You start with 1000 chips in which you use to buy actions and spells and items. You can find what you can purchase in the item shop thread in the system rules forum.
Equip is something you invest your cp in to allow you to use items. For example the short sword you want to use requires an equip of 2 to use. So you would have to shift 2 cp points into equip to use it. The point behind equip is to allow you some flexibility to alter your stats with items to meet different situations. For example you could use that same 2 equip to use a shield instead and increase your defense by two. There are also some special abilities you can only get by equipping special items.
