that's kind of a lie, I told Dad about it and he cracked up saying he once took a gun which made a really loud bang noise with him to the Four Lands, except he said he did that long before Haven was founded."

Earendil and Luk both laughed.

"Well, if the stories about Haven have reached here, then I'm sure they're all going to be very nervous," Earendil chuckled. "Especially if they realize that Halmir and Arthael were two of the most active fighters there. And I would imagine that in a town like this, where they're so desolate, they were probably one of the towns that were in on the slave trading. The promise of gold would be quite tempting to people in a place like this ..."

Lin looked thoughtful about that, Earendil had a point.

"That's a good point actually," she admitted, "At the height of slavery when the slavers were the boldest Haven would sometimes take on the task of releasing one or two slavers with a strong message.... Dad hated doing that, but it had gotten to the point where the slavers had raided a whole town."

She could only imagine how horrified others were upon seeing those men.

Earendil tried to think back to when that had happened. It wasn't very long ago, to his knowledge ...

"You know," he said slowly, "it's quite possible that some of the people that were made examples of ... might still be around."

Which would explain a lot. Legends of a human who didn't grow old living and/or working with elves ... and then Luk showed up with a handful of elves ... the humans probably thought Luk was Donovan!

Lin paused for a moment, Earendil had a good point. Haven started over sixty years ago but the "catch and release" policy was put into place. She also recalled that her father had at one point taken mercy on one slaver and released him back unharmed.

She remembered because her father had muttered he was getting old and soft.

"That is a good point, it's kind of easy to forget that since I was still going from Gaia to here often."

Earendil nodded. "So for you it's hard to know how much time has passed, and how recently some of these things would have happened. Even Shiro says the constant passing through the portal is disorienting, whenever he enters another world. And I know what he means ... it's ... a very strange feeling, coming home and realizing a day has passed and you've only been gone half an hour."

He looked up and down the street, but it was quite deserted now. Even the children had gone inside. "I think it might be best if we head back to camp," he said quietly. "I have a bad feeling about this place."

He couldn't explain why, he just did.

Luk didn't question him. He had learned over the centuries to listen to elven instincts - they were far more honed than those of humans.

"Let's go," he agreed without hesitating.

"It's too quiet," Miyuki told her ada, "Not fun at all."

She didn't like it here really, the bakery was dingy and not nice, and the town was so empty.

"And it's sad."

She didn't realize there was more wrong with it than being sad, but she was young and inexperienced (and certainly less paranoid).

Earendil smiled sadly at Miyuki. He knew what she meant, and she was right. It was sad, that the town would be allowed to fall into such a state. Sad that the people wouldn't take care of it, sad that the king didn't care ... everything about it was sad.

"Maybe the next town we see will be better," he said brightly as he began to lead the way back to their camp. "Emile did say that this town was like this because it's so far away from the capital."

Miyuki wasn't convinced, not that she didn't believe her ada when he said that maybe the next one will be better, but she didn't think it was like that because it was far away from the capital.

"Haven is far away from the big city and it's not run down.. okay it's not a town but it's not run down neither," she replied.

Earendil didn't bother to point out that Haven was run by Elves, not humans. He didn't want to make Miyuki as prejudiced as he knew he himself was. If she came to the conclusion herself later on that humans in general didn't care about the world they lived in, and lived only for themselves, that would be fine. She didn't need other people telling her that.

"It's a different society," he said finally. "I don't like it any more than you do, but there's nothing I can do about it either."

Well that much Miyuki understood, she had listened to the adults after all. She didn't understand still why elves weren't like so much, but maybe if they tried to get to know each other maybe then things would be happier.

"Don't worry," Lin replied, "We're leaving tomorrow, which is good. We're not liked much here, and hopefully as we travel closer to the larger cities they'll... well care a bit less about what we are."

"That's not what Emile said," Luk said with a frown. He looked as if he were about to say more, but Earendil spoke up, cutting him off.

"Maybe it would be best if we kind of hurried through this leg of the trip," he suggested. "The human lands are not very safe as is, and if this is any indication, we might be best off if we go straight for the capital and then head north to the Westland."

At least in the Westland, their only danger would be wild animals.

Lin switched to high elven and moments like this secretly wished there was at least one language she could keep from her daughter but eventually she was going to have to learn this too.

"It is a hope, not a fact," Lin replied, "I do not want her to think all humans here are hostile, if she comes to this thought it must be on her own."

Luk's eyes lightened in understanding, and he nodded slowly.

"My apologies," he said softly, bowing his head to Lin apologetically. "I am still not used to having children to think of. Forgive me."

He himself wanted to prevent as much prejudice as possible, though admittedly he didn't like misleading people either. It could be like giving her false hope, which would only make her disappointment all the greater if they did go down there and find only more discrimination than here.

"It's alright, I find this difficult myself," Lin admitted.

Growing up she had been well aware the humans here were not like the humans back home. She would admit growing up in Haven had coloured her world a bit, but she would try her best to not think badly of anyone. It was not a proper Gaian thing to do (or a Winters thing to do).

She knew also she would have to teach Miyuki eventually how to handle such discrimination, she was after all a kitsune with an elf for a father and an angel for a mother.
