"You will not," Marcus said in a tired but unmovable voice. "I cannot--I will not let you." He kissed her once more, fiercely, wishing that the two of them could disappear together. "Once I am dead, there will be nothing for you here. And when I am captured, too, you will be treated like a peasant, and kept away from me. There is nothing to be acheived from your staying here." He wanted to stop talking, but more than anything, needed desperately for Terryn to leave. "Go home. Love me at home, Terryn. Be with me in mind and spirit, at home."

Terryn clung to him, wishing that she could just tie him up and take him away. "No...please, we can leave here. We can run. You have many other manors, all over. We can go anywhere we want. France, Germany, back to Scotland, anywhere we so desire. I thought you wanted to save your life and now you speak as though you were already on the gallows."

"I will think of my own life when you are en route to home," Marcus answered, trying to inject some amount of sternness into his voice. "Besides, it does not matter where I am. I will be dragged back here for the trial. My only wish right now is for you to go," he pleaded. "The police have no interest in you--they will not chase you down."

"I can testify for you." Terryn was trying her damndest to be strong, but she knew her resolve was weakening. "Please, Marcus. I can not just go off and allow you to be tried and killed only for saving my life."

Marcus sighed. He felt that he had said everything that there was to be said. "My influence here, my wealth, my power...all of that will disappear the moment that I am captured. We will not have even the funds to return home. I need you to be brave now, Terryn. I need you to go home and not think of me the whole way there."

Terryn took in a deep breath, biting on her bottom lip as she stared at the ground to avoid crying even more. "I will go, but do not think for one second that I will not be thinking of you and desperately wishing that you will be safe."

Marcus exhaled. "That seems justified." He forced himself to be businesslike again. It would help to ease the heaviness in his chest. "Do take care of yourself. Remember to take the medicine you were given."

Terryn nodded slowly, feeling her chest tighten as she sobbed quietly in his shirt. "Marcus...I love you...please be safe." She held onto him tight, as if doing so would some how protect him from the noose.

Marcus swallowed hard. Terryn was a constant presence, and he didn't think he could prolong this goodbye much longer. He was afraid that he would break down and beg for her to stay by him. "I love you too," he said softly. It was the only guarantee that he could make. "And...I will write you the first chance I get. And, good Lord, I love you so much."

Terryn could barely stand to hear him say that. It was as if though it made her want to bind him to her so that she could protect where she knew she could not. "I wish you had told me sooner. We could have had more time together without all the awkwardness surrounding us." She started crying again, trying her best to stay silent but failing miserably.

Marcus enveloped her in his arms once again. "I wish I had too," answered Marcus heavily, resting his chin on top of Terryn's head. "But our time together was not so bad, was it?"

Terryn shut her eyes softly and sighed. "No...it was not. It was more amazing then I thought possible." She squeezed him again tightly. "I do not want to lose you...please be careful."

"And you." Marcus let go of her with one arm and began to walk slowly (morosely, even) back towards the coach silently. "If am I to undergo losing you now, I would like your safety to be ascertained. You can promise me that, can't you?"

Terryn shook her head slowly, holding onto him as tightly as possibly as they walked. "I will do my best, but if I hear that you are to be hanged, know that I will come in during the dead of night with my bow and arrows and kill anyone who tries to take you from me." It was a half joke...but only half.

Marcus smiled thinly. "Good. You'll be the first to hear of my hanging, then." They had arrived at the coach, and Marcus kissed Terryn once more for a long time. "You will hear from me soon."
