You do realize the security systems and set up are designed to hold in ninja that are even at the same level as the Akatsuki, right? (sure, an akatsuki member COULD still make it out but a genin.... yeah, good luck with that)
@Riko: Revenge for what? For letting her LIVE??? Silly MQuinn, you must not know. It doesn't matter how powerful of a prison you have, she can get out...as long as she can convince Van or someone else to give her enough plot armor... As for why revenge, its for the severity of the punishment. A year in trison to get mentally and physically tortured just for taking an unauthorized vacation? I once went AWOL from my job for a week, and I just got yelled at and lost some pay. If I spent a year in jail for it (especially the kind you described) hell yeah I'd want to go rambo on their asses! You have to think about some of the things that could have happened to her.
Her punishment was justified.
1- She could have gotten captured and interrogated for Mists top secret stuff.
2- Once again. She could have been killed, dragged off into some place to be later used as jutsu fodder.
3- If you take an unauthorized vacation. You have no papers explaining your business in the village. So that could raise hostility towards Mist...or even take it as an act of war/ spying. Whatever their verdict.
THESE ARE NINJA, NOT REGULAR CIVILIANS! EXACTLY!!!

There could be some leniency, like house arrest and community service or some crap like that. Plus, wouldn't it also be the fault of the people at the gates for letting her get through in the first place? Everybody runs their village differently.
Mist throws them in a**-rape jail, while Sound just kills you for leaving.
No- I'm not joking. You get killed. <_<

And don't get me wrong, I understand the need to discipline soldiers that go AWOL, but stuff like what was just pulled is how good ninja get put on the path to becoming dangerous criminals. You hate the kage, then you start to hate the village in extention, and then you get to let the hate stew within you for a year in jail while you're getting physically and mentally abused in prison. Then in like 20 years when that ninja comes back and levels the village and kills everyone in it, everyone wondes where it all went wrong... ...Anyway, you can just ignore me here. The going to jail thing actually makes for a more interesting story than getting a pat on the wrists for it.
