She was struggling again, her chakra levels diminishing. She frowned, forcing them to stop before they completely disappeared. She kept the flow going, but it wasn't enough to actually sustain the exercise. She had to bring it back up to speed. Her thoughts were temporarily disrupted by this lapse, but she finally go back onto the subject of her team.

She first of all, naturally, hoped that one of them was a handsome and heroic figure, like a version of the Otokage...but her own age! He'd be strong and brave and a complete gentlemen. When the chips were down he'd come and rescue everybody! and he'd say things to her like "With you fighting beside me..." her dream teammate had unnecessarily bouncy and shimmery hair, which was blowing in a wind while his teeth actually sparkled "I'll never lose..." his teeth gave a particularly bright sparkle.

'Yeah that's perfect!'

Kimiko opened her eyes annoyed. "Oooooh! No way! Why can't I get it together today! I was fine a few days ago..." she crossed her arms. 'I don't know how yet... but this is all Maboroshi's fault.'

She put her hands back together, her mind smoothing over and wiping out all her buzzing thoughts. Okay...maybe it was what she was thinking about... maybe she needed something more... serene... she tried picturing tranquil meadows and sun swept fields, her minds eye filling with her very definition of calming. She tried again, her chakra levels starting to build She just had to get herself back in the swing of things she was sure... she closed her eyes...

Kimiko's control lapsed yet again, the power retreating back into her chakra heart. She sighed depressed 'What the heck...am I really that tired from training with Mom this morning...?' she rubbed her hands frustratedly through her hair. 'Okay Kimiko get it together! You are a champion of love and justice! It's time to buckle down and get to it! She adjusted her fingerless gloves, and clenched her fists. 'My blazing spirit will defeat any all obstacles that are thrown against me!' her eyes seemed filled with the fires of drama "NoW! CHAKRA! COME OUT!" she resumed the meditative position, her face scrunching up in concentration.

She was struggling, but she was actually making progress, her chakra levels were starting to pick up again. She needed to keep pushing her self further until she finally reached her chakra peak. The chakra was still flowing as a mere trickle through her coils, the spiritual originated energy apparently resisting her will. Sure she was able to use her chakra efficiently, but at the same time controlling it like this was hard, flooding her system to the brink with raw chakra while still keeping it inside her body... it was a fruitful exercise, but only if she could pull it off...and with the struggle she was facing now she wasn't sure.

Kimiko was just starting to get annoyed now. What in the world was wrong with her today! Was she still tired from her all night mission? She could tell her chakra reserves were fine, so it was really just her control over it. She muttered a few obscenities such as "Darn" and "shoot" before resuming her attempt. The chakra was still flowing, but she still couldn't increase the pressure in the coils. Her scrunched up face fell calm, and she tried yet again to use a serene state of of mind. She shut out her frustration, and tried her hardest to manipulate the over flow of her chakra without taking it too far. She knew she could do this, she just had to try.

She put her mind of the training, let herself drift away from the task and delved into her own thoughts. She knew she was making this harder than it was... she just had to relax...and take control naturally.

She tried to focus on something again...something that wouldn't disrupt her thought, but still allow her to become absorbed in it. She tried to think of something... anything...

"Did I ever tell you the story of the youthful engine Kimi!?"

The young Kimiko shook her head, "No. What's it about daddy?"

Her father made a face "Ooooh! You're so adorable!!" he then regained his composure. "It's all about this one little engine! And this impassable mountain he had to climb!" Kimiko listened intently. "Thounsand's of enemy ninja attacked him upon the mountain, but the youthful engine said with burning eyes of passion "I think I can...KICK ALL YOU'RE UNYOUTHFUL BUTTS!" her father then made various punching motions "And he gave them a this, and that, then he finally defeated them all with power of JUSTICE!" he struck a dramatic and heroic pose. "And that's exactly how the story goes.

"That's so cool daddy!"

Her mother was in the kitchen washing dishes, her face twitching in disbelief. "Idiot..."

Kimiko had a suddenly exasperated look on her reminiscing face. She'd keep trying to think of something else...

Her chakra finally back up to speed, she let her mind continue to cast about... It struck her now of how many things caught her interest, and how remarkably few of them were actually practical. She for example loved stories and manga and all sorts of those things, especially the heroes and heroine's inside them, but then other than emulate their eternally beautiful way of life, code of honor, and etc., there was nothing more she could do then enjoy them. Her real life interests right consisted of...of...becoming a true champion of justice...and...she thought harder. The Genin exams coming up, her mother's strange talent with a sword, and beating Maboroshi... all in all she had to admit...that was a pretty small strike zone...maybe she should get a hobby besides manga and training... nah.

Her chakra fell back again, but this time it wasn't her fault. A butterfly had landed at the end of her nose. She wiggled and the butter fly fluttered slightly, but still it seemed refused to leave the area of her face. She lifted her finger up from under it, forcing it the perch there. "Hey little guy, I''m really busy right now, I suppose you must be tired from flying about all the time, but could you rest somewhere else please?" As though the butterfly could understand every word she said, it flew off, settling on a leaf at the end of the branch. inching her nose before returning to work, she tried to restore her progress.

Kimiko's charka did indeed return to it's previous compacity, and she tried to clear her mind once more, thinking about one thing to the exclusion of any other distractions...

She really hoped that she could master this c-rank jutsu and get her katana in time for the exams... she had one more academy jutsu, which she could study tomorrow as part of her chakra training, and then she'd be technically ready... but... she still didn't like the idea of not fulfilling at least those two goals. Maboroshi was going to be at those same exams, as were her future teammates. Her future sensei would likely be judging her on her performance at them. She was going to make an impression that counted. They wouldn't forget the Kimiko Momoe...

Maboroshi in particular she wanted to show up. He wouldn't accept a direct challenge from her, but if they were picked to fight one another int he exams, as she'd heard might be a possibility, then he'd have no choice, and she'd finally get a chance to prove herself... but then the image of X0009 appeared in her mind. But Maboroshi was stronger then her, she couldn't deny this...right now he could probably defeat her with a single attack... and that bugged the HELL out of her! She had to get stronger, she wouldn't rest until she was. This was an ironic choice of words because to one looking on from the outside, she would have appeared to be doing just that. Her eyes closed and her expression gentle, the sun splashed across her, giving her the look of a sleeping angel...

'I know I can do it... I just have to never give up, as a champion justice, I'll succeed!'

Since she could remember, Kimiko had never had that many friends. She couldn't really understand it... She was a nice person wasn't she? Was she too up in people's faces? She really did try and not be to up in their faces... was it because she was...she remembered what her mother had told her. "Weird". But why was it weird to pursue her dream? Why was it weird to train toward your goal... she just didn't get it... still, she didn't let it get to her that often. People did like her, it wasn't that. But she'd never truly had a person she could call "Friend". She supposed the closest thing she had was...

An exaggeratedly evil vision of Maboroshi's face appeared in her mind, laughing maniacally. She really didn't even want to contemplate how sad that was. He arch nemesis was her closest thing to a friend... how pathetic was that. But that was also part of the reason she was looking forward to being put on a team. Maybe she'd finally be able to make a real friend, not just a friendly acquaintance.

In retrospective, Kimiko had actually had a friend once... but...in the end it turned out she wasn't a real friend at all...friends didn't turn on one another over things like that... So...maybe the reason Kimiko didn't think she had any friends was because she was picky... either way, they weren't friends anymore.

Kimiko remembered every detail clear as day.

((To pass the time, I came up with a highly amusing spur of the moment sub plot. Yay spontaneity. ))

Kimiko and Mariaye' had been friends since they met, even before they came to academy. So when they were seated one empty seat apart in the academy, they'd been greatly pleased. They were both overly energetic and short tempered, and they got along famously... until that day.

Kimiko was sucking down her juice with a sour expression, when Mariaye' sat down beside her. The roof of the academy was often empty during lunch break, and Kimiko and she had adopted it as their favorite place to eat.

"Hey!" Mariaye greeted with a huge smile "So what'd I miss this morning."

Kimiko grumbled something inaudible.

Mariaye tilted her head "Hm? What's the matter I expected you to chew me out for skipping or did you finally realize that your always late so complaining about me-"

Kimiko interrupted her "That jerk!"

Her friend looked curious "What jerk?"

She stood tall looking livid "Mabo...ra sh- Xe- WHATEVER HIS NAME IS!" she crunched her juice box. "He's the new transfer guy! He's sitting right between us and he's a total JERK!"

Mariaye' tilted her head. "Hm? He's a jerk?" she cast her eyes upward as though imagining him. "So...why is he a jerk?"

Kimiko cracked her knuckles, her eyes on fire "He laughed at me! I was being really nice and explaining all about love and justice to him and he laughed at me! He said no one could really be so stupid! He's more than a jerk "He's the purest form of evil! He's a monster! An abomination! A debauchery of humanity!"

Mariaye' blinked wide eyed "Kimi do you even know what half those words mean? Maybe if you didn't talk so odd, people wouldn't laugh at you...I mean we're like eight ya know."

But Kimiko didn't seem to hear her. "EVIIIIIIIIIIIIL!!"

Mariaye' and Kimiko peaked their heads in the class room. "Is that him?" Mariaye' asked, her blue eyes going wider.

"Yes." Kimiko said covertly. The one with the lab coat...I'll bet he's a mad scientist with all sorts of wicked experiments..."

"He's kind cute looking from here... he looks like a lost lamb or something..."

"It's just a mere facade!" Kimiko insisted "He's the devil's advocate! the axiom of all wickedness and malice! We have to approach him with...Mari?" she looked to see her friend had gone. She searched about again to see her standing inside the classroom next to her seat, addressing her new nemesis "Mari no!" she dashed forward to rescue her friend.

"So your name's Xen huh?" Mariaye' asked conversationally.

Xenon blinked his eyes completely neutral. "Yes...you may call me that at any rate."

She held out her hand "It's nice to meet you." He accepted it shaking her hand. Kimiko looked flabbergasted, like her friend had just shaken hands with the lord of all darkness. "I'm Mariaye'."

Xen nodded "It's a pleasure to meet you miss Mariaye', you've a very exotic name." she beamed at him turning slightly red as she sat down in her seat.

"Oh! Thanks." she was ignoring Kimiko's hand signals of "No!" and "DON'T!" "So um... where are you from Xen?"

"I'm from a village quite a ways away from here, near the edge of the Land of Rice." As her friend continued to conversate with the demon spawn, Kimiko took the time to draw a large sign that said "HE'S EVIL! DON'T GET PULLED IN!!" Which like her hand signals was ignored. Kimiko watched in terror as her friend sank under the vicious serpents spell. Finally she sat down in her own chair, her eyes glistening with passionate fire. "Mabo..djf...."

"Maboroshi, Momoe-san." Xen corrected with a polite accuracy.

"Yeah! Maboroshi! Stop trying to worm your way into the hearts and minds of the innocent!"

Xen raised an eyebrow, his neutral expression becoming a slight smirk. "Heh, what are you talking about?"

Kimiko put a finger to his nose which he seemed to not think much of, but before she could put him in his place... "Kimi stop picking on poor Xen. He lost his parents you know, he's living all on his own." She made puppy dog eyes "Imagine how hard it must be for you..."

Xen lifted an eyebrow, his smirk growing at the look of shock on Kimiko's face. he suddenly fell into an act. "Oh yes..." he smoothly, turning to face Mariaye' "I'm just so saddened and weighed down by their deaths...sometimes it's...hard to get up in the mornings..."

"Oh you poor guy!" Mariaye' actually broke into tears hugging him, Xen all the while smirking at Kimiko.

Kimiko clenched her fists 'MABOROSHI YOU FIEND!!!!'
