You can't train yourself to swing it like it was made of air. You'd have to be a giant to do so. It's one of those things that's purely fictional.
For example go pick up a magnet. Feel that thing. It's way heavier than it should be according to it's size. That's because it's made of metal.
The weight of a decent battle axe is going to be massive by comparison. You simply cannot swing it like it was made of air. You wouldn't want to as the weight of any weapon helps with the cutting action and the initial resistance allows for strikes which use explosive power rather than continuous.
Although I've heard viking axes can cut through horses I don't think this would be true of most axes. So on the point about hitting people with axes it's pretty much going to stun them however big or small it is as most people can't not react to the pain of having a solid piece of metal wedged into their arm.

On that count, even if it were possible, by the time you've built up the muscle required to swing a battleaxe like a feather, your muscles would be getting in the way of your everything.

Since people are talking about weapons:
Swords where the main choice for most armies around the world for a good reason, they're long blades (length varies depending on the type but the point being the majority of the weapons length is lethal) that have enough weight (again varying on type) to cut through most armor or stab through heavier armor while (with the exception of things like the Zweihänder or claymore) not so heavy as to be to limiting.
Spears where far less common in more modern era's and for good reason. While good at piercing armor their points got them stuck rather quickly or the shaft broken. The lethal part of the weapon was quite small and thus these where initially used for calvary on one charge or thrown then quickly discarded and exchanged for another side weapon such as a sword. While capable of slashing unless your opponent is unarmored this wouldn't tend to do much, even leather would be able to deflect most of such blows. Given that and the small hit point when compared to a sword, mace, axe, or most other weapons and you had to be accurate lest you hit with the shaft (which while painful would rarely be lethal let alone debilitating). Their real advantage came from single long strikes either from behind other infantry holding shields or from calvary running in and picking people then sweeping away and coming back with swords.
Axe's weren't all that common either as armies evolved. The downsides, even for the smaller of them, are quite apparent. They tend to be quite heavy and the heads are built in a fashion that while capable of piercing most armor without to much trouble require a lot of effort to swing. The upside of course is the wider heavier blades could deal far more debilitating strikes than most weapon and foil even the rarely used platemail.
Mace's are basically dumbed down versions of axes. Strong, lethal, but requiring a ton of effort to do much damage against more well armored opponents, typically quite slow and without a blade they rely on bludgeoning which can be effective but not nearly as much as a blade (Given some had spikes but none the less the stamina needed to wield these was exceptionally more than nigh any of the other weapons beyond possibly larger axes).
Anywho, in the end long bows, crossbows, etc reign supreme in medieval weaponry and decided most battles before they ever got close enough to swing most melee weaponry. Yay history.
That said my character uses the least effective of them all, but for rp purposes it's fun... his fists.

Hmm wondering if I should make an Arancar. If we're allowed to run a character from each side that is.

As far as I'm aware you're allowed to RP both "sides" however last I used to RP here we had to make another temp account to do so not to confuse anyone (not really sure why people would be confused...)
But yes I also agree with your statement, I was going to say something similar but you nailed it right on the head.
