"I better." Terryn still held him close, as if unable to believe that they would have to part. "I can not believe this is the last we may see of each other..." Her voice cracked a bit at the end but she forced herself not to cry any more than she already was.

"Perhaps it is better if you do not," Marcus said, looking away. "I, for one, would much prefer it if you expected to see me later."

Terryn wiped her eyes and gave him another kiss before trying to force herself away. "Write me as soon as possible. Tonight if you can."

Marcus nodded. "If you do not hear from me for some time, write to Dr. Drabinsky. He will be able to contact me." The distant echo of a rifle musket sounded, and Marcus swallowed again. "They're searching for me. Leave now, please."

((they had rifles back then? EDIT:wikipedia says they do so thats good enough for me!))

Terryn nearly jumped at the sound and nodded quickly, feeling frantic. "I love you, Marcus. Be safe." She repeated for about the millionth time before giving him a final kiss, prolonging it as long as possible before she climbed into the carriage and shut the door.

"I love you too!" shouted Marcus, as the coachman gave him a sympathetic look and cracked his whip. He watched the coach hurry away from him and become smaller and smaller. When it was all but invisible, Marcus took up his bag again, wiped the corners of his eyes, and began walking towards Dr. Drabinsky's.

Terryn, now not needing to be strong at all, completely dissolved into tears, feeling as though she was going to rip apart from the inside out. She gripped her skirts and pulled at them, trying to release all of her pent up tension as she drove farther and farther from Marcus. She wanted to just jump out and go after him again, but she knew he would not allow it.

He had not yet reached the doctor's house when they captured him. He did not struggle or resist, and the guards seemed to be grateful for that much. "The young Duke, Marcus Damein Winters of England. Arrested for one count of attempted murder. No bail," called someone. A few of the guards shuddered, and Marcus found his hands chained together and walking alongside a horse to the jail house.

((thats gonna take weeks, so ok!))

"Two weeks she's been up in her room crying..." The earl shook his head sadly, looking almost in tears himself. He felt awful, and just wanted her to come out for once. She hadn't spoken to him since she returned, and he only assumed that Marcus had pulled his usual tricks and left her heartbroken and alone.

The Duchess only sank deeper and deeper into her seat. Oh, she had warned Marcus to not get so involved. "I am...so very sorry."

Marcus was only half-listening through the trial. He was rather hungry and very tired, and he ached for Terryn terribly. But he did hear the verdict. Imprisonment for one year. It was bittersweet news.

The earl just sat there in silence. "And no word from Marcus, either?"
PostPosted: Mon Feb 12, 2007 9:28 pm

The Duchess shook her head. "None. I've sent letters, of course, inquiring about his whereabouts and health. And this was a week or two ago."

Dear Terryn,

The verdict has been declared. After much deliberation, the judge has decided that I am fit to live, and my only punishment will be a year's imprisonment. I miss you more than I can express. Be warned that you will be bombarded with letters daily.

With much love,
Marcus

This was hastily written on a small piece of parchment that Marcus found lying around. He begged a quill from the jury, and handed off his letter to his lawyer before being marched back into his cell.

Terryn sat with baited breath, her hands trembling as she held the piece of parchment and refused to read it. She felt almost sick to her stomach at the thought of what might be in the letter. Finally, she forced herself to slowly unfold the nnote and read what he had written.

All at once, she felt about fifty different emotions: ecstasy, relief, sadness, longing, you name it, she felt it. All this led to her breaking down at her desk, sobbing tears of mostly joy before she was able to take up her quill and write a response.

Marcus,

You mean to tell me that you will only be writing daily? Unable to lift a quill to send me an update every hour? I jest of course, but I do wish that you could be around to speak to me through more than your letters. I am just thankful that you will not be hanged for this. I know I have said it before, but again I apologize for all of this. If I had not acted so rash, none of this would have happened. I hope that your time in prison will not change your opinion of me, or make you lose interest at all. Perhaps I should come visit you? If not, I await your return, especially since I shudder at the thought of having to spend more time with a certain Andrew DuBois. My love is with you, and do not forget it. Nor forget how grateful I am for all you have done for me. If you wish, I will tell your grandmother what has happened. I daresay she will have rather mixed feelings: hurt by the events but perhaps relieved by the fact that you are not off philandering again. It is up to you, though. Until we speak again.

All my love,
Terryn
