Eccentric Iconoclast I wouldn't actually call them verbs done to oneself; they aren't always really done to oneself. It's just that they're not done to anything other than oneself. Reflexives are, as far as I can tell, a rather irregular subset of intransitives. smile That's right, I guess, 'cause you can say something like 'irse' which is like "to go away," but in a more permanent sense. You can also say something like "me opero," which doesn't mean, "I operate upon myself," but, "I'm having an operation done upon myself," somewhat. That's what I hear from my Spanish teacher.

In spanish we have many ways to conjugate verbs that for foregeins might sound odd, like those you've said: "despertarse" - to wake up; "me opero" - to have a surgery done upon...
And sometimes it becomes hard to explain in a sensible way why we speak like that. It's awfully funny! lol

Nice anecdote: I'm form Holland, but we've had some family come over from Brazil for half a year. Since then I'm not able to say 'What?' anymore, I always say '¿Que?'.
Now, here's the nice anecdote: Last summer, we we're on vacation on the island of Tenerife. Me and my cousin we're in a store and the girl who worked there asked me something in Spanish, ofcourse, I didn't know what she said, but I said '¿Que?', and she started over eek . I said I didn't speak Spanish, walked away and almost wet my pants.
That was it. Have fun smile

Tengo una problema:
When I'm writing/typing in Spanish, or I can see what I'm about to say I can do fine but when I have to talk to people other than my sister I can't just freely chat off the top of my head. I have to fish for words and remember what I'm saying and how to say it. I also have trouble rolling r's in a regular conversation when I'm talking to people other than my sister. I CAN roll r's and I have always been able to do it but when I speak in class it always comes out sounding like a d.
How can a visual person like me speak without sounding like an idiot? And what about the whole r thing? does anyone have issues with that?

I''l just say "with practice" sweatdrop sorry for not being useful... but that happens to me in french, and when I was at france last year, after a week, I started thinking in french. That's what my french teacher told me "start thinking in the language you are speaking, don't think in your own language and translate"

My father told me that if you speake spanish and stay in Galicia for.. like 3 days, you start to understand galician pretty well

Eh, on the website I found information on it, it said it's a dialect of Spanish but I kind of merely skimmed the article so I was obviously wrong and mis-read. redface
