Maia smiled, petting Seamus again. "He says yes," she said. "I ought to go say goodbye to the boys before they go back to work." She stood, giving Lori a brief hug before wandering back out to Research. She sought out Toby.
"Did you get your cupcake?" She asked. "I like making Monday's better for everyone."

Lori chuckled. Yes, he knew when Seamus approved. She was a cute little thing, wasn't she? "Sure. I'll see you in a bit."
When Maia made it back out to Toby, most of the cupcake were gone. She asked whether he had had one and he revealed the used paper in his hand with a smile. Yes, he'd had one.
"We saved you one," Dari said, offering a cupcake out. There were still a few left, but they had taken the time to make sure Maia would get one.

Most of the cupcakes were gone, she observed. So most everyone had gotten one! Good! "Good. Lori and Seamus really seemed to like them," She said. "Did you?"
She took the cupcake offered to her, beaming. They'd thought to save her one, even. "Thank you," She said. "Did you get one, Dari? You promised you'd try one." She unwrapped hers and took a bite. It was perfect! She would've never been able to make anything like this if it hadn't been for Toby. "No wonder they went so quickly!"

Toby nodded. "Yeah, they're good! Maybe even better the second day."
Dari shook his head softly. No, he hadn't. He did take one now, though, if a bit ashamedly. He had trouble peeling the paper away at first with no fingernails, but he just jabbed his finger in and pulled it away. He took a bite, looking at the cupcake as he admired its texture, and taking it to absorb like any other. He could stand to be one cupcake bigger. It was probably about time for a purge soon anyway.
Toby was smiling to Maia. It was good to have such a giving soul.

"I think they are," Maia agreed. Maybe things tasted better after waiting for them. She watched Dari take a cupcake, making sure he ate it. He'd promised, after all. She took another bite of hers, looking to Toby. She wiped at her face with a finger to make sure there was no frosting there.
"I told Lori about cookies next week. I think he's happy."

"Well I don't know anyone who doesn't like cookies," Toby reasoned. He looked around for a trash can and, finding none, kept the spent wrapper in his hand. "We should probably get headed to work. We'll see you later, right?"
Taking the cue that they were going to leave, Dari released some pressure and opened his mouth inhumanly wide and shoved it in, then altered the pressure to pull it down his approximation of a throat. Eating with the 'mouth' was purely for others' comfort. He just smiled then.

Maia gave each of the agents a hug, completely unfazed by Dari's ability to stretch his mouth wide enough to fit a cupcake inside. "Right. I'll go find something to read until class. See you soon!"
She looked for Seamus. "Hey kitty, want to come read with me?" she asked hopefully.

Hugs were returned and Toby gave Maia a wave as she escaped before heading back toward his office with Dari, leaving the remaining cupcakes behind. Seamus didn't respond verbally to the offer, but he did follow Maia when she began to walk.
Upon exiting class, Maia would find a strange sort of mist floating in the air, moving down the length of the Research department. Lori gestured vaguely to it.
"Hey, Michael. Haven't seen you in a while."
Suddenly the mist became a man, blowing toward the floor and emerging as legs, a torso, a head. It was a young-looking man with a head of blonde curls and sad blue eyes. He smiled and offered Lori a slight bow at the waist. At the moment he appeared in Victorian garb, which was quite the anachronism in modern times.

Maia didn't immediately associate mist with ghosts, but she did take a step back. How had Lori recognized him? The man that emerged from the mist; was he the ghost Toby had mentioned?
She moved closer to Lori nervously. "Hi," she greeted Michael. "Do you want a cupcake? There's probably one left."

Michael appraised Maia, looking her up and down. There was nothing lecherous about the attention but it was certainly a bit odd. The gentle smile remained on his face, but there was silence. A cupcake? He looked to Lori and Lori looked up from his paperwork.
"Oh! Sorry. Maia, this is Michael. Michael, Maia. She's a new client."
"The selkie." Michael half-asked, head tilting slightly.
"That's the one."
"It's a pleasure," he said, turning again to Maia but not offering a hand to shake.

Michael was a little strange, wasn't he? Maia wasn't sure what she thought of him. He didn't really seem particularly scary. And Lori was fine talking to him, which probably meant it was safe.
"Nice to meet you, Michael," She said. She wondered if she would be able to join the boys in their office yet. "Do you work here?"

"I do, on occasion," Michael admitted. Sometimes he wasn't prepared to do what others asked of him. He was a little unpredictable, but more so than any other deceased entity they had encountered. He had expressed a desire to leave the building in which he was stuck and it was their job to help. Relocating him to another empty building was the same situation, and it wasn't exactly nice to force a haunt on people, so he stayed here.
Lori was looking between the two, sensing Maia's tension and knowing Michael wasn't the most apt at quelling people's fears. It wasn't his concern if they didn't like him.
"I am an ambassador," Michael continued, "They come to me when they need to contact the dead. We're something of an exclusive club."

"Oh, well, that's very nice of you," Maia said. He was putting his ghostly ways behind him to help other ghosts! Thrilling! The selkie looked to Lori. Her expression said, quite clearly, "Get me out of here."
"So what does an ambassador do?" she asked. "Talk to people?"

Lori caught Maia's eye and a half-grin crawled up his lips. Most people were unnerved by Michael at first meeting. very rarely did one happen upon a ghost willing to hold a conversation.
"In a way. I mediate," Michael said. The incline of his head increased. he paused, just watching Maia in since with that same contented smile. "Are you afraid of me?"
In an instant he was gone. There was no fade, no flicker, just a sudden disappearance. Another moment and he appeared just in front of Maia, close enough to bump noses if either of them was less careful.
"You shouldn't be."

Michael was a strange guy. Sad eyes and a content smile--and once Maia began to protest that she wasn't scared of him, he'd disappeared. Had she offended him?
Apparently not. He reappeared right in front of her. She jumped. "N-no, of course not," she said. "I'm not scared."
