Andarien's face flushed and his chin quivered as he tried to hold back tears again.
"She kept telling me I should wait!" he told her angrily. "That I shouldn't even try here! Because it wouldn't be any good because no one else has one anyways! Well who cares if no one else has one? And I shouldn't make one now just because of that? And just because the parts are already at Caras Galadhon, I can't see if they can make them here, too? I thought it was good to try things! What else am I supposed to do here? I've made all my other projects and I don't want to just have lessons all the time and I don't have any friends that I can play with-"
He broke off mid-sentence and burst into tears. Ponydash nuzzled Andarien's arm, and Eon leaned against his leg to comfort him.

"Andarien...." Lin sighed as she pulled him into a hug, "Now, I want you to listen to me. Are you listening?"
She waited until she got an okay before continuing on.
"First, of all, Miyuki asked you why you weren't going to wait until you got to Caras Galadhon. She never actually said wait, she even told you that as long as it was durable, agreed it would be okay too."
Lin had a funny feeling she knew why Miyuki was saying what she was saying, but she didn't want to put words into her daughter's mouth so didn't add as to why Miyuki probably said those things.
"And you know... I don't think Miyuki knew you wanted to make a watch just for yourself," Lin told him softly but plainly.

Andarien looked up at Lin, very confused. "Is she stupid?" he asked, not meaning to be insulting but wondering very honestly if that were the case. "Why else would I want one? I told her it was for me, so I can see what time it is and stuff, and that way if I'm gonna go off on my own I know what time to be back! But she made it sound like that was a stupid idea!"
He sniffled. "And why should I wait? Why is she telling me how to make my watch?"

Lin winced at that, she understood he didn't mean it to be insulting but it was clear that he still had tact issues.
Her father would be laughing his a** off if her heard.
"Actually," Lin coughed, "I overheard the both of you..."
Not that it was hard, the shop was small and he had been getting a bit frustrated near the end which Miyuki obviously didn't hear. She wondered if both her children had issues catching social cues.
"And when she asked why you weren't going to wait, you told her it was so you could look around without your ada and I watching you, because you would know what time to meet back with us. You never stated right out that it was just for you, not so your ada and I wouldn't worry about you."

"Well who else would I give it to if I'm going to use it to know what time it is?" Andarien exploded. He wasn't entirely angry, but he was very frustrated. "Come on, that's just obvious! And all my other projects were for me, so why wouldn't the watch be for me? Doesn't she think?"
He clenched his fists tightly, trying to control himself.

There were so many ways to reply to that. Lin ran her hand through her hair and wonder if maybe she should have just scolded him for arguing in public instead.
However he wasn't going to learn anything if they didn't n** this in the bud. Honestly, they sent him for etiquette lessons, not lessons in how to socially interact with people without pissing others off.
Believe it or not it was two different things to a certain degree, one was activity taught, the other one assumed one learned after a while.
She mentally bit her tongue on what she wanted to say, that is to Andarien it seemed like everything that was obvious to him was obvious and things he didn't agree with were stupid.
"She thinks, she just doesn't think like you," Lin finally settled on that reply instead, "We all do not think the same, what is obvious to one person, isn't obvious to another. That being said, Miyuki should have told you why she was concerned about you using glass gears out right, as well as told you how much she was hurt by your comments at her instead of yelling back at you."

Andarien blinked at Lin. "Hurt?" he repeated anxiously, tears brimming in his eyes again. "I hurt her?"
He hadn't meant to do that. But of course, he had been so preoccupied with answering her questions, despite not understanding them, that he hadn't really noticed exactly what he was saying.

"Oh Andarien..." Lin pulled him into a hug.
Really she decided it was a curse to be able to speak so well and then be so young, and then turn around and have amazing understanding.
"You both hurt each other really," she murmured, "but yes. She was hurt because you accused her of thinking you weren't important. You see, just like she didn't know you wanted the watch for yourself, you don't really know why she questioned you about glass gears. I bet if you asked her why she was unsure about them, it has nothing to do with thinking you're unimportant."

Andarien hugged Lin tightly and cried against her chest, soaking whatever clothing she had on. He felt terrible that he had hurt Miyuki - but he was also still frustrated that he still didn't understand why she had wanted him to put off the building of the watch.
It took a few minutes, but finally, Andarien cried himself out, and then he just sat there in Lin's lap, snuggling up against her and sniffling a bit.

Lin waited until he had cried himself out and was starting to think Earendil had the easier task of the two. Miyuki should be old enough to understand what she did was wrong and understand fully that she could have handle it better.
At least she hoped so, because if two of them needed more in-depth social lessons she wasn't sure what she was going to do.
Stroking his hair and balancing herself, Lin knew she was going to be sore when she stood up straight. Crouching down while holding Andarien was like playing invisible chair for a long period of time.
"I understand you're frustrated," Lin finally replied, "People say things and it doesn't seem to make sense or have any real reason, but... being angry makes it worse. Being angry, yelling, accusing just makes you and those around you feel bad."
She looked at him, and tried to catch his gaze.
"So the next time you don't understand, try asking calmly for them to make themselves clearer, to give their reasons. It's okay to debate, but a full out argument doesn't help anyone. If you think you're going to yell, sometimes it is best to excuse yourself and walk away."

"I didn't yell," Andarien frowned. "I didn't. Cos you're not supposed to yell at people, it's rude. And I didn't yell."
He kept his eyes on the ground. He didn't want to look Lin in the eye. He had a feeling that if he did, he might get angry again. He hadn't yelled, he knew he hadn't. So it wasn't fair of her to lecture him for it, especially on top of everything else.

"Very well," Lin wasn't going to argue logistics to him, even though she was pretty sure he had raised his voice, "You both lost your temper and had an argument in public."
Really, it must be something that runs in the family, adoption aside. Lin knew she had a temper, her father had one hell of a temper and her mother who had the longest fuse she had ever known had a scary temper under certain circumstances.

Andarien nodded, still looking guiltily at the ground. He didn't know what to say. He felt terrible, the worst he'd ever felt. But he was out of tears. And energy. He just didn't have much response left in him.
Nearby, Eon began to pace back and forth, peering at Andarien every few steps.

If he was smaller, she would have carried him, but unfortunately he was too large for big for that.
"Come now," Lin murmured, "You made a mistake, we all do."
She kissed him on the cheek.
"As long as you learn from that mistake that is all I can ask, and nothing is permanently damaged. Let's head back okay?"

Andarien slid off her lap and stood up again. "Back where?" he asked quietly. "The castle?"
It wouldn't surprise him. He and Miyuki had really loused up the trip to the town. He didn't want to go: he liked talking to the shop owners here. But at the same time, he knew that if he spoke to the shop owners again today, he wouldn't enjoy it because of what had happened. He would feel guilty talking to them.
