Indeed... Your abilities are eons beyond my own, then. As is expected.

Ryudo would sit quiet for a few more moments after that, his brain mulling over a few more things. If something as wild and spontaneous as flame could be predicted, even for just a few seconds, then what about the lives of entire beings? It was clear that Maximos placed a strong belief in that the actions of a person ultimately decided their fate, but could that fate be predetermined by just a few actions a person had made over their lifetime? Another question slowly took shape in Ryudo's mind, and after he'd formed it, he would ask.

I've made several rash choices in my life, Mr. Maximos, and I've come to accept the responsibilities of these actions as an unwavering signpost at the end of my road.

But, tell me, Mr. Maximos... What do you see in store for my brother?

It was clear that Ryudo cared about his brother, even if he never truly showed it. Ryudo's first statement said much more that it let on, at least to most people, but to one like Maximos, it would be very clear. Much like the pages on his book. But Maximos would be able to tell that this conversation that was beginning wasn't simply about what Maximos saw ahead in Ryugi's life, but where Ryudo saw Ryugi's life heading.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 09, 2008 3:45 am

Not Eon's.

Maximos said with a slight smile, moving his free hand to scratch the back of his head. Ryudo made him sound so formal and official. Like something older and more powerful than he actually was, or ever would be. The dragon before him was in his thousands, once he entered them Maximos would never leave his hundreds.

I was just both fortunate and unfortunate in my life to be gifted. And cursed. In a great many things.

He adjusted his finger, so that the sweat of the enclosed pages would not ruin the paper or smudge the ink. One of a kind copies and such. The perks of a having someone close to your heart, be close the book industry.

Maximos lingered for a few moments.

His eyes on the flame, the flame in the now not two seconds from now. It really was quite beautiful in its own right. Mesmerizing even. He thought of quiet evenings at Feimurgan, of Lucind. A calm smile slipped onto his features.

Then Ryudo spoke. Again, Maximos listened. His finger slipped from the book as he closed it completely and gave the conversation his full focus. Ryudo had touched on a topic, Maximos had infact been thinking about recently. He could not see the future, and in his mind it belonged to no man but...he had seen the tide, he had seen its patterns and he had his thoughts.

Maximos tone turned solemn. Much quieter, just an octave or two above a whisper. His eyes scanned the floor, taking in all the details, the wood, the rug, the number of specs, dust...but finding no answers.

I see darkness.

He brought his gaze back up the fire.

Your brother is a light, in a world growing blacker by the day. He's done well to keep his light lit for so long...

Maximos shook his head, trying to jingle free the dark thoughts clinging to the back of his skull, hiding from light. Hiding from the possibility of being true.

...but there are those that act to darken this world and I see your brothers light becoming a beacon for the darkness to him...and those he cares for.

He was quiet for a moment. Just a moment, as if letting it all digest.

...Barton was only a taste. And he barely survived, thanks to you.

Mismatched eyes finally shifted to the dragon, from the flame.

...Your bother has a rare kind, warm, pure heart, he will survive. But I know not what he will be. Or at what price.

He adjusted the book again, its pages ruffling slightly. The solemn proclamation at an end. With Ryudo's question answered, Maximos changed his tone a bit, and the subject.

No matter how clear a sign Ryudo, no one forces us to stay on the road. Your brother has hope...but you are no lost cause...unless you wish to be.

Ryudo thought for a moment on the words of Maximos. He knew the sins that he'd committed in his past still weighed heavily on his person. At the time, he'd believed that he was doing the world a service, but in reality, he'd been going against the natural order of things, and had been too blinded by his beliefs to see the truth behind the actions of those individuals so long ago. But his brother had shown him the light...

His light is his best quality Mr. Maximos...

Ryudo knew the troubles that came with one so outwardly light and just as his brother. Darkness strikes hardest at the light, and his brother was no exception.

But it is also his greatest weakness...

Light was a powerful gift. It inspired one to push harder and give it their all, push past their limits to achieve things no one else had ever done before. However, there was a reason there were so few lights left in the world. They glowed brightly, burning away the darkness before going out forever. Ryudo had seen it too many times to count in his past...

Ryudo would look to Maximos before speaking again, probably saying the most words he'd said in the time Maximos had known him.

I know you and my brother are good friends, Mr. Maximos. He trusts you deeply, or he wouldn't have brought you here. What I'm about to tell you is something that nags in the back of my mind each and every day. Every day since the incident at Barton that nearly, and easily would have, claimed his life if I hadn't acted when I did...

Ryudo would sigh, and look into the fire, his thoughts dancing around like the flames in front of him.

My brother would throw away that light he carries in an instant if it meant saving someone he cared for. He wouldn't think twice about it. He would simply do it. All that hope, that beacon of light in this world, would be extinguished without question to save a few people from death...

Ryudo would look to Maximos once more, his red eyes trained on the dark blue ans white eyes of the Reaper sitting across from him. Maximos could read emotions, and he would see that this seeming void of emotion was clearly showing worry, regret, stress, and a firm resolve.

He would not consider that the lives of a couple individuals may not be worth his own sacrifice when he could prevent even larger situations and actions of darkness and evil yet to happen. There are those that are worth that kind of sacrifice, and those that are not. I beleive my brother is not. I believe his goodness and his light are meant for great things in the future...

Ryudo's whole body would turn to face Maximos now, he could see he was openly questioning him, asking him...

Darkness is indeed stirring in this world Mr. Maximos. Darkness that should not be felt is sensed. If one like myself can sense this...ominous presence, I am certain you can as well. Mark my words... There will soon come a time when my brother will have to make a decision of self sacrifice, where his light will be extinguished forever against the blackness of evil. When that time comes, I would ask you to look deep inside yourself, and ask yourself if you should step in and deny that to him...

Consider it a warning, Mr. Maximos, of things to come...

Maximos would be able to sense that this situation had clearly eaten at Ryudo over a long period of time. His actions seemed unsure, but Maximos knew that his intentions were pure in the end. What exactly was he getting at? Were his concerns warranted? Maximos probably wasn't the type to ponder such things, but Ryudo apparently had some questions to which he seeked the answers to, and a waring for Maximos as well.

Maximos listened in silence.

Not only was it polite, but it was proper. Ryudo was several centuries older than Maximos and very clearly spent the majority of his time in thought. What foreshadowing and insights he gave were more valuable than the desire speak at the moment.

It was clear to see that this dark dragon cared very much for his brother. The solemn overture of his speech when he mentioned his brothers near death experience was proof of that.

He saw Ryugi's weakness.

Maximos wondered if perhaps he didnt believe Maximos could help protect him from it. No infact it seemed by his tone alone that the dragon was convinced Maximos may just play pivot part in deciding where Ryugi falls from the knifes edge he would find himself upon. Would it be back into the comforting graces of the light, or be forever swallowed by black and lost.

Either way, Ryudo's words had weight. And one could see them balancing on Maximos' shoulders, he looked serious though not angry. And looked forward meeting Ryudo's before sliding down to the ground before him. To save a life? Or let it fall? That was his life nowadays, letting people fall. Had he the heart to be a hero again? It took him a moment of silence to think. In social situations like this there is usually an unspoken albeit felt time in which a response may be delivered before the pause becomes awkward. Maximos seemed to push the silence that very boundary, and spoke just short of it.

I fear...that should your brother feel such darkness...truly, honestly...he shall never be as bright again, but rather stained grey by the truth of this world. No one can stop that.

His head lifted slowly, and spoke honestly.

As for myself...I...I dare do all that may become a man; who dares do more, is none.

Your words are as deep as your eye, Mr. Maximos. You're incredibly wise for your age. I'm not positive how old you really are, but you're wise beyond your years, whatever they may be.

Ryudo seemed satisfied with the answer Maximos had given him. He knew Maximos would do what he felt needed to be done, if he felt it needed to be done at all. In that vein, the both of them were terribly similar. There may come a time when Ryudo himself might show his own light in the darkness, but who knew, really, what was set in the stones ahead? As Maximos had said earlier, Ryudo was not a lost cause.

The both of them had sinned terrible sins in their lives. Unbeknownst to either of them, except possibly Maximos with his powerful gift of sight beyond sight, both had killed dozens of people. Innocents slain for whatever cause they deemed necessary. For the sheer, demented pleasure of it, or because one believed people were going to pay for their filth and past sins. Both of these dark warriors had done terrible, nearly unforgivable acts of ruthless violence and killing, and at one point or another, had enjoyed it.

Ryugi had saved Ryudo from his path to self destruction not long ago, and he sat before Maximos as a testament to what good friends can do for another. To Ryugi, saving his brother and making him see that his way was not the only way to look at the world, was a natural thing. He did what he believed was right and just. But, in Ryudo's mind, the world was supposed to be in a balance. His ruthless acts of violence, no matter how "right" they had seemed at the time, haunted him, and in his mind left the world a darker and more evil place than it should have been. The flows of energy had been cast in the favor of darkness by his actions, and in Ryudo's mind, it was his job to replace the natural order of balance in the world by cleansing the world of the darkness and evils that threatened to tip the scale further in the direction of the shadows.

His brother and his light were only part of the equation, and Ryudo still felt he had a gap to fill before all was right with the world once more...

This was his burden in life.

Much the same as the mighty Titan Atlas carried the world on his shoulders, thus did Ryudo carry the weight of his past sins, and seek to rebalance the tipped scale once more to its proper neutral state. The natural order of the world was terribly important to Ryudo, and always had been. If evil rose to swat out the light, the evil had to be balanced by an equal force of light. If there was too much light in the world, an evil rose to meet it. Such was the natural order. Light begot darkness, darkness begot light, and so on and so forth, forever and unto eternity. Ryudo's wish to balance the scale of his life was to him, a part of restoring the balance of the universe to its neutral state. To wash the blood from his seemingly ever-stained hands... It was the only logical choice...

I can see why my brother respects and admires you, Mr. Maximos. He may see you as a teacher of sorts, but perhaps you may learn something from him as well...

Ryudo paused for a moment, as if deep in thought, before offering Maximos a pour from the teapot.

More tea?

"Your words are as deep as your eye, Mr. Maximos. You're incredibly wise for your age. I'm not positive how old you really are, but you're wise beyond your years, whatever they may be."

A compliment most gracious. Maximos wasnt entirely sure he deserved it. If anything Maximos considered himself well read.

Thank you, you are entirely too kind Mr.Kazamaru.

He said with the same kindness Ryudo showed him. In the solemn nature of the talk, a brigh Ryudo was deep in thought, very deep he could tell. The mans aura, how mannerisms all smacked of the same emotional conflict Maximos himself endured day in and out.

Was he a monster? Was he beyond redemption? Beyond the light? Everyday when he sat before the sink he wondered if he could ever clean the blood from his face and hands. Some days, lost in memory he scrubbed for hours. Was that cold emotionless face he wore the true Maximos? Had he worn a mask so long he forgot what was within, or back what was without?

No, he needed to magic eye to understand the turmoil that had eaten at Ryudo. Nor did he want one. Maximos could not see thoughts, though at a time he searched for a means to. He had even found a teacher, but stopped himself short, wondering that if he was so shocked by the dark things he saw in the souls of those that seemed most pure, would the secrets of the mind not be that much worse?

The shadow dragon was bathed in black and red, circling around a spec of white. A drop of purity drowning and yet floating in a sea of guilt, and darkness. What he, what Maximos, would likely give to just be able to return...white was untouchable but maybe grey. Maybe a stained, mussy, middle ground. But they did what they must, didnt they? Thats what let Maximos sleep some nights, and what kept him up all through others.

Good intentions truly do pave the road to hell. And both men had been engulfed by their inner demons. And yet, there was hope. Maximos had found it in his family, and clung to them. Perhaps Ryudo would find his light somewhere as well. Perhaps he already had?

"I can see why my brother respects and admires you, Mr. Maximos. He may see you as a teacher of sorts, but perhaps you may learn something from him as well..."

Maximos smirked. It said, "I have" silently. And he had, every time he saw Ryugi he was reminded of a past he had begun to forget. A memory of a way he once was, a purity the world was mostly without. Maximos regarded Ryugi in the way one might regard a star. A bright beautiful thing cast against a night sky. It gives light, in a naive sort of way it gives hope, but...no matter how high he reach his arm he would never actually be a star, or even touch anything but that eternal night. Still it was comforting to know someone had.

Such depressing imagery, he could really use some...

"More tea?"

Yes please!

He returned, lifting his cup with both hands and presented it to Ryudo and the teapot with a bright, ear to ear smile.

Ryudo poured the teacup full, and then set the pot back on the table. Ryudo sipped a bit of his own tea once more, still not having finished his own. A silence rose up between the two shadows once more, like the creeping calm fog of an early morning. Silence happened for many reasons in the world. Sometimes it was because one knew not what to say. And other times, it was because one knew all had already been said. This silence seemed to signify the end of the conversation between the two men.

It was an odd, pondering type of silence. It made a person think and reflect on what had just been said. It was calming, gratifying even. But the silence wasn't the strangest thing. It was mystifying that two men who had never met before in their lives could somehow be so similar, and yet so different at the same time. One had been a hero, turned villain, and turned completely neutral in the process, while striving to be the way he used to be deep inside his heart. The other had been neutral, turned villain, and now struggled with the concept that he could be capable of some heroic act of self sacrifice.

Both men still had their inner demons to fight and deal with, some more vibrant and dangerous than others, but over the whole sum of things it could be said that they both understood one another. Their depth, their inner turmoil, the power struggle raging deep inside them that sometimes threatened to cast them into a pit of darkness so deep and without bottom that nothing would be able to touch them again. And yet, at the same time attempted to catapult them high up into the brightness of the stars to mingle among them as the greatest of light in the world.

Both sides of this everlasting battle raged and clashed within these two stoic men, that quietly sipped their tea in a chilly little mountain village.

However, the silence was soon broken by the faint crunch crunch crunch of snow by heavy boots, the clinking sound of a door handle being turned and opened as Cruxis Saint returned from wherever he and Ryugi had gone. Except, he was minus Ryugi. He moved himself inside, closing the door, and preventing anymore gusts of chilly wind from seeming into the warm house. The door closed with a sturdy sound as Cruxis turned to face the two men once more, and spoke.

It would seem that Ryugi will not be joining us until tomorrow. His errand has turned out to be more complicated than he originally thought.

He paused for a moment, a yawn coming to his mouth. His face contorted a bit as he did his best to stifle the action and cover his mouth, before he continued.

Hmm, I must be sleepier than I imagined. I'm afraid I must retire for the night. Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

He chuckled a bit and grinned before moving and addressing Maximos instead of both shadowy men.

Oh! I nearly forgot. You can find yourself a room upstairs, Mr. Maximos. My room is at the end of the hallway if you need anything. The other two rooms are guest rooms. I hope they'll be to your liking.

Good night to you both.

Cruxis would bow and move upstairs, retiring for the night. Ryudo would give a curt nod as he took another sip of tea, his own way of parting, and continued to sip his tea for the time being.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 06, 2008 12:45 am

It was most definitely a quiet moment. Maximos leaned back in his seat letting the weight of the warning and words shared pour over him as he calmly sipped at his tea.

He needed to digest this. He needed to ask him who and what he was and would be when the time came. How much value did he put on Ryugi? No, how much value did he put on any of his friends? On anyone close to him?

It was all very heavy, and it was a weight he silently carried, as the warm liquid trickled through him.

The dragon before him no awkwardness any long, no uncomfortability. In a dark way they were like a kin, an unspoken, wordless tie both likely felt. No more words were spoken, but many things were said, an understanding was reached. A connection of sorts was made. Both had seen the absolute bottom, both had seen the light. Both felt its presence, and its distance and both warred with kept them from reaching it daily. Was it that misery loves company? Or was it that knowing one is not alone in there struggle eased the misery of it all? Maximos smiled gently. His posture as a whole seemed to relax a great deal. Ryudo held many secrets now, and yet at the same time none.

He'd gained a new friend. He'd gained a new understanding of what is and was to come.

This quest was proving more fruitful than he could have imagined it ever would have. Then came they all to familiar march of boots in snow. Max, cocked and eyebrow, almost right off he could tell something was wrong with the rhythm. Crunch, crunch, instead of crunch crunch, crunch crunch. It meant there was only one. His eyes and concerned face were already on the door as it opened, though without any glow.

It would seem that Ryugi will not be joining us until tomorrow. His errand has turned out to be more complicated than he originally thought.

He let Mr. Saint speak, before concern showed on his face. Ryugi was a fighter, a heroic type of individual. If he was caught in some conflict and needed a sword by his side...

He let out a deep breath in a catch between a sigh of relief, and a resistant huff. He wanted to to do something to help, but if there was danger he knew Mr. Saint wouldnt have left Ryugi alone.

Thank you Mr. Saint. I hope everything is well.

Maximos said, nodding graciously and taking another sip from his mug. He was a creature of the night, a shadow, going to be early from him had all the displeasure someone might have knowing they'd overslept and half the day was gone. No, he would stay up a bit longer until the night wasnt quite so young, until his mind had time to digest. Or more directly, until he finished this cup.

At which point, he would stand, hoisting his bag over his shoulder.

Mr. Ryudo Kazamaru...

He would said, formally extending his right hand.

...It was an honor, and a pleasure.

What more really need be said? For Maximos formality was not strict or distant, it was the most direct and pure method of expressing a sentiment. He'd hold the handshake long enough to meet the dragons eyes for the first time since there meet, then he would bow and be off toward his room.

There were two, so he assumed they were nearly identical. He chose the one with the best view of the snowfall and the town. He'd shut the door, lay his bag beside his bed, change into a his sleeping attire, and lay in bed for one last chapter before morning.

Ryudo would meet Maximos' eyes, something he rarely did to anyone. But this man had earned his respect, and his understanding. Ryudo's handshake was firm, but relatively brief. Not out of disrespect, merely out of a dislike of strong physical contact. He just wasn't a touchy feely type of person.

Likewise, Mr. Maximos. Sleep well.

And with that, the shadows would go their separate ways. Maximos would retire to his room for the night while Ryudo would sit by the fire, staring into it, deep in thought, sipping his tea and wondering at the deep truths that lay hidden within one's life.

* * * * * * * * * *

Time marches onward, and with it, life does as well. The world kept turning, and after a time, the night slowly flowed into day, the sun traded spots in the sky with the moon, and the world awoke to a calm new day. Soft and quiet calm filled the sleepy snowy town, and the soft smell of fireplaces cooking meals wafted through it, the smoky stacks of chimneys telling where the meals were being served. The peaceful morning began softly...

...with a crashing sound, a pulse of dark energy, and a scream from a very upset dragon.

GWAAHH!! That wasn't supposed to happen!!

Those attuned to shadowy energies would feel the pulse like a shock to their systems. What the hell could it be?!
PostPosted: Sun Apr 06, 2008 2:25 am

Maximos dreamed of sugar pops and marshmellows. Yes, literally. He was dancing in his silk pajama's through a field with candy bar bricks, plants with flower heads, sugar pops on the side of the road, and marshmallows in the sky. And a peaceful "La, la" song filling the area.

And then it began to rain.

The sky blackened. Worms crawled from the candy bars, the rain revealed itself to be blood, ruining the sugar pops forever. And "La, la" became "Aaah! Aaah!!". He saw creatures slip from people shadows overtaking them, and attacking them. He saw monsters tear the field. And in the distance he saw a single dark figure playing in the shadows, his laughter booming in the distance.

He knew its name. He was about to say it when he was awoke...

Ryugi Kazamaru
...with a crashing sound, a pulse of dark energy, and a scream from a very upset dragon.

GWAAHH!! That wasn't supposed to happen!!

Nocturne!

He shouted. Reality and dream still fused by the early morning haze. He hadnt time to get dressed something snazzy or classy, instead he scooted a handful of small stones off the table. Then bolted out the door, a snap filling the air as his jet black longsword was summoned, and he nearly fell into the opposite room, and rushed down the stairs. He had a baggy pair silk pants, and a matching shirt, both were pinstriped with navy blue lines. His hair was spiked, though in several different directions, and in the grogginess, his right eye hadnt even activated giving him extremely poor depth perception. The eye flickered, like a broken truck stop sign.

R-ryugi?! Where are you!?

He would in Cruxis' living room. But given a moment or two he would start following the direction of that pulse. Even if it meant running outside.

Ma-Max!? Over here!! You need to stop this thing!!

It wouldn't take a genius to figure out that Ryugi was outside, and in motion. And what a quick motion it was too. As Maximos would surely bolt outside, he would see a very troubling sight indeed. Ryugi was being chased...

A dark silhouette followed behind him as he rounded a bend, most of his clothes from his upper torso wrapped around his waist, his body drenched in sweat, dirt and grime as he ran through the snow. The shadowy form followed after him, its eyes glowing a dark violet as it gave chase, a strange sword in hand...
PostPosted: Sun Apr 06, 2008 2:49 am

That was all the call to arms he needed!

He kneeled low, bracing himself, held his sword with both hands in front of him and flew! Four feet forward...Feeling really dumb, because his boots were inside, beside the bed.

And so he ran!

And all the while cursed his islander blood.

He was no slouch on his feet after all. Even if he couldnt feel his toes, he ran directly at the very mussed up Ryugi. His jet black sword carved a line in the snow beside him, and as he passed the dragon. His pants from the knee down now soaked and tapered to his legs. His fingers were already starting to feel a bit numb. But he immediately brought his sword diagonally up, aiming to slash the shadowy thing directly across the midsection!

Ryugi spun around, skidding in the snow as Maximos shot forward, his sword speeding up to meet the midsection of the shadowy foe. He didn't have Ragnarok with him as he'd left it behind as Cruxis' home, and now he was watching his friend fight this strange ... thing!

* * *

The "thing" was as fast as it was creepy. The sword it was holding shot across its midsection, catching and blocking the strike from the longsword with one hand, a pulse of shadowy energy erupting from the sword as it met the weapon, as the other arm shot back, and then would power forward towards Maximos' chest area.

It thing's violet eyes glowed brighter as it made its first move towards Maximos. What the heck WAS it?!
PostPosted: Sun Apr 06, 2008 4:54 am

Ahh the first moments of combat! Clashing swords, steel protest, metal meeting metal, and all sorts of other beautiful analogies that were entirely lost to the half frozen, half asleep shadow.

Right now, despite half opened eyes he heard the resounding clash of blades, and cocked an eyebrow. This immediately followed by the warbling pull of shadow essence. His eyes opened wide. It was just enough time for him to say...

User Image
Huh?

And be the immediate victim to a vicious impact across the chest area. His teeth gritted, his face cringed, but he kept his two feet solid to the ground. A feat far easier to perform with numb feet, and while skidding back along something as smooth and forgiving as snow.

Maximos came to a stop just a foot or so ahead of Ryugi, his body lurched forward with both hands clutching the hilt of his sword, just in case the thing decided to advance. His eyes were open wide now, and he was more than awake enough to shout back.

What the heck is THAT?!

THAT, is supposed to be for you...

Ryugi grinned sheepishly and would have visibly sweat-dropped, if it was humanly, or realistically, possible. The then snapped his head back as he felt another pulse of shadowy energy from the thing.

Watch out!!

Ryugi would dive off to the side as a strong flowing current of shadowy energy coiled and spun through the air towards Maximos' position, the figure completely deforming as if it WAS the dark energy surge, the weapon being pulled behind it by an arm and legs that almost seemed like a second thought. Something just wasn't normal about this being...
