PostPosted: Wed Aug 22, 2007 2:53 pm

lol - I might watch it.

The lead actress used to be in Eastenders (the shame). She was also in Jekyll.

Heroes is so overrated.
Explain please.

Well, the story is plot-driven more than character-driven, so the cast is not as interesting as, say, Buffy, I don't find the plot as incredibly compelling (personal opinion; maybe it picks up the pace, I'm only seven episodes in). It also really has no sense of humour about itself -- and I find their "this is a show about what would happen if people got powers in the real world", with all the implications that people in the real world wouldn't have a sense of humour about their situation somewhat obnoxious. neutral

It doesn't have the same continuity or characterisation[1] issues as Smallville, but for instance its cracked take on evolution is not really better in terms of storytelling than SV's "kryptonite gives people superpowers" contrivance -- but they masquerade it (1) like it's an original idea (when it's been lifted pretty much straight from X-Men), and (2) like it's realistic and compelling.

It's not bad, and I enjoy it. But I don't see what's so ground-breaking or fantastic about it at the same time.

Heroes doesn't have much couple drama... maybe that is why I don't watch it? Idk. X-men had that type of stuff, though it was really messed up most of the time. Lots of dying and coming back... like Lana.

Yes!!!! Thank you! Now I finally have an intelligent, in-depth answer for "Why dont you like 'Heroes'?". I've never liked for the simple fact that its a show on NBC. IMO, NBC usually puts out lame shows. With the exception of Law and Order: SVU. That show rocks!

Oh, Im not going to watch bionic woman... It seems like "Gilmore girls" with superpowers.... stare

No humour? There’s humour plenty, trust me: SPOILER (I think) Hiro and Ando decide to test out Hiro’s abilities in a card game… But for most part, the powers exhibited don’t leave much room for humour. Yes, healing is nifty, but you’ve got to get hurt for that to happen, and Claire has been hurt pretty major (ramifications from continuous exposure to harm… not good to the mind/emotions/soul/etc); the mimic ability, while offering multitude abilities, leaves you potentially unstable; Isaac was screwed from the beginning, and his power drew on that; and on and on it goes.

It’s the fact that these are people, more or less, who live on the darker side of life, where their reactions to using these powers, overall, is not satisfaction, but horror, distrust, and a sense of alienation. Their abilities do not leave room for playfulness because their abilities are faint mirrors of their own life and personalities.

And now, this part isn’t aimed at you, but COME ON! Of course Heroes is going to seem like X-Men! The X-Men franchise has every bloody power conceivable, so of course, yes, people from Heroes are going to share some of those abilities, most notably Claire/Wolverine. What makes this trait endearing about the show rather than irritable? Because there was a sense of dreaminess about the X-men world: there are young mutants who, if located by Xavier, are whisked away to an expensively designed institute where they can stay and learn and have fun until their eyes bleed. Some would call this a haven from the cruelties of the world, but it’s also a dysfunctional escape from the truth. The idea is sound, no doubt, but let’s not sugarcoat things either. (I like X-men though, so let’s not get it twisted)

Heroes: real people in the outside world on their own, left to cope with their power—or not. Not everyone will understand what they’ve got, not everyone will be inclined to use it for good, etc. There’s the realism in the show that attracts and holds the viewer’s attention.

Are there bad points about the show? Yes (Season finale was HORRIBLE!). Do these detract from the experience? No, because Heroes offers the superhero “tale” as it should be, plain and simple.

How about let's not rag on Gilmore Girls stare Male Shovenist pigs don't understand that show. You haven't even WATCHED Bionic Woman, how can you already be JUDGING it? OR are you nto watching it because you don't like the idea that a woman actually HAS more power then an average man?

That's not true -- look at shows like Angel, which dealt with dark subject matter and still managed to be funny at the same time. The dialogue in Heroes doesn't take advantage of opportunities to lighten the tone; it's like everything has to be heavy and "gritty" because heavy and gritty is a cheap way to make things seem realistic.

BlackChaos_kds
And now, this part isn’t aimed at you, but COME ON! Of course Heroes is going to seem like X-Men!

I wasn't talking about the whole show. I was talking about the "meta-genes" idea, which Heroes masquerades as being incredibly interesting, when all it's doing is propogating myths about evolutionary theory. The idea itself isn't bad, but the way it's executed is irksome and it's really not all that interesting.

BlackChaos_kds

Right, but it's hardly the first time that angle as been taken. Other superhero stories aren't set in the "fake world" after all. And like I said, they muster a more "real" feeling at times through cheap tricks like eschewing the idea that people in dark situations can ever crack a joke when the base story isn't as original or hyper-realistic as it's made out to be.

BlackChaos_kds

Sort of. Superheroics raises all sorts of interesting ideas, and in terms of exploring them I'd say Heroes is pretty much average. And well, some people would say that superhero stories are supposed to be escapist.

And in other news... Erica Durance is hosting the CW's fall preview.
