"Maybe their writing developed differently over time," Miyuki suggested, "I know their writing isn't the same as the Westland, but it never occurred to me to ask why."
Then again, she noted, she never learned how to write in that language, and wasn't so sure if her parents knew.

"Can you read it?" Jess asked, stepping aside so that he wouldn't block the sign from Miyuki's line of sight.
River was still looking at the sign. "It doesn't even look similar to our writing," she muttered in disbelief.

Miyuki shook her head, "I never learned. After a while, being able to speak becomes more important than to write, especially since I do know how to write in high and common elvish."
She paused and looked at it and then amended.
"The one used back at the Four Lands."
She also could do Japanese and Common Tongue (or Gaian English as it were).

River let out a sigh of disappointment, and Jess smiled and put one arm around her shoulders.
"Don't worry too much about it," he told her softly. "We can just ask."
"Ask what?" asked Andarien, who had wandered up behind the three. He blinked up at them curiously, wondering what they were talking about.

Miyuki wondered and pointed to Andarien, "What that sign says. No one can read it."
She then couldn't help but ask, because she did wonder so about it.
"Can you?"

Andarien nodded. "Yeah, Shiro's been teaching me since we first left Namonuito. I thought you already knew how to read it, since you were here before."
River and Jess looked at Andarien expectantly, but he didn't seem to realize that they were waiting on him to read the sign for them.
"Well, what does it say?" Jess asked calmly, before River became overexcited.
Andarien blinked at them again. "Oh. They're both twenty styl."
"Styl?" River repeated blankly. She looked to Miyuki for an explanation.

"That's the currency here," Miyuki explained, "Until a few years ago, the people here couldn't mine that deep or far from the city because of the gnomes. What they have manage to mine, and they have a lot of is marble, hence the walls and palace being made out of the stuff. Their currency is also marble coins called styl."
That being said, they didn't have any.
"If you want anything here, you'll have to trade. The last I was here, mom and ada just used the coins, especially gold is a rare thing here.... well I'm not sure about now that they can mine in other places. It might have changed since then, but either way, you'll have to trade."

River and Jess exchanged a look. "Unfortunately, we don't have anything to trade," Jess said softly.
River squeezed his hand. "You said you used to have the one game ... I'm sure we'll see it in other places, somewhere we can get it."
Jess smiled gently, clearly feeling a bit foolish. "Yeah ... somewhere." He turned to ask Andarien about something else, but Andarien was already gone. He had run off to speak to the shop owner, just as he had at the last shop.

Miyuki looked curiously over at her brother.
"I wonder what he's asking for now. Surely not gears, wood would be easier, but I don't know if they would last as long as metal...."
Though she supposed she could be wrong, but that didn't seem to make much sense to her because they were also so small.

"It's funny, seeing him talking to the shopkeepers so eagerly," River giggled. "He used to be so afraid of everyone ..."
"It probably helps he's learned some other languages," Jess pointed out. Of course, he didn't realize that Andarien knew every language now, but it was obvious to anyone that he had a clear grasp of at least Common Elvish now. "It makes it easier for him to understand others and there's less to be afraid of."
That made River laugh. "And what's your excuse?"
Jess blushed, but he was chuckling, too.

Miyuki chuckled, "I think it's also his obsession over his work that allows him to get over his shyness."
There wasn't anything else other than the small woodwork she was interested in looking at. So she waited until everyone else was done.

In the end, they had to wait a bit for Andarien, but then they were once more on their way. The next shop was the glass shop, a modest little shop with delicate figurines, fragile dishes, and with signs advertising windows for homes.
Once again, Andarien went straight to talk to the young man behind the counter, leaving the others to look around on their own.

Now Miyuki was very curious, because she really couldn't imagine what Andarien needed to talk about. So instead of looking at all the other stuff, she went to follow Andarien to see what he was asking about.
He must have some sort of plan cooking in that brain of his.

"... compared to other materials," the shopkeeper was saying to Andarien, who was listening intently. "It wouldn't be as durable as metal, if that's what you're used to ... but it would be strong, and as long as you don't drop it it would last indefinitely."
"Even as small as this?" Andarien asked, holding out the paper he'd been showing to all the shopkeepers so far.
The man took the paper and looked at it intently. "I would have to ask my wife," he murmured, "but I do believe it's possible."

"Andarien, what are you asking?" Miyuki finally asked.
She wondered, since he was asking all the shops they had been through so far.
