Jóna Scrubbing her eyes, embarrassed, she tried to get a hold of herself. It didn't work terribly well. Her red, swollen eyes continued to push out tears, her nose ran, her drying curls were starting to frazzle. Lips trembling, she sat up on her knees, awed momentarily at Yakov's sheer immensity sitting across from her, and composed herself shakily, claiming one of his large hands to clutch between her own. "You are impossibly sweet, but I have to do this. It might scare the piss out of me, but if I don't do this, how could I ever live with myself not knowing if I might have survived? Does that make sense?" She hiccuped, her voice cracking but at least not stuttering. "I want to do it. I want to go in and see if I come out. I'm terrified, but this is my birthright. I will try." It might have actually sounded halfway convincing if she wasn't sniffing and squeaking and hitching with residual sobs.

Yakov Yakov raised a brow, still confused. If she wanted to do it, then why was she crying about it? However, her remark about his demeanor seemed to make more of a lasting impression than it should have. This Siberian had lead a bitterly cold life, especially toward women. He would let it slide-- for now. "You cry before battle?" he asked, puzzled. "Is this normal for... 'your people?'" He wanted to cut her a snide glance as if he were above crying, as tall and as mighty as he may look, but there was no covering up the fact that he still cried at least once a week over the loss of his best friend. After a moment, he managed to curl his lips into a smile. "So, if Jóna survives Grootslang, Jóna could surely survive my homeland..." he teased, holding his chin high in the air. She did more than enough to feed his curiosity, leaving him with nothing but questions for a female warrior from the stars.

Jóna He thought she was a fool, and perhaps she was. Pulling away from him, she curled up with her arms locked around her legs, back against the headboard. "No, of course they don't. They're never afraid. Why should they be? They survived something much worse than the Grootslang. I cry because I'm weak. I cry because I'm afraid. I cry because I'm a terrible warrior and I never practice and I'm going to die tomorrow," she spat bitterly. His assurance that her survival of the Grootslang would qualify her for his land did nothing to raise her spirits. In fact, she she wanted to curl up and die of embarrassment. This man choked bears. What did he have to fear? This was why she locked it in. He was so similar to her own family. They were all so tough. How had that trait skipped her? She scooted a little further away. A warrior of his caliber shouldn't waste his time on her.

Yakov He looked away, seemingly disheartened by her own disappointment and self pity. Yakov was generally a man of few words unless it meant berating a comrade for something foolish. Not even his younger siblings growing up showed as much as emotion as she was in this one moment. Fortunately, without him realizing it, the icy holds within his chest began to thaw, slightly. Yakov saw the shame in her mannerisms and empathized. "It is alright to cry with Yakov," he managed with a slight hesitation in his voice, feeling shy for once in his life. His hand placed itself upon the back of her neck. "If this is what you must do, then you must do it." He briefly thought it over, approximately how much time had passed since his entry into this strange cafe and when he and Ruslan would be expected to return to work. "What does Jóna practice?"

Jóna Pulling in a shuddering breath, she instinctively leaned into his touch. Yakov was not what she expected. If she had done this in front of her family, they would have told her all of the reasons she should be brave and hold herself with pride. She assumed this man would gruffly remind her to suck it up and have some pride. "I practice...well, I pretend to practice. I don't have much self-discipline. Anyway, strealth, agility, weapons...not that I'm permitted to take weapons in with me." She didn't notice, but she traced the line of one of his many scars.

Yakov Though she continued her explanation, it seemed the more she spoke, the more questions he was left with than answers. How could a warrior be sending themselves head-first to fight an enormous monster with almost guaranteed failure and yet be so ill prepared? His attention caught her mindlessly running a finger along a raised scar; a new one for him in the realm of 'body-parts-for-women-to-be-fascinated-by.' "No weapons?" he asked, still stunned. Yakov chuckled to himself. "Does Jóna plan on choking this Grootslang?" Which Grootslang he was referring to, he would leave entirely up to her.

Jóna She was tiring of the endless discourse about her trials. It consumed her entire life and now had even followed her here. Nevertheless, she explained herself the best she could. "I don't intend on doing anything with it. I just have to get to the other end of the cave system without it noticing and eating me. Fighting it is out of the question. It's suicide," she sighed. Realizing that she had been tracing the pattern of scars that marked his torso, she pulled her hand back with a flush of embarrassment. It was a good thing Yakov didn't care much about boundaries. Besides, he was probably still expecting to get a plunder out of this. On that note, so did she. "But I've been talking about this for too long. It's taken over my life. I'm sick of it. I just want to be distracted from it for a little while," she suggested, licking her lips. "Can Yakov do that?"

((OOC: Hmmmm. Anyone else interested in bringing characters in? I have quite a huge cast across my stories, so if there's some dynamic that people need, I could probably root around and find someone to match. Not that I'm guaranteed to find any particular thing, but I can look. smile ))

((Original thread can still be found in the archive subforum. I don't think it contains a description, though. The cafe is kept fairly ambiguous so it can be seen and used in whatever capacity it's needed for.))

Naomi Naomi stepped into the inn and froze. This wasn't the inn. The moment she stepped through the door, the scene had changed. Before she stepped through the door, her companions waited inside for her to join them at their table. The innkeeper had been visible lounging against the wall as he watched his customers for indications that they needed service. She had gone inside to join her companions and found herself in this strange place. A smiling waitress greeted her. "Hi, welcome to the cafe! You can take a seat wherever you'd like and I'll be right there to take your order." Naomi bobbed her head in thanks without thinking, about to turn to leave when a strange feeling stopped her. What if she had suddenly come to this strange place for a reason? A thousand questions followed to plague her mind, and she no longer found herself sure she should leave immediately. She instead swept her green gaze around the cafe warily to take its measure. If any patrons sat within, they sat in a booth out of her range of vision. The cafe felt comfortable, but a shiver of discomfort at the strange entrance into a strange place prompted her to pull her cloak a little bit closer around her shoulders. She felt out of place in her leather boots and riding trousers. Although the cafe staff's clothing was foreign to her, she was clearly the foreigner here. She chose a side booth, one where she had a good view of anyone that came into the cafe. Her travels had taught her to exercise caution and awareness in new places. The waitress appeared at her table with a suspiciously shiny menu. "Just let me know when you're ready, okay?" Naomi thanked the waitress as she took the strange menu, then settled to looking at the unfamiliar items. ((OOC: I have no idea if there is anyone in the cafe right now. If there is, sorry I missed you!))

A short time later a man enters the room. For all intents and purposes, to those inside the cafe, he looks like he is in his early to mid-twenties. He has short, evenly cut, medium brown hair and his face is clean-shaven with a certain boyish charm to it, even though he's decidedly on the pale side. His eyes are a soft shade of grey. The clothes he wears are as out of place as Naomi's, although they don't match hers either. Instead one might guess that he's a well to do gentleman, the kind that has never had to work for a living. But they're a dark grey in color with little extra ornamentation, showing a stronger sense of decorum than ostentation.
As he enters, he looks startled, though his expression quickly evens out into a pleasant facade, though his eyes remain wary. Keeping his pace even and unhurried, he takes a seat, not terribly far away from Naomi, although not so close that it seems to be his intention to draw near to her.
