It doesn't matter how powerful of a prison you have, she can get out...as long as she can convince Van or someone else to give her enough plot armor... As for why revenge, its for the severity of the punishment. A year in trison to get mentally and physically tortured just for taking an unauthorized vacation? I once went AWOL from my job for a week, and I just got yelled at and lost some pay. If I spent a year in jail for it (especially the kind you described) hell yeah I'd want to go rambo on their asses! You have to think about some of the things that could have happened to her.
Her punishment was justified.
1- She could have gotten captured and interrogated for Mists top secret stuff.
2- Once again. She could have been killed, dragged off into some place to be later used as jutsu fodder.
3- If you take an unauthorized vacation. You have no papers explaining your business in the village. So that could raise hostility towards Mist...or even take it as an act of war/ spying. Whatever their verdict.
THESE ARE NINJA, NOT REGULAR CIVILIANS! EXACTLY!!!

Went AWOL from your JOB? Was it in the military? I highly doubt it. Of course it would be something like that! But years back, in just the last century, if you went AWOL you were KILLED or sent to prison for a LOT LONGER THAN ONE YEAR!!!

First and foremost!
Tools of war and need to obey the rules of war. Doesn't matter HOW young you are. If you can't understand that, then I hope you never had any dreams of going into the army. FYI I actually am going to the army. And don't get me wrong, I understand the need to discipline soldiers that go AWOL, but stuff like what was just pulled is how good ninja get put on the path to becoming dangerous criminals. You hate the kage, then you start to hate the village in extention, and then you get to let the hate stew within you for a year in jail while you're getting physically and mentally abused in prison. Then in like 20 years when that ninja comes back and levels the village and kills everyone in it, everyone wondes where it all went wrong... ...Anyway, you can just ignore me here. The going to jail thing actually makes for a more interesting story than getting a pat on the wrists for it. -_-;;;
Reallly, just to end it- you guys are all just jumping the gun on this. If you let things play out as they're going to, all ya'll who're saying 'she should try to get revenge/hate the Mizukage' MIGHT end up rethinking those statements
Everything has a purpose~ Not true! The appendix doesn't have a purpose except sometimes making people die of appendicitis... *changes into dark clothes and flips hair emo-style* And...life has no purpose either... emo *goes into emo corner and cuts self* AHA! SEE?
It helps cut down the population!
As for emos with no purpose in their corners cutting themselves and attempting suicide- well they're a good laugh for me! THAT'S their purpose! biggrin

Cowardice is a DISPLAY of one's weakness. Weakness can often be overcome through will power. Cowardice is lack of will power and surrender to weakness and allowing it to consume the inner recesses of the psyche. Now that you mention it, it does kinda sound Hitler-esque. But I don't know much about his actual mentality, just his self-hatred issues / deep rooted insecurity issues / sociopath / mass-murderous tendencies. (in order of occurrence). I believe, honestly, that cowardice is the only unforgivable weakness.

Well, in most of my IRL rants I usually go off saying 'the weak deserve to die and SHOULD be killed off' in a similar manner to how Hitler took care of things... and my school being my school, we kinda go off on a collective tangent about 'ruling the world' and how they'd never want it to be me. Then I go over a bit of my plans.... including how I plan to kill off everyone who I feel doesnt deserve life. SO yeah- the words 'the next potential Hitler' and 'misanthrope' have been thrown around sweatdrop
But we also go off on debates on the Zombie Appocalypse and Star Wars vs Star Trek in math class XDDDD
