Andarien looked over his shoulder at his sister. "Oh ... hi. Well, you know how I have to remake my watch, right? Well, me and Shiro worked out how to make it work for the right number of hours, but now I just need to get the parts. The metalsmith says he's not good enough to make the parts we need, the wood smith says wood wouldn't work because it's too soft ... this guy says glass might work."
He was beaming as he said the last bit.

Miyuki looked thoughtful at this, it suddenly made sense as to why the man said it would last as long as Andarien didn't drop it. However things did happen and they would be traveling.
"Andarien... why not wait until we get to Caras Galadon? They have clockwork there...."

Andarien stared at Miyuki. "But ... why? If it's possible to get the parts here ... why wait? We don't even know how long it's going to be before we get there! And if I get it done here already then I can look around and stuff without Nana and Ada because I'll know when to be wherever I have to be at whatever time I have to be there and Nana and Ada won't have to worry so much about me!"
He didn't understand why Miyuki was telling him to wait. If there was something she wanted to do, wouldn't she try to do it as soon as she could?

"I suppose as long as you can find someone who can make it out of durable material I guess it wouldn't be necessary to wait, but you know, the time thing would only count for you. Mom and ada tell time by the position of the sun which wouldn't be as accurate as your pocket watch."
Really, no one ever said exact time here because the only 'accurate' (and she used that term loosely) time piece was a sun dial.
"And it has to be durable," she added, "We don't know where we're going to end up or what trouble we might find. I know you're careful with your stuff, but things happen."

"But it's different!" Andarien protested in frustration. "It's not like the parts would be sitting around to break if they fall or something! They'll be inside the watch casing, surrounded by other parts that would help keep it from breaking! And who cares if it's only for me? Aren't I important? I bet if it was something for you, you would think it was worth it!"
He glared at her, his jaw clenched. "Besides," he went on, "maybe the only reason no one tells time with watches here is because they don't have them yet. I bet if more people had them, they would use them."

Miyuki's ears laid back in her skull, she was hurt by that. As if she was saying what he was doing wasn't important. Of course she thought it was important for him! That's why she suggested Caras Galadhon, because they had the parts he needed and they were the best.
Besides, she knew glass even in a casing could break, they were small delicate pieces in something that was metal. Of course even Miyuki admitted she didn't know much about clockwork so maybe her brother was right but he shouldn't have accused her like that! If it were her, she would have waited because it was worth waiting for.
"I was just saying because they know clockwork and would have the best parts," she told him, "But I don't know anything about clockwork so I'll get out of your hair and stop asking stupid questions."
She slunk off to join her friends and decided whatever her brother was up to wasn't worth getting curious over.

River and Jess had overheard the dialogue between Andarien and Miyuki - it had been impossible not to - and when Miyuki came back to join them, they didn't know what to say. It was an awkward moment for them.
As for Andarien, he politely asked for his paper back from the shop keeper and, after tucking the paper back in his pocket, made his way straight to the door and went outside.
"Oh dear," Earendil murmured, watching Andarien go. He looked down at Lin. "Should we go after him? Or should we let him cool off for a bit?"

"Let him cool off," Lin murmured quietly so only Earendil could hear.
To be honest, she wasn't really surprised it happened. The two were very different (she really should send those two to do something together), and Andarien seemed so mature up until he sometimes said something that if she really, really thought about it, suited his age.
After all, he wasn't that old... a kid really. Except he was probably too smart and it was causing some confusion.
"Have to admit it's been a while since I've seen that temper," she added with a bit of wryly amusement, "But I think once we leave the shop, we should do something. That is... if you don't mind and talk to Miyuki and remind her how old her brother is, and the fact he's not as socially mature as he is smart."
And the hard part was his language skills now that he could speak any language was far beyond a child is age. As was his thinking processes.
"I'm not giving him an out for how he reacted, I'll talk to him about that," she murmured, "But Miyuki needs to remember that Andarien isn't always aware of what people's intentions really are, or how harmful his speech can be."
It use to be funny really (or exasperating) when he said things that were directly on his mind. Like calling a language funny or saying that an idea seemed too much trouble to be worth doing. Though maybe they should have nipped his speaking before thinking in the bud sooner.

Earendil nodded. "It probably won't be long, since it doesn't seem like anyone is doing much looking in here," he murmured back, feeling a bit bad about it. "We should also apologize to the owner before we leave."
He paused for a moment, then squeezed Lin's hand gently. "Actually, I'll do that right now," he decided. "I'll be right back."
And he moved off to speak with the shop keeper.

Lin nodded as Earendil went off to speak to the shop keeper. She did feel sorry about the whole, it was a bit of a mess and certainly ruined the feel.
Miyuki too also noticed that her father was speaking to the shop keeper and couldn't help but feel embarrassed. She rubbed her forehead, and didn't know who she was more angry at, her brother for being such a jerk, or herself for not leaving it. Really, in hindsight she probably shouldn't have even suggested Caras Galadhon to Andarien at all. If the shop here was willing to make it then that was good for them.
If he wanted to make the gears out of glass that was his business.
He still didn't need to accuse her of only thinking what she did as important.

River and Jess remained awkwardly silent, looking wordlessly at the items on the shelves.
After a minute, Earendil approached the three teens.
"Miyuki," he said quietly, taking her gently by the elbow and leaning close so that the others would not overhear him, "I'd like you to apologize to the shop keeper for your argument with Andarien. And then I'd like you to accompany me outside."
He gave her an I'm-not-kidding look before lowering his hand and heading towards the door himself.

He didn't even need to give that look. It wasn't like Miyuki hadn't foreseen it at all.
"Yes, ada," Miyuki murmured quietly.
At least he wasn't dragging her over like she was some irate child, even if she was feeling a bit like one. Making her way over to the shopkeeper, and gave a bow.
"I apologize for the disturbance I caused in your shop sir."

The shopkeeper bowed his head respectfully in return. "Thank you," he replied softly, perhaps a bit stiffly. "I appreciate your apology, and accept it."
Still, his expression did soften slightly after Miyuki had apologized.

"It will not happen again," she added.
Though it was more of a promise to herself. Really, she was too old to be making disturbances like this and now the day was ruined. Giving a good bye, as it was the only polite thing to do she stepped outside of the shop.
Lin sighed, if Earendil was going to talk now, she might as well go and talk with Andarien. So she too gave her good byes and left the shop to go find her son.

Earendil was waiting just outside the shop door, but Andarien was nowhere in sight. The street itself was very much the same as it had been.
When Miyuki exited the shop, Earendil stepped away from the wall to greet her with a grim smile. He wasn't looking forward to this, but really, it was well past the time when they needed to have this talk.
"Miyuki," he called her softly to get her attention.
