Dari gave Maia a brief smile and a nod, along with an 'mm-hm' of agreement. He then busied himself with digging through the bag to find a book he'd like to lounge and read.
"Yes, ma'am," Toby said, saluting Maia casually. Of course 'getting ready' meant stripping off his shirt and then his shorts and there he was in his stylish swim trunks. "Race you there?" The swimming area was clearly marked, first by the "no lifeguard on duty" sign and finally by the buoys that demanded you go no further.

"Sure. Ready, go!" The selkie took off towards the water. It didn't seem to trouble her that there was no life guard; if Toby tried to drown, she could rescue him. It was nice to be out in nature, she decided. She couldn't wait to swim!
"I'll race you to that bouy," she challenged him.

Toby took off after the selkie, stumbling once with his bare feet in the sand. He beat her there and dove into the water, then emerged with a groan. That had been a bit of a shock to the system! He blew water from his lips and then turned toward the buoys. "Don't go any further!" and he headed out to race her there.

Maia turned to grin at him. The water was chillier than she'd expected, but pleasant. The selkie swam backwards for a moment, watching Toby, before turning around and heading to the buoy. Once there, she rested against it. "Why can't we go further?" she asked.

"The rest of the lake is for the boats. It's to keep idiots from getting run-over." Toby swam up beside Maia and tread water. The longer he stayed in the water, the more his body got used to the chill. "I mean, we could, but it can be dangerous." He only saw a few boats, one of them with fishing lines cast off the side.

Maia nodded in understanding. Being run over by a boat wasn't on her to do list. "No, we can stay here," she said. She sent a wave of water towards Toby, grinning at him. "It'll be fun!"

Toby smiled but turned his head slightly away from the wave as it was sent his way. There was barely a moment before he retaliated, drawing the length of his arm from front to side with is flesh just beneath the water. The wave produced would be enough to rise over Maia's head and splash down on her.

"Hey!" Maia had been surprised by the wave, and protested as it came down on her. She went under water then and turned to send a spray of water towards him. She broke the surface. "You cheated," She said.

"How did I cheat?!" Toby asked with a laugh, "by being better at splashing than you?" That being said he laced his hands together at the thumbs and sent a large rush directly for Maia's chest and head.

"Yes. You'd think I'd be better, seeing as I've lived in the water." She sent a splash in his direction, wiping at her eyes. "How'd you do that?" She asked. She swam closer to him and did a close ranged attack.

"Without arms, though!" Toby added, helping Maia's defense. Of course he turned away wen she splashed him again but returned his gaze to her when she spoke, and ten hit him again. He he'd up his hands in defense.
"Hey! You don't get any help if you attack the instructor!"

"I won't attack again," she promised. Not until he taught her how to splash properly, anyway. She waited for him to teach. "If Dari were swimming with US we could both splash him. Next time can we come at a time he can swim?"

"We can try. Legally the lake closes around eight or something but it's in an 'assume the risk of your own actions' kind of way. They don't rope it off or anything." Some laws were just silly, after all.
"Okay, come here." Toby swam a bit of a ways back toward shore where he could plant his feet and then some. He waited for Maia to join him before thrusting out an arm at his side.
"You want to be just underneath the water with no skin showing on top. Your thumb has to be right there."

"I'm sure we'll be safe," she said. "There isn't a kelpie here, it'd have tried to get us already. And you won't drown with me here," She assured him. She followed him towards the shore and listened to his instructions. She mimicked him and sent a SWOOOSH of water towards him.
"Like that?" she asked.

Toby was splashed from the nose down and he gave an unhappily damp sort of face. People didn't usually catch on that quick.
"Go a little closer to the surface." Which would probably throw it over his head. Why was he doing this again?
