I look at them, roll my eyes and walk away because they are so ignorant its a waste of my time to talk to them.
I've had it happen at least once. Ooh ever hears of Patricia A. McKillip? she'd got some interesting books. Ye should give The Old Kingdom books a try (Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen), By Garth Nix
Same with the Keys to The Kingdom (Mister Monday, Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, Sir Thursday, Lady Friday), again by Garth Nix. There's two more books on the way, Superior Saturday and Lord Sunday, 2008 and '09 release respectively.

The Old Kingdom series is good if you like magic and stuff, but it's not the wishy-washy wave-my-wand magic, It's proxy magic, like Necromancing and bell magic
