"Sorry,"
she grins as he hands her the second can and it gets added to the pot. "I'm used to deal with stubborn patients who refuse to listen to what a trained nurse has to say. Clearly I don't know as much about their medical limitations as they do...well thats one thing I don't miss." She sighed blissfully, refusing to think about what she did miss.

He kinda squinted at that.
"Is there anything... no I probably shouldn't bring it up since you seem to not want to think about it."
He says.

Kayla sighed sadly. "I miss alot of things Reaper. I miss my job, I miss my family, I miss not having to kill and run all the time. I miss going to bed and knowing I'll wake up in the morning...I miss people." She looked down sadly.

"But hey!" She said, trying to cheer up, "I've got you two! And since I met you...it's been easier." she said with a smile in his direction.

"I am pretty good at keeping you from getting yourself killed, aren't I?"
He says with a big grin as he reclines back.

"But I am sorry about all that."
He says with a sincere look.

"Yeah, you are good at that. But in fairness, I have to keep saving your butt too mister!" Kayla truly enjoyed the banter and was absolutely ecstatic that her friend was going to be alright. At least for now.

She had been doing a it of research while he and Sam had slept, and she knew that she was close to a break through. She was missing only one key piece of information. However, the stasis and the regenerative formulas combined appeared to be strong enough to stay the virus for days. The blood and tissue samples that she had injected them into were not changing at all. They had not continued to mutate, and were not getting any worse, which was an amazing sign. Maybe even without a cure, Reaper would live.

"Hey if I hadn't pushed you out of the way then you would have ended up falling thru to the bottom."
He said to her.

"Hey," she grinned while stirring the pot, "I had to create a whole virus stasis and shoot someone to get more research for you." She smiled playfully.

"Thank you for that though...I'd say we're pretty even."
She knew that neither of them was interested in keeping tally and that they were in this together, but the teasing was always fun.

((Sorry I was away for so long. I slept over at a friends house))

Sam had been laying in the corner, awake, while Reaper and Kayla had been talking. She had to say, she missed it all too. If the world hadn't fallen apart, she would have had a good life. Spending her mornings training for the Olympics, and the afternoons working in the gun shop. It would have been fantastic. A dream come true.

But then her father got infected, and changed her mother and little brother in the same night. When Sam had gotten home the next day, she was greated with an attempt at her life. The first Acid she had ever killed was her baby brother.

Sam understood why Kayla missed it all. Silently, Sam made a promise to Kayla.

'I swear to you, I will not let you or Reaper get infected. You wont lose either of us. I won't let it happen. We'll be each others family, if you let us.'

Kayla turned to look at Sam who was watching them silently from the corner.

"Ah! Good, you're awake!" She stood up and walked over to Sam. "How are you feeling? Were you hurt anywhere?" She started to give Sam a once over, looking for any injuries or Acid burns. She appeared to be alright.

Kayla shifted over to Sam and started fussing needlessly. Normally Sam would find it annoying but she knew that if she didn't let her check on her, Kayla would throw a big fuss, so she endured it.

"Yeah I'm fine, Kayla. I had an extra long sleeve shirt. My old companion was a bit paranoid about this kind of stuff." Sam laughed slightly at Kayla's face as she stared at her Acid-burnless arms.

"Well the Acid can still eat through the layers. How do you think I got this?" She showed her the injured arm with a huge indent from where she had cut the infected flesh from her body.

"We're going to need to find more clothes soon with the way I keep going through them." The yellow shirt that she had gotten only two days ago was absolutely destroyed. Kayla moved back to stir the pot of food.

"So.." she started slowly, knowing it might be a touchy subject. "Who was your old companion?"

Sam tensed instantly. She knew it was going to come up eventually. After all, she had mentioned him quite a few times already. She had just hoped that it would happen later rather than sooner.

"Oh." Sam whispered. "Well, he was really paranoid. Like, Mad Eye Moddy from Harry Potter, paranoid. The Irony was that his favorite phrase was actually 'Constant Vigilance!!'. I guess you could say he was my best friend." Here Sam paused. It was the first time she had ever told anyone about him.

"His name was Dante. He was my grandfather. He wasn't that old, so he could still keep up and hold his own in the world. God I miss that old man."

Kayla looked down sadly. "What happened to him?" She asked slowly, already knowing exactly what had happened. It was the same thing that had happened to everyone else on this god-forsaken planet. But Kayla felt that Sam might want to talk about it...she only mentioned the man all the time.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 09, 2010 9:27 pm

Sam sighed heavily before leaning back against the wall, looking up at the ceiling.

"He died."
Glancing over at Kayla before looking back upwards, she smiled softly. "He didn't even get bitten, that's the sad part. He wasn't that old, only about 50 or so, he'd had my mum young. But still, he tripped down a staircase, broke his calf on his left leg, shattered his knee cap on the right, dislocated his shoulder. He was always kind of delicate boned. Unlike me, I got my bones of steal from dad." Here se chuckled sadly.

"Still, it was too much. It would have taken weeks for his leg to heal, months for his kneecap. Even then, he wouldn't be able to walk, let alone run. At the time, we were trying to escape from a hoard of Acids. Dada knew I would only slow him down. Since his shoulder was dislocated, he begged me to do it."

By now, tears were streaming down Sam's face but her voice never broke, never faltered.

"I had to do it. I wouldn't leave him there alive, as screaming food for the Acids. He wouldn't let me move him, either. So I had to do what he asked me to do. I shot my own grandfather - the only family I had left - in the skull. I put down my Dada like an animal! He didn't even get a proper funeral! He practically raised me! The worst part, though was that his last words were, 'Remeber, constant vigilance. I love you.'"

By half way through her story, Kayla had tears streaming down her own face. She hadn't expected this, and yet, it seemed like a better way for the man to go.

"Look, Sam. Trust me on this, the virus is painful. And worse, the people suffering from it don't loose consciousness. I helped in the hospitals early on, and the people we had quarantined would scream for days. I mean you can hear them."
She paused as they both listened to a world full of screams. A world of pain that they all had become disgustingly adapted to.

Kayla knew a thing or two about being forced to kill family, and it was something that one never got over. Though she had never loved the man who brutalized her brother, her mother and herself and didn't regret shoving him down the stairs as a child, the guilt of murdering someone in cold blood often woke her screaming at night. Of course now there were other things that haunted her dreams.

"Hard though it is to hear...you sparred him that pain. You spared him months of torture and the lose of his own identity. He loved you and would have wanted you to be happy Sammy..."
She knew the girl would probably scoff at this or disregard it completely, but Kayla knew that it was the only true comfort Sam might be able to take in the act.
