I'm moving on to FF2 in the hopes that it'll be easier. I couldn't even find working cheat codes for the 1st one. Oh well. Late 80s NES games are usually finicky in emulators.

the NES games are the hardest, you can get FFIII on the DS, it's not that hard, FFV and VI are not too hard, and they are on the Playstation, FFIX is good to play and similar to FFVIII, it's also on playstation, FFX is a little trickier and the first on PS2 in terms of main game.
