"Yes ada," Miyuki replied with equal softness.

If she was being pulled aside, it was because she did something wrong and it could be any number of things. She was that at that age after all, you tended to say one thing and then once you said it you wondered if you can have done it better and you second question yourself like no tomorrow.

She didn't even notice her mother slip out and looked both ways down the street as if to consider which way Andarien might have gone off to.

Earendil motioned for her to join him so that they would be out of the way of anyone walking down the street.

"We need to have a talk," he told her gently. "It's something we should have done a long time ago. I had thought those etiquette lessons you took might have touched on this, but I suppose I ought to have made sure of it."

He rubbed his eyes with his thumb and forefinger as he thought through what needed to be said. He wanted to do this right.

"I think," he said slowly, "that the first thing I need to do is remind you ... your brother is much younger than he looks. He's very smart, yes, smarter than most children his age ... and it makes it easy to forget that he really is still a young child. He doesn't process things the way that we do. And he's very sensitive. You know what I mean?"

Miyuki paused, her first thought was that she was afraid he was going to say that. Yes, her etiquette lessons had covered it and she, in her attempts to be helpful to him had forgotten that. She really shouldn't have said anything she thought.

The second thought was about his age, when she thought about it yes there was the fact he was very sensitive when it came to comments to him. She nodded at this after a moment, but didn't say anything.

Lin, finally realizing he wasn't in sight, began to ask around if anyone had seen a little boy with Andarien's description. It wasn't really hard, there were normally any blondes around and his clothes made him stand out.

Earendil waited until Miyuki nodded at him. He didn't want to rush her through this. Then he went on.

"That being said, your reaction was not much better than his," he told her quietly. "I know what he said was not pleasant and not fair, but snapping back at him was no more mature or responsible than the way he was speaking to you. We've spoken to you about your temper before, Miyuki, but I had thought that you were doing much better in controlling it. But it's more than just controlling yourself, too ..."

He sighed. "I know it doesn't mean much to you, but you are a princess, whether you like it or not, and even if we aren't taking our places in the court in the Southland, we are representatives of the Aldrich family, as well as our nation. Our entire nation will be judged by our actions. We have rank, riches and privilege, but with that - and because of it - we have greater responsibility than most people. Siblings argue, everyone knows it ... but in public ..."

He shook his head sadly. "It's disgraceful. For yourselves, for your mother and I, and for all of us. I'm not angry, Miyuki, but I am very disappointed. Forgive me if it was wrong of me, but ... I expected more from you."

All the people Lin spoke to told her the same thing: they had seen a boy a few minutes previous with two creatures following after him, running down the street away from the shop, away from the direction the group had first come from. They couldn't say how far he had gone, only that he had gone that direction.

A small absent part of her brain spoke that only the last exchange had been an argument, but it was still an argument so that counted for something. Really they wouldn't be having this conversation if she hadn't snapped back at Andarien.

"No, it's not," she replied, "Wrong to expect me to have a level head. I know Andarien is younger than how he talks. I know he's overly sensitive and I shouldn't have snapped back at him. Not even in private like that."

She paused and her fist clenched because really it hadn't been that long since she was younger. Okay so it had been several months but her memories were still clear. Clear of her own envy which she had tried her best to stamp out as a child, which was why Andarien's words hit such a sore point.

"I was wrong for doing that," she added, "But it doesn't make it hurt any less."

She wouldn't deny that, it didn't matter if she was wrong. What Andarien said hurt because she knew there was a good chance that Andarien would believe his own words. He didn't say things if he didn't actually think it as far as she knew. Not only that but it reminded Miyuki of her younger days when she felt that Andarien was being selfish for the tempers he threw even though their parents were going out of their way to get all these things for them. It was something she never admitted to anyone growing up because she knew it was unreasonable (he didn't have much back then).

And to be honest, there was a bit of truth to what she said to Andarien. She wasn't sure if she should ask him anything ever again, because to be fair she didn't know what set him off to begin with. She had just been pointing out his reason for wanting a working pocket watch so their parents wouldn't worry because he would always know what time to meet them wouldn't work. If he said he just wanted a pocket watch because he wanted one that worked she would have not said a thing.

He only said, that if he could make the parts now why wait? He never said out right he wanted the watch right now, and that he wanted it for himself.

Lin sighed as she heard that, at least she had a direction. Deciding it was faster to fly, she took a running leap. She could find him faster too, a blonde among fiery redheads.

Earendil put one hand on Miyuki's shoulder and drew her close so he could put one arm around her shoulders.

"I'm not saying he was in the right for saying what he did either," he told her softly. "Nor am I using his age as an excuse for it. But we are all hurt sometimes. It's part of life. But we do have to learn how to deal with it properly. There are times for public displays, but they are very rare. And it should never be about something personal. Everything we do affects those around us, and it is our responsibility to make sure that what we do ourselves affects those around us positively."

He gave her a light squeeze. "All right?"

Andarien was nowhere on that street anymore, but some elves near an intersection pointed Lin down another street, and at the far end of the street were two pokemon following after a blond-haired boy who was walking very quickly away.

"Hai," Miyuki nodded.

She of course knew this, her ada had been clear and really she should told Andarien quietly that, it was unfair and then cleared it up with him. If the world was perfect that was.

Lin was glad to see him, because at least she could run the rest of the way. He still wasn't yet taller than her and she was a good runner (one had to be when you use to be only inches tall). She thanked those who helped her ran after him calling out his name.

Andarien didn't hear Lin, but Eon's ear twitched and he looked over his shoulder to see who was calling. When he spotted Lin, he stepped in front of Andarien to stop him.

Andarien looked dully down at Eon. "What?" he muttered darkly.

Eon pressed his ears back, and Andarien sighed. "Sorry. It's not your fault."

"Andarien!" Lin was so grateful that Eon stopped him.

Otherwise she would have kept chasing him until she managed to grab the boy. Perhaps it hadn't been a good idea to let him work off some steam, because it was clear he was just going to walk away.

This time Andarien heard Lin, since he wasn't preoccupied by his own thoughts, and he turned to look at her. His goggles had been pushed up to his forehead and his eyelashes were wet and sticking to each other.

"Hi, Nana," he said quietly. Eon sat next to him, and Ponydash trotted up beside him on the other side, and Andarien put one hand on Ponydash's shoulder and stroked it softly.

"Hey...." Lin murmured in turn as she put a hand on his shoulder, "Want to talk about it?"

No sense in making it worse, she knew how sensitive he was.

Andarien scuffed his foot against the ground. "Talk about what?" he asked quietly. "How I shouldn't try do something now because it will be easier later?"

He sniffled and rubbed his nose with one fist. "I never get to do anything."

"Andarien...." Lin crouched down so she could be talking to him face to face, "I want to talk about the argument you and Miyuki had."

At least he wasn't shutting her out, he use to when he was a stage younger, though she supposed lessons were different than having a minute long yelling match with one's sister.

Andarien sniffed again and rubbed the tears from his eyes. "Why doesn't she want me to make a watch?" he asked, his voice cracking. "She has all kinds of friends that she can do stuff with but I don't so why can't I just fix my watch and make it work right?"

He couldn't see past the comments she'd made to the intentions behind them, and it meant that he just didn't understand why she'd been questioning him.

"Did she actually say she didn't want you to make a watch?" Lin asked softly.

Of course she had heard the conversation, it had started innocently enough, but Miyuki obviously didn't know how to talk to someone much younger than herself. Then again, Lin knew she wasn't much better, she felt like she was walking on eggshells.
