Engela glanced back at the others in the group as they walked through the compound. About to make a comment - she'd been reaching out to Mathias and still felt nothing, which was highly annoying - she stiffened and her head turned. She snapped up one hand to stop the rest of them before moving cautiously ahead and glancing around the corner.
The torn and bloodless corpse practically at her feet made her shudder slightly. So. They were too late, then. To prevent this, anyway. But...
Her thoughts stopped there. Every time before, when Mathias had had trouble controlling his thirst, she had been there for him and letting him go after her had stopped it. But he'd never done anything like this before. It had taken him over completely, and...
She'd never stopped it when it was like that. She'd never even seen him like this before. Backing out of the hallway and listening warily - not that she would hear him until he was too close to get the others out, most likely - she gestured to the others. "Be careful," she said tersely. "If you see Mathias, let me know right the hell away. I don't want him to go after any of you."
Aura stared at her mother, going slowly pale. She knew that look in her mother's eyes. Engela was - for one of the rare times that Aura could remember - frightened. Truly frightened. Not for herself, but for the rest of them. And that made Aura frightened.
Vix looked curiously from Engela to Aura. She knew she was missing something, but from the look on the faces of both women, she had the idea it would be better not to ask. Instead, she nodded silently and checked her grip on her sword.

Artemis was walking with his back to the group, covering their rears. His staff was glowing as he held his hand at the ready to cast a spell.
Mathias was sitting, perched on a pile of torn bodies, licking blood off his hands. Well, they used to be hands. Now, they were claws, perfect for tearing into flesh and shattering bones. Then Mathias snapped his head up, hearing and smelling life down the hall. Something was different, there was a subtle scent that was recognizable, but from something so far lost to him that he didn't know what it was. Hopping off the pile of bodies, Mathias got low to the ground, stalking down the hallway and following the sound of blood and smell of flesh. He moved into the shadows of the corridor, closing in on the group. Finding a suitable spot, he remained motionless. His black, soul-less eyes watching for movement. He reached out with his powers, extinguishing almost all the lights, so the shadows controlled the hallway.

Engela's blue eyes flashed briefly when the lights dimmed almost entirely. "s**t," she muttered. "Too late. He's here. Aura, come here right now. Right here," she snapped when Aura hesitated. "Artemis, you too. Don't be heroic and turn that light down. The rest of you get your damned weapons out."
She lifted her hand, reached into the currents, and a deep, almost wine-red light, deeply coloured but still so bright it almost hurt to look at, spilled out around her - around them. It wasn't much as far as protections went, but she knew Mathias. Knowing him, she knew he would take out the light first. And since he couldn't extinguish hers without killing her, it was logical to go for her first.
Bringing the rest of them into what was bound to be a painful, personal and possibly fatal confrontation was something that the naturally private Engela would rather not have done, but there was no choice. Mathias had given her no choice. And if she could bring him back, he would be hearing about it later.
Her attention was entirely focused on her surrounding area. She could hear Aura's almost noiseless breathing - her daughter was very good at fading into the background when it suited her. But it was Mathias she was listening for, and she hoped she would hear it in time.

Mathias squinted when the red light illuminated the hall. As his eyes adjusted, he growled. He moved silently along the wall, staying hidden in the shadows, until he was very close to Engela. But instead of lunging immediately, he studied the face. Something about this female was familiar to him. He sniffed again, the same scent filling his lungs. Turning to the younger girl, he sniffed a third time. It was HIS scent on the young female, as well as the scent of the other female. Shaking his head, Mathias stepped into the light, hissing but not attacking. Their blood called to his thirst, but he HAD to find out why these females smelled so familiar. And why the one female smelled like him and the other female. Hissing, he advanced on the group, his fangs exposed in a snarl but his claws weren't raised in attack.

"Bloody buggering hell," muttered Engela when Mathias appeared. Yeah, it was too late. But he wasn't attacking just yet, and she used that one moment of reprieve to snap, "Everyone back off. If he takes me down, then you go for him. Until then, just keep back!" Not looking to see if they did, she stepped towards Mathias, and the light dimmed - but only in the space that separated them. Behind her, it remained as bright as ever, perhaps even brighter. Engela was taking no chances.
"Mathias," she said. It wasn't an appeal to the man she knew was in there somewhere. She wasn't trying to call him home, at least not yet. All she wanted was for him to know she knew him. Whether or not he knew her was irrelevant. But she thought he must have recognized something, even if it was just his own blood in Aura, or he would have attacked. "Do you know me?"
She waited for his response, if there was going to be one. If not, she was likely going to die here at the hands of the only man she'd ever really loved, while the child they'd made watched. Well, there was a certain poetic justice in that, and there were probably worse ways to go. She couldn't think of any right off the top of her head, but surely there were some.

Tilting his head, Mathias stepped towards her. Sniffing audibly, Mathias snarled, straightening up. "Know you.....you seem....familiar. Who is SHE?" Growling, his claw snaps up, pointing towards Aura with a single talon. "She....smells like me!" Mathias looks at Aura more, studying her face. There were parts, very subtle parts, in her face that called to him from somewhere deep in his mind.

Engela lifted a brow, outwardly as calm and cool as could be. Inwardly, she was a vicious tangle of emotions. "She's my daughter," was her only reply. If Mathias had any intelligence whatsoever in this form, he ought to be able to figure it out from there.
Well, at least she was familiar to him. It wasn't much, but it was something. He knew her, vaguely, and probably it was only her own wishful thinking that had her thinking he might just remember more if he recalled her.
Aura hung back, looking from her mother to her father in a sort of hurt disbelief. She'd never seen her father this way. Hell, she'd never seen her mother look this tired, this stressed, and suspected it had a lot to do with Engela's fear for her. For the others, sure, but mostly for her.
And although she felt angry and sick and sorry, she couldn't do anything about it. This was her mother's game, and interfering at the wrong moment could ruin everything. So she kept shut.

Mathias's mind, though clouded by the thirst, slowly began piecing things together. Taking one final step towards Engela, Mathias licked his fangs. "I want....truth....blood truth."

"Truth?" Engela laughed. In it, Aura could hear the ghost, the echo, of the woman she knew her mother had been before she and Einon had ever been born. Before her parents had found one another again. Looking over at Vix, she could see in the older woman's grey eyes that she heard it, too.
"Truth," repeated Engela, smiling slightly - that cool, amused smile that Mathias would have recognized had he been himself. The one she used to hide deep emotions. "A worthwhile ambition. Tell me, then, what truth is. Show me." She stepped forward, effectively separating herself from the group - and not coming quite close enough to Mathias to close the gap. "Show me. If you want the truth..." Her head angled back, showed the clean lines of her neck. "Then take it."

Mathias took the two remaining steps, placed his hands on Engela's cheek and shoulder, exposed his fangs and sunk them into her neck. The instant her blood touched his lips, all the memories of them and the history they shared rushed back into his mind, wiping the Thirst away and breaking its hold over him. He flew back as if pulled by some unseen force, an explosion of reality and conscince laying everything he did before him. Shaking as his body reverted back to his normal form, he looked at his hands, covered in blood. He looked at the pile of corpses, the blood on his clothing, and the memories of what he did. "Gods....what have I done." He fell to his knees and began to weep, weep over the loss of control, weep over his weakness, and weep for what he had been about to do to his love, their daughter, and the others. His shoulders shook as he shed tears for every life he killed without reason.

Engela sighed wearily. "Aura," she said flatly. "Will you please take the others back home? I need to speak with your father."
"Uh-oh," muttered Aura. But, ever obedient, she turned to the others and shrugged. "Well, I can't take this many people without Einon, but I guess we'll wait for you out front," she said over her shoulder before nodding at the hallway they had left through. Let's go, she mouthed at the rest of them. Vix smiled faintly at her before helping the younger blonde girl get the others out of the hallway, leaving Engela and Mathias alone.
Engela knelt by him once they were gone. Instead of offering her usual pithy commentary, she simply remained silent for several seconds. "You know that if you'd tried to hurt any of them I would have stopped you," she said quietly at last. If I could have, she thought but didn't add - it wouldn't help Mathias's peace of mind any. "That was why I was taking point in the first place. Otherwise I'd have let someone else play hero."
