Reaper laughed some at her.
He hadn't laughed in a very long time.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 21, 2010 6:35 pm

Slowly she stopped giggling but let the satisfied smile stay on her face. She had succeeded in two things. 1) getting Reaper to loosen up a little and 2) helping both of them forget for a little bit and just smile.

"Ah, I haven't laughed in so long. It feels good! OH YEA! Kay made some Chili. Do you want some? It's gooooooood!"

Her smile turned a little goofy - the way it used to be before all of this - as she telked to this serious Block Ops. man. It was so easy to be herself and let herself trust him.

"Sure I am hungry."
Reaper answers to Sam.
He smiled at her.
This was in a way a strange family.
Like a team. He always liked being in a team.

She grinned as she scooted over to the pot of chili. It still smelt so good and was even warm! She hummed to herslef as she served him a bowl and handed it to him.

Ya know, she thought, this is kind of like a strange family. Like a team. Slowly, her eyes dulled a little bit and she sighed. Reaper did not like teams. It wouldn't last.

As she looked back up at Reaper, she took great care to plaster a smile on her face. It would do no good to be sad. Be happy while it last, after all.

As Reaper started to eat the chili he looked over at Sam and could see that she was faking a smile.
"What is with the fake smile?"
He asks as he eats.
"Don't deny that it is because I can tell that it is. Ex-Black-Ops. You learn these things, if you can remember that."
He says to her still eating.

Sam let her smile trun downwards into a grimace. It was so obvious wasn't it? Ah well. She didn't want to tell him. It might make it easier for him ot leave. Yet, when she looked over at him, he had on a look that made her cringe a little bit. It was obviously his Black Ops. face.

"Well, I just realized. You, Kayla and I are sort of like a strange messed up family. Or a team or something. Then I remembered that you don't like teams. I just realized that I shouldn't get comfortable with you guys, cause this isn't permanent."

She hung her head a little bit, waiting for a biting remark.

Reaper grinned.
"Well you are wrong. It might just be permanent. I said I don't like teams just so because I don't trust well. But if I do get to trusting someone then it is the best thing that could happen. So we are a team. I love to be in a team. A heck of a lot easier to survive when you are in a team."
He says to her still grinning.

Sam's head snapped up and her eyes sparkled just a little bit. It couldn't be. But it was. Reaper had just made her night. Or life. Whatecver, not important. Her face slowly broke into a smile and she laughed loudly, happily. She launched herself at Reaper, tackling him ito a hug.

"Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! You are amazing" she said as she started to cry a little bit with joy.

"Ahhh!"
Reaper yelled in complete surprise at being tackled by Sam.
He looked at her taken aback by this at first.
Then he laughed and hugged her back.
"Your welcome then. I guess."
He says to her rather sheepishly.

Sam smiled ridiculously as she leaned away from Reaper. She had a famliy again. In her mind she made herself a promise.

No matter what, I won't let what happened to Dada happen to them. No way. I'll carry Reaper and his weapons case if I have to, but I wont leave him or Kay.

So Mr Black Ops. What are you gonna do when Kay finishes finding the cure and the wrold gets fixed?

Three weeks later, Kayla sat atop the building they had come to inhabit, staring out over the city skyline. She was absentmindedly polishing her hunting knife as she hummed the tune to a song she had not heard in months. It had been a rough go, but between herself and Sam, the two girls had been able to move an unconscious Reaper into a small apartment building they had fortified as a safe house. They had been living, quite comfortably, as they waited for Reaper's injuries to heal.

Kayla had been quite shocked, as well as impressed that he had been able to stave off Acid Infection. She knew that this was mostly due to the research she had been able to complete before he had been bitten and the fact that she had been consistently altering the formula over the past few weeks to keep him in decent health. Sam had proved to be quite the scavenger and had been quite adept at finding food for their small motley crew. Kayla had never been able to shake the sense of fear that overwhelmed her every time Sam had left on her own though...she supposed it was just a sign of affection on her part.

Reaper was surprising Kayla every day with how quickly he was recovering, and keeping him in bed long enough for his ribs and concussion to heal had been a constant trial. There had been one point where she had to threaten him with bodily harm if he didn't stay put. He always seemed to laugh off her worry though, and for that she was grateful; there was not nearly enough laughter in the world any more.

She realized her humming had become full blown singing as she heard an Acid in the distance screech in reply, and she fell silent with a sigh, quietly returning to her work.

Sam darted between buildings quickly, making her way steadily to the safe house that herself and Kayla had fortified. It had been a rough few weeks, but they were all making leaps and bounds in a positive direction. Reaper's injuries were healing alarmingly quickly, and Sam couldn't help but wonder if it was in some way related to the Stasis formulas that Kayla kept pumping into his blood. Kayla was working furiously at said Stasis. Everyday, her research got more and more in depth. Both Kayla and Sam felt that the stasis might work for a longer period of time than they had previously thought.

While Reaper had been healing, he had been working with both Sam and Kayla on many talents that he felt both of them should possess. Kayla was being taught how to cook, and certain tactics for entering potentially dangerous Acid Zones. Sam, he decided to teach proper aim with a fire arm. He brutally railed her for wasting ammunition on multiple occasions.

Sam couldn't keep allowing herself to be distracted, however. She was out at peek Acid time. This was the point of day were the Acids seemed to be running more wild than usual. Sam hadn't meant to be out that long, but it had taken her longer than usual to find the supplies that Kayla had asked for. As she darted down the alley to the entrance to the Safe House, an Acid shrieked and started running after her. She started to panic. A gunshot right now, or even another Acid Cry could get her mobbed with the undead. She quickly dashed through the door, and shut it behind her, locking the many bolts and chains behind her.

Sam was home, and it was time to check on her companions and friends.

Kayla jumped to her feet as she heard the door slam downstairs shortly after a shrill screech of an Acid. She sheathed her knife and raced through the door to the stairs. She pulled out her .22's and held them at the ready as she raced down to the main floor. This was the way things always went when Sam went out. Kayla met her, guns at the ready at the main door and then checked her over for any injuries. She knew it was something she did out of sheer paranoia, but the one thing in the world that scared her the most, more than the swarms of the undead pounding at their doors, or the thought of Priest discovering their hiding place before Reaper was fully healed, was the though of loosing one of her closest friends to the disease that had torn apart their world.

Reaper had already had a close shave with death and Kayla knew that he would not be long for this world without her constant work on the Stasis. He was the main reason that she toiled night and day on searching for a cure; she knew however, that none could be found without the missing research.

As she made her way down to the entry way, she peaked over the stair railing and saw her friend depositing bags upon bags of supplies onto the ground. She approached with caution and raised her guns, somehow managing to smile at the girl.

"Hands up Missy."

Sam smiled gently as she placed the rest of her bags on the floor. This was a ritual that she and Kayla had long since perfected. Kayla would talk to her and sheepishly admit that she needed more supplies, and Sam would nod and smile, secretly terrified of scavenging in the city again. However, the next day, Sam would gear up, wearing flexible but strong materials, and carrying many empty bags, all stuffed into a loose canvas sack on her back. Kayla would walk her to the bottom door and tell her quite sternly to not get hurt, get the stuff they needed and get the hell out of there, and back home. And every morning that she went out, Sam would leave the house smiling, as Kayla locked the doors and tried to pretend not to be afraid for her. Sam always smiled when she first left and when she got home, because she knew she had somewhere to return to. It was home, and it was safe, and it brought with it a sense of loving.

With her bags placed securely on the floor, Samwise stood to her full height with her hands held up beside her head. She looked directly at Kayla and smiled happily.

"Hey, Kayla. What's for dinner?"

This, too, was part of the ritual. Every night, when Sam came home, Kayla would look her over for injuries, again, trying to hide her fear of what she might find. And every night, Sam would stand there, letting Kayla fuss, making small talk and trying to lighten the mood that always seemed to descend on her friend whenever Sam returned from her scavenging missions.

Kayla smiled as her friend attempted to make small talk. This was something so familiar to the both of them that she had no need to even ask the girl to remove her clothing that she wore when she went out. Everything was so ritualistic about this; Kayla inspecting Sam for injuries, Sam recounting what she had managed to get and what encounters she had had in the outside world. Kayla absolutely loathed sending Sam out into that hell where anyone she met was out to eat her, but the worst part was that she knew that she could never volunteer to go with the younger girl. Kayla knew that Reaper needed her to stay alive, that Sam would similarly need her if she ever got bitten, and that the whole world might need her to complete the research she had started. She hated that she was so heavily relied upon, and wished nothing more than to chase after the girl every time and force her to go back; Kayla could get her own damn supplies. Wishful thinking.

"I'm glad you're OK. Now, help me get this stuff into the main room. And I tried making stew...but...well let's just say that you get to try it first. Kayla grinned as the girl grimaced in fear. Teaching her to cook has been a long and arduous process, but Reaper was surprisingly patient with her. They carried the bags of food, medical supplies and clothing into the main room where Reaper was sleeping in the corner on a couch.
