Hi, I've been playing clarinet for 6 years which has been since the 4th grade. I'm not in a marching band but I would like to be. I'm in my schools band though.

The reason for the wwhwwwh scal series is because we like that scale to have 8 unique pitches repeated in octaves, al though there are only 12 unique 'semitones' or pitches. Yes, in some oriental music there are 'quarter steps' which are between each half step, but our ears are so used to hearing pitch divided up into those 12 notes that we can't distinguish that small of an interval. Not every nation had used the 8 note scale system (which spans all the minors, majors, and any other scale you've played). I recall the native music of africa is based on a 4 tone series, and native americans as well. Southeast asia has often used the pentanoic scale series, commonly know to us as the 'black key notes only' songs. Ever heard Variations on a Korean folk song? Well, the original theme can still be played using only the black keys on a piano. That is also true with many of the simple 'chinese' songs we learn early on as well. If you are asking about why we use this scale series, why not ask all the other obvious questions? I mean, there's no particular reason C is concert pitch (other than because the majority of concert instruments are tuned to C). Why is the pitch A fixed at 440 for aerican tuning but 420 for European tuning? Why does the most basic scale start on C instead of A, like it's alphabet counterpart? Why are clarinets most commonly tuned in Bb (or A, I'm generalizing sopranos) when they can just as easily be made to tune to C like their string companions? These kinds of things don't particularly matter, because we aren't going to change any of this. Just learn what you can, and seek out what you can't.

Actually the main reason that most instruments are in the key that they are in is because there intonation sounds best in that key.

An Eb (above saprano not alto) Clarinet sounds very different than a Bb clarinet but often it will play there part or the oboes.

Stringed instruments have strings to use to tune their notes so you would go for the desired size for intonation and since the strings can be tuned to the desired pitch it only makes sense for them to be tuned in C.

There are 7 different modes not 8 (the eighth would be the octave).

There is Aeolian (Minor), Ionian (Major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian and Locrian. Each different mode represents the intervals used to make a scale.

Major being - W-W-H-W-W-W-H
Minor being - W-H-W-W-H-W-W

I'll save you the intervals of the rest. You can here each scale by taking a piano and playing the white keys only from one note to the octave above it. (Ionian starts on C and Aeolian on A and I believe Dorian on D)

As you will find quickly some of the scales sound a bit more traditional and some sound like a jumble of notes.

The most popular modes used are Major and Minor because our minds for some reason respond to them better.

Dorian is often used in Jazz music I believe.
_______________________________

The reason B sharp and C flat aren't the same note is take a look at your piano keys. There pattern is (starting from middle C)

white, black, white, black, white, white, black, white, black, white, black, white, white

notice that there are occasions where there are two white keys.

The reason is that when we started writing our music we understood that there are 8 notes in a scale BUT we failed to notice that there are twelve main audible notes.

So we assigned the 7 notes in the scale Letter Names (A through G)

But if we always wanted it to be black, white, black, white, on a keyboard then we should have changed it to having Six notes assigned to letter names and the rest of the 12 audible pitches using sharps and flats.

Then your B sharp and C flat would be the same note.

Hope I shed some light by posting a steak-pie sized post.

Do we have a music theory section in this guild?

no, I'm not asking that. I'm not eloquent in the first place, and going to my school (AKA the ghetto school) and living in a small city hasn't made me eloquent or helped me in music theory, either.
