Naomi had puzzled over the menu for several minutes, no less confused than when she started, when the door opened and a man entered the cafe. Uneasy in the alien place, her attention immediately turned to the stranger. Although not certain, she thought she saw a flicker of uncertainty cross his face before settling into a calm mask. It looked like she wasn't the only one who came here unexpectedly.

Her right hand found its way to twiddle with her braid, the one habit she hadn't broken to hide her unease. The man looked to be her age, perhaps a little older, wearing clothes as alien to her as that of the cafe staff. After watching him take a seat not too far from her, her lips pressed into a line as she made her decision. Although some information could be gleaned by observation, sometimes one simply had to make the leap and speak with others to understand more.

She stood, menu in hand, and took a few steps toward him. "Excuse me." She held the menu out towards him, gesturing towards a particular item. "Do you know what-" she had to glance at the menu to remind herself of the unfamiliar word- "what coffee is?"

The man inclines his head politely as the woman in strange clothing approaches him. "It's a hot drink that many people use to keep themselves awake. I don't drink it myself, personally, though I believe the taste is quite earthy," he explains, his tone as polite as his body language. He offers her a wry, close-lipped smile and leans back slightly in his seat to better look up at her from his sitting position.

Naomi

The man was polite to a stranger approaching him, she'd give him that. In fact, he was much more polite than she would have been to a stranger approaching her. She bobbed her head in gratitude. "I've never heard of it before. Thank you for the explanation." She turned to leave the man alone, as his guarded expression seemed to indicate he wanted, but turned back after a moment's thought. "I'll bother you with only one other question. Do you know what this place is? I seem to have found myself here without meaning to." Her head tilted with the inquiry, green eyes filled with a mixture of apprehension and curiosity.

"I confess, I'm in a similar situation myself," the man says softly. "This certainly was not where I had intended to be." He shrugs his shoulders briefly. "It's clear that this is a place that serves food and drink. I would also wager that they are used to seeing a variety of strangers here, since they don't seem to be paying either of us much mind, despite the fact our clothes are as different from theirs as they are from each other." Extending a gloved hand, he adds, "My name is Erryl, by the way."

Naomi

The man's admission of being similarly confused to be here did not surprise her. The more she looked around, the more unusual the place seemed, especially the staff's casual attitude towards such strangely attired customers as he had pointed out. She shook his offered hand at his introduction. "I'm Naomi."

Taking his self-introduction as an invitation, Naomi took a nearby seat after a beat of hesitation. Isolating herself would do her no good in this situation. Perhaps she could learn something if she spoke with the strange patron. Besides, his gray eyes and brown hair reminded her in some ways of her father. Though she knew he couldn't have been related to her father in any way, it brought a small measure of comfort to her in the strange cafe to gaze at gray eyes so like her father's.

She stared at her hands for several moments before glancing back up at Erryl. She began to speak, then second-guessed herself. Her gaze fell back to her hands and her right hand found her braid once again.

Erryl

Erryl's grip is firm, but not crushing, and he shakes the hand with practiced ease. Releasing his grasp, he adjusts his position to appear welcoming in general.

"A pleasure," he says, and though it sounds like just a polite statement, there's a degree of sincerity to it, as though to say that he is pleased to meet her, though perhaps not to the extent of bringing actual pleasure. After all, they had just met. "If there is something on your mind, feel free to speak it. Or, at least, don't worry too much about offending me. There are few things I take exception to these days and I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you are unlikely to do any of them." There's the faintest hint of amusement in his tone, though this amusement does not appear to be at Naomi's expense.

Naomi

Naomi shook the uncertainty from her mind. This was an opportunity she shouldn't waste. Her green gaze rose once more to briefly meet Erryl's, accompanied by a small smile, before roaming the cafe to spot the waitress. The eye contact was all it took for the waitress to bustle over with a smile on her face. "What can I get you two?"

Naomi gestured to the menu. "I'd like to try coffee, please." She glanced at Erryl. "Would you like anything?" She set her hands in her lap to settle her nerves. Being in such a strange situation meant being alert to her surroundings, especially without her usual companion Eamon. Eamon's absence strained her nerves more than anything else.

~ Erryl ~

"Not at present, thank you; I ate before I came here," Erryl answers, his lips twitching slightly. It may have been a trick of the light, but his eyes seemed to darken for a moment as he spoke. Leaning one elbow on the table before him, Erryl smiles faintly, though somehow it doesn't entirely reach his eyes. "So, Naomi, what sort of land do you come from?" he inquires politely, as though this sort of conversation was usual for him.

Naomi

Naomi turned to the waitress. "Just the coffee, please." The waitress left with a smile and promise to have the coffee right out.

Naomi glanced back at Erryl at the mention of her name, her lips pursing as she thought about how best to answer such a question. "I come from a land where people live simply, in ways less advanced that this place seems to be. As I imagine any place does, there are good people and bad." The thought sprang to mind that she could tell him more, but she suppressed it. Chances were good that her world was like any other world. For a brief moment, she stared right through Erryl as her mind gently probed for the missing connection but still could not find it. A blink found her mind back on the moment and she smiled politely at Erryl in the hopes that he had not noticed her momentary distraction. "What about where you come from?"

Pikol

Pikol waltzed into the cafe in the same carefree manner he did everything else. Of course he had intended on making a quick jaunt across the street to the butchers shop so he hadn't changed. He was still wearing his worn leather apron over his stained work shirt, both of them pulled tight over his considerable stomach. Pikol was sure there was still food juices still in his hair.

He stopped short, seeing a man and a woman conversing in a nearby table. He wasn't against talking to them, but he didn't want to intrude if they were on some sort of date. Instead of bothering them he found a table nearby so he could eavesdrop without being too obvious. Hopefully they wouldn't mind an old working man and his smelly work clothes.

((OOC: If you guys had a plan then feel free to tell me to bug off, I just wanted to run this character through some scenes to get a better idea of his personality.)

~ Erryl ~

"Our ways are not quite as complex as the ways here, but there are a lot of political issues, some of them more pressing than others. At the moment we are at peace, but in the time of my parents, there was a war," Erryl says, apparently not overly concerned about speaking of his homeland. Still, something Naomi said makes him take on a thoughtful expression. "I believe you are right that in any nation, there will be the good and the bad. Or any group of people at all that are not bound by a certain code of behavior that is necessarily one or the other," he muses.

He flicks a glance at the older man that walks in, giving him a somewhat absent nod as most of his focus is on Naomi.

((OOC: Sorry for the belated response folks.))

Naomi

A scowl flickered over Naomi's face at the mention of war, there but a moment before it was gone. She nodded at his assessment of the nature of people, absently bringing her arms to rest on the table. "Peace sounds nice," she murmured, her thoughts turning homeward. The door opened and man entered, quite carefree, and her senses jumped to wary attention. She straightened, her hands withdrawing to her lap once again. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched him approach and take a nearby seat.

Well aware that he sat within conversational hearing range, she took one deep breath, turned her body to face him slightly, and made eye contact. No greeting came forth, simply a question. "Are you familiar with this place?

"Even peace has consequences," Erryl says flatly. "Though I suppose those consequences will depend on the sort of war that is waged and the way that peace is brought about." He shakes his head. "A war may end, but that doesn't always mean that things go back to the way they were." He gestures briefly towards Naomi. "It may not have been your attention, but your words gave the impression that things are not peaceful in your land. Is this so?" he asks gravely.

With more interest now, he gazes at the other man to see what his answer to Naomi's question will be. His own face is carefully neutral, his expression polite without being warm or inviting.

Naomi

Naomi waited several second for a response from the stranger, but nothing so much as a twitch came from him. Her brows furrowed at the strange sight, but she shrugged it off and turned back to Erryl, only the cautious part of her attention aware of the stranger's presence. "Most in my land think there's peace. Some, like me, know that the peace only covers the dark deeds hidden away under its cover."

The corners of her mouth turned down in curiosity. "It sounds as if your peace is much the same. A calm cover that hides dangerous issues most wouldn't care about." Her tone held a tinge of bitterness, her eyes turning to the side to glare at things far away.

"That is only too true," Erryl agrees, his tone growing dark. And is that a hint of self-depreciation in his voice? "But I think, to some degree, there will never be such a thing as true peace. Still, it's a matter of whether or not the disruption comes from the leaders and so called 'respectable' elements of society, or whether they come from outsiders and dissidents." He shakes his head solemnly. "When I was younger I left my family's home because I couldn't condone some of the things they did, the things they believed."
