I am a sophmore at Carson City High School, Michigan not Nevada. I was second chair this last year and our first and fourth graduated. I march and also play in pep-band. Our school also has Honnors band and I hope to be in that this year. The thing was filled last year and the first chair flute who is also going to be a sophmore this year, got the spot. We only have about 7 flutes that march, 3 picilo's and the rest are all flags. almost all of our clarinets excpet the sucky back row are also flags. we have a total of oh about 6 or seven trumpets and the clairnets are still un-balanced. Third's don't play loud enough. I am attending Blue Lake Fine Arts camp in a couple of days and I am also attending marching camp a week after I get home from BL. We have a great marching band and we just need a little help. we can march we just need easy music... not many of them can multitask. I play a wooden selmer and I love it to death. I also want to get a vandoreen mouthpeice. It's the mouthpeice that makes all the differance. My band director frowns upon plastic reeds except for marching season. I hate Parking and jamming... it sucks...

we only have like two or three flutes that march. we probably have like seven in all. but we have like 20 clarinets, 19 trumpets, and 16 saxaphones. Odd, huh?

wow, Miyoko, you got it pretty bad. sad

but you still didn't say whether your whole band fits on the football field and stage.

eek that is BAD seven flutes against twenty clarinets and ninteen trumpets (its also bad about the ninteen trumpets and twenty clarinetist O-O) that is ODD....even teh saxes out number them!???

=_= yes I'm left to take care of 40 clarinetist >_>! crying grr

anyways

well, since we're a MS we don't have foot ball fields...well, we can fit onto stages...but for some odd reason once we couldn't fit on stage (O-O) and the mallets had to play behind our conductor...i give them props for that heart
I'm not sure of the exact numbers though. Our BD pretty much accepts anybody who knows how to hold and pretend to play an instrament.

pretty much no middle school/junior high has their own field. Sure, we have a "football field" right next to our school, but it's 95% dirt, and the football team is usually on it. we use the high school/community field and track to practice on. There is also the REAL football field that we and the high school use for games only.

So you're saying that you pretty much don't have a marching band?

ahhh 3nodding i see!

and nope we don't have a marching band sweatdrop though I'm still gonna miss mr. a...and his randomness... crying arghhh best BD ever >w

O_O oh yeahh now i remember! I'm never going to use one scream I shall rebel and use my dear wooden ones!! Unless my hs bd goes off killing me [scary man...don't like his way :[!] or stuart finds out and goes of killing me...o_O;; "I'm not mad!!! I'm just disappointed!" me: rolleyes yeah right....-_-

eek my teacher and I were talking about concertos the other day, by far mozart's is the easiest but...there are so many little things that you have to pay attention to..i think it was the musicality or something that makes its the hardest o-O; anyways he mentioned copland's clarinet concerto he was like, stuart: hmm coplands clarinet concerto..Thats not a very hard piece at all"
me: eek eek eek eek WHAT?! all those weird grace notes [i think?] and high notes...THATS HARD!!
stuart: biggrin xd its so easy you just have to learn the high notes e through A and the rest is easy! Psh...
me: o_O..
::silence::
stuart: okay you could sit down now.
me: ::in my head:...awee but i play better standing crying :: ::reluctantly sits down::

sweatdrop I was playing mozart's clarinet concerto standing..I can't remember why but he asked me to o_O; and he pressured me by saying, "Okay! You're at carnegie hall and theres 5,000 people watching you play this! Don't make a mistake" me: o-okay...::plays::...:SQUEAK: stuart: stare

yeah o_O;;; oh woah i talked alot....I just ate a bunch of apple gummies blaugh yummy stuff!

Hi! We don't really talk about anything much, but please stay and chat!

Really off topic: I learned how to cross-stitch the day before yesterday and I just finished a cute purple butterfly that's about 1.5" squared. I also started a larger 5" by 7" picture of a pair of wolves in the snow with trees and mtns in the background. It looks really nice so far. It's really fun, too.

surprised I wish i could sew! Goodness, Clarinet is practically my only skill... cry well i do take some pretty mean photos though 3nodding

Sewing (well, at least cross-stitching) is pretty easy once you know the basics. Check out your local craft store if you want to try it. You DO have skills, probably some that you just haven't discovered yet. My skills only fall in the range of video games, music (well, maybe not...if Miyoko says she sucks, then I'm probably a lot worse than that), and crafts. But I'm not very pretty (I look like a guy when I put my hair up, even when I clearly wear girl clothes), I have no athletic ability whatsoever, and I can't do my own hair, not even a simple ponytail, I'm sortof clumsy, I have trouble socially interacting with people I don't know, and I can't whistle or snap my fingers.

Things tend to even out for everybody.

Oh yeah, Miyoko, I listened to your recording, and although I can't really say how well you played the piece (because I've never heard it before), I really liked when you played the really low notes. (man, I gotta stop saying really.)

Have you ever felt like you were going to squeak? (not like pre-concert anxiety, more like you can feel it coming when you play the high notes.) Well, I kind of felt like that when you were playing the high notes. I could feel the tension and the squeak waiting to come out. Did you have breathing issues, tighness in your lungs caused by nervousness, or reed size issues? One of those could have been the problem, or it could have just been my imaginattion. Some of the softer notes, specifically at the beginning, came out too soft, and then came in at the correct volume, this was probably caused by worrying about playing it too loud. It was a very subtle mistake, though. The only other thing I noticed was that some of your high notes didn't come out right away, like you weren't blowing hard enough. Everything else seemed good though.

I should record myself sometime...

This was probably the longest and most edited post that I've ever made.

Hey guys, i'm new, I'm a clarinettist though ^^ obviously, or i wouldn't be here razz
Miyoko I listened to your recording razz It sounds pretty good! Just watch where you breathe cause sometimes it ruined the phrase. And when you begin a phrase, because it's so slow and stuff, try not to tongue the first note. But yeah it's pretty good. Listen to lots of recordings of it too ^^
I've never played that concerto, I'm learning a stamitz one atm. It's pretty cool. But i like modern stuff better ^^ razz

I just listened to it too, good job. Articulation was kind of muddy but otherwise good. : )

Keep up the good work.

Oh noes. I don't know what to say...

Okay, I'll try to make this interesting. I'm a 7th grader (gasp), and at our schol we only have a jazz band and a regular class-ish one. According to the band teacher, I'm one of the best clarinetists. (Totally not trying to brag DDDx) Everything seemed really easy (and after playing the harp since I was 7, I was a bit ahead of the game. Music-reading and whatnot, I mean.) so I started taking private lessons. And...yeah. That's all I can think of to say right now. ^^;

>w gonk gonk it has a pretty good reward...you get to play with teh CYSO as a soloist in the next season heart though i'm always thinking, 'what about rehearsals......that'll be hard confused ' anyways, a bunch of piano prodigies and violin prodigies who are like 17-years-old have won it...so...i don't have a chance...it'd be wonderful if I actually did win XD.......

gasp! you can sew?? I remember in fourth grade when we had to make a pumkin confused took me so long........ rofl My skills consist of interpreting (I admite I do a good job at it sweatdrop ) drawing...though not all that great. Video games, and clarinet? nah not clarinet DX i suck...and flaming ninja does not suck at clarinet!!!!! DX. Anyways, D: i'm not pretty either even though a guy asked me out last year in sixth grade...... ninja i'm horrifying and have a utterly big nose when i smile! SO I SHALL FROWNNNN j/k =P but it does get big...and ever since i got my hair straighted my nose seems to have gotten flat my dad said so o.0;;;;;

^_^ I use to play low notes quietly actually, but after listening to sharon kam and how clear it was in the low register that pretty much got me going >w
anyways, my embouchure tightens up too much sometimes, but it IS possible its a reed issue, my teacher made me move back down...I think I'm fine but...well, it might be the fact I've used the reed for three weeks sweatdrop I agree with me being too soft in the beginning, my teacher tells me that if I really wanted first chair I'd have to play like a soloist, I'm pretty scared of my tone sounding like AHHHHHHH [like how some clarinetist do..not you guys...some in my band...its a obnoxious sound] and I'm very timid and shy so my clarinet reflects me..DX =.=! Stuart was like, "Play like a soloist! Imagine you're at carnegie!" me: O_O! stuart: "don't let your shy side show on your clarinet, show a brave soloistic sound!" me: "thats cheesy stare " stuart: stare

o.o but the sound goes waaah if you don't tongue right? Should I tongue more softly instead? I try watching where I breathe but I have small air capacity [maybe i should start swimming again to increase it?] I've listened to about four recordings of this, I'll listen to more whee

sankyuu~yeah my artic. was pretty muddy DX I have to work a bit on legato tonguing still... sweatdrop I haven't been doing the tonguin exercise my teacher gave me gonk

thanks for the critique!!!!!

gasp! you can sew??
Well, not really...but I'm trying to learn. I'm trying to sew together a purse, but it's hard hand-sewing something that big. (its 12" by 12" on the front and back, but I'm thinking of downsizing it to 9 or 10 inches on both sides.) It's pretty cool to imagine how to put it together in my head. I want to try origami next.
