On a different note, am I the only one that thinks Elfen Lied is insanely overrated?

I've still never actually seen it. I keep hearing it's amazing, but it looks kinda ghey to me.

I was going to post a big rant about why I hate it, but I'll just give you a link to a great review on Amazon that gives this garbage a sound and proper thrashing. The only thing worse than this that comes to mind immediately is Gantz.

I like Elfen Lied, but it has definitely fallen from my favorites list of anime. Basically it's like "Let's see how many dismembered bodies, nude shots, and general creepiness we can get away with! -14 episodes later- Damn, we didn't get past season 1!"

It might've worked if they decided to stick to the horror/sci-fi theme instead of turning it into a genre salad designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It's also particularly contemptible because it tries to pass itself off as being thoughtful and intellectual by throwing around references to some obscure art and literature. Problem is, that's just another ingredient in the salad. And the violence just looks comical to me because of the awful art direction; it utterly fails to unnerve or unsettle.

I must admit, you're giving me good reinforcement to keep my distance from that series.

sweatdrop I've been told by many people that I'm a very negative person. You don't have to take my word for it, hell, I'm in the vast minority. I'd just recommend you try watching an ep or two online before buying the series.

Well, since I already wasn't interested, this just adds to that.

Yeah... I only watched it cause I felt compelled by the blood.... and I saw a few episodes and never finished it. Nothing spectacular... kinda made me think of a bloodier... more graphic Love Hina... nothing more.

So far I'm not too impressed with Gungrave. The characters all have tiny heads for some reason, and the dialogue is awkward and terrible.

I feel the same way about Gungrave actually. I was watching it last night with some friends of mine and it was just like "Uhhh....when does the good part start?" I'm told it gets better along the way but it's just REALLY slow. Like molasses slow. Or a slug using dial up slow. I haven't even finished it. I've been watching Outlaw Star. Also, awkward dialogue in anime is funny to me if it's said in an over exaggerated way. Example: G-Gundam's Domon "This hand of mine glows with an awesome power. IT TELLS ME TO DEFEAT YOU. My love, my anger, AND ALL OF MY SORROW SHINING FINGER!" Okay I'm done. sweatdrop

Well I just finished Gungrave tonight. It actually comes together pretty well (though there are a lot of flashbacks in the final 2 episodes). I think the overall concept is good, but the changing physical proportions of characters and often poor dialogue are pretty distracting at times.

Awful dubs FTL. While I prefer to listen to the dialogue, sometimes subs are the only way to sit through it. And even those aren't bulletproof.

I really can understand this sentiment. There are just some dubs that just are awful to the point where even I can't watch them. It's like " gonk WTF IS THIS?" Then I end up watching the sub. Then sometimes the sub just doesn't do the series justice. Let me explain what I mean. I watched the first few episodes of Gantz in Japanese. I didn't feel anything for it. I watched some of it in English and I loved it. It was funny and not in the way I illustrated above, I mean dark humor funny. Some humor just doesn't get to me as well in the Japanese language so I watch in English.

Yeah, it all depends. Some dubs are great, others are terrible, and usually there's something of a trade-off going with one over the other. I'm happier when the dub is good enough that there's no reason to worry about it, though. I'd never dream of watching Cowboy Bebop subbed, for example.
