The doctor blinked, startled by the answer. "Oh..." Clearly, this was a clinic that was more versed in dealing with the nine-month ordeal.

"Why? Is that bad?" Talon immediately demanded to know.

"Oh no, it isn't bad per-sey, it just means we'll need to do some reestimation on your due date if that's the case...." her voice was distracted as she looked to the ultrasound once more. It was only a still now as the wand had been removed shortly after Yeande had placed her hands on her belly.

"Could you give an estimation of when conception was?" she inquired, looking Talon dead in the eye and making his mind fishtail for an answer as though she'd just conversationally asked what their favorite position and brand of lube was.

"I..." his eyes shifted away from hers.

"I know you don't know the exact date, but even the month would be fine..."

Talon rifled through his memory banks for an answer, trying to remember about when Yeande's morning sickness had started and what had transpired before that...

I started getting sick in early May," Yeande said, looking towards the ceiling as her mind started to narrow down the dates. "I don't remember exactly, but it was a week or two before we found out I was pregnant... and that happened on the fourteenth of May." She looked to the screen, then to the doctor expectantly, waiting for an answer.

"Fourteenth of May..." she repeated, looking thoughtful as she did the calculation in her head. "...excuse me for a minute, won't you?"

Talon's eyes narrowed suspiciously but didn't protest as she left the room. Once she was gone, he replaced himself at Yeande's side. "Didn't think it was THAT big of a deal..." he muttered in annoyance. He was sure they'd find out one way or the other in a moment.

The doctor returned with a calculator in-hand before giving them much time to fret. "I'm sorry, I don't do math very well in my head." she told them apologetically, punching at the digits for a moment, pausing to think every so often and look back to the sonogram.

When she was finished, she looked to both Yeande and Talonfaust and took a deep breath, refixing her smile. "Well, if development continues at this rate, you could be looking at coming to term as early as three months from now." she told the pair of ijiuo

"Just three months?" Yeande's eyes went wide as she looked up at Talon, but a smile broke across her face a moment later. "Karma's gonna kill me," she said, snickering softly. "Especially after telling me all about her pregnancy in great detail." She was happy to know that it wouldn't be nine months of this... she'd been VERY grateful that the morning sickness hadn't lasted that long at all.

The blood drained from Talon's face at this. Three months? That wasn't time to do anything...!! Well...maybe to decide on a name for him, but there was so much more that needed to be done.

As though feeling the mixture of excitement and unease that had filled the room, the doctor passed Yeande the towel gently. "You can just leave it on the table when you're done with it." she told her, patting the expectant mother's shoulder. "The receptionist will handle your checkout and your follow-up appointment if you'd like to make one."

Reaching over, she pressed a button and the sonogram machine hummed before spitting out a small sheet of paper with a print-out of the baby on it which she handed to Talon. "Congratulations on your son." she added pleasantly before bustling out of the room to give them privacy to get cleaned up and discuss things while she tended to another patient.

Yeande's mind was racing, going over everything she still needed to get and needed to do. She cleaned herself up absently, still staring at the picture as she tried to wrap her mind around this concept. That was when another part of her mind piped up again. "Ice cream?" she asked, looking up at him pitifully. "I'm buying."

"Yeah..." his eyes were likewise focused on the ultrasound, managing to comprehend what she'd said somehow. "Ice cream would go down good about now..."

He had no doubt this would probably be one of the most quiet car rides he'd ever been on, sudden brakings for red lights and all.

Diary Entry
Dear Diary,
Its funny when things finally sink in for you. I'd seen the positive pregnancy test, I've watched her stomach get bigger, I've watched the mood swings happen, I was even there to see the ultrasound when they introduced me to my son.

And there was that little part of me that was still insisting that this was all a bad dream.

This morning, in the shower of all places, while I was getting ready for work, it finally occurred to me that I was going to be someone's dad. I don't know why it took this long, I especially don't know why it happened in the shower, but there you are. Nearly called in sick to work because I wanted to spend the day curled up under the covers hiding from it, but that isn't going to make it go away.

Long story short, I went to work. I ended up having to take a couple of ten-minute "time outs" in the break room after blowing my stack at a couple of morons, but they'll live. Or maybe they won't. It doesn't especially concern me either way.

I tried going over to talk to Yeande after my shift was over, but she was in a bad mood today. She's finally reached the point where she can't wear her favorite shirt anymore and, of course, its all my fault. Because, you know, I planned it this way. There's nothing I love more than being on the recieving end of a verbal beating when I least suspect it and trying desperately to come to terms with the idea of having a baby.

And I'd better do it soon, hadn't I? I'm quickly running out of time. How much longer will it be? The doctor estimated a four month pregnancy, but the baby is growing so fast...TOO fast. I never like to admit when I'm scared, but...

On the one hand, I can comfort myself with the fact that people have been doing this for millions of years. Having kids and raising them. It can't be that hard.

On the other hand, then you read the news in the paper and listen to some of these ******** I have to deal with on the phone at work yelling at their kids, and you come to realize that it certainly isn't something that just anybody can do.

I need more time, dammit.

"All right, has the program loaded, sir? Good." Talon grated out, trying not to grit his teeth. He had spent the last forty-five minutes trying to get this douchebag to perform the simple task of reinstalling his scanner so that his computer would stop freezing during startup while trying to locate it. "Now, I want you to click on full install. No. No not custom install. That would mean you have to choose what you want and don't want and--" he pounded a fist on his desk in aggravation as the customer did exactly as he'd told him not to.

"All right....all right, close that. Yes. Right now." he now knew why the people in the cubicles surrounding his kept such large bottles of tylenol handy. "Okay. Now click FULL install, and--what do you mean you don't have it anymore? No, I didn't meant to close the entire program, I just meant...don't yell at me, it isn't MY fault!"

Deep breath, Talon...

"All right, sir, hold please, while you get the program set up again and I'll be right back." he stated as calmly as he could, which still came out in a growl as he punched the button and sat there, fuming, ear and eye twitching in utter annoyance.

MORONS...!!

"Trouble again, Talon?" the ijiuo flinched and looked up guiltily at the brown-haired human standing behind him, a brow quirked curiously.

"No sir." he muttered.

"Jake." he corrected. "Don't call me sir, it makes me feel old. I don't know how many times I have to tell you that."

"Sorry." Talon said, not sounding very sorry at all.

"Well, you got him on hold this time before you blew up, that's a step in the right direction, at least." his supervisor said, shaking his head somewhat disapprovingly. "Did the hiring manager know you had these temper problems when he signed you on? Because I find it hard to believe you became disgruntled after only two weeks."

"I'm not disgruntled. I just...have a lot to think about." Talon replied defensively, to which Jake nodded again.

"Well, that's none of my business. What -is- my business, though, is that I end up having to field the calls from the people you tork off and I'm getting a little tired of it. Calling a customer a 'cuntcasket' because she couldn't open her email, Talon?"

The ijiuo's ears folded back, betraying that this statement was true. "I suppose she didn't mention the five minutes of fluent profanity that she spewed at me before I finally lost it, did she?"

"That isn't the point." Jake sighed. "When they start being abusive, hang up on them. Don't lower yourself to their level." A land landed on Talon's shoulder and he flinched in dislike. "You're a bright guy, okay? You pick up on stuff a lot more quickly than most of the people here and you're getting better at pushing calls through. But I can't keep someone in this department who's abusive to the customers."

"I'll do better, then." Talon replied grudgingly.

"Either that, or I could transfer you to the mail room. Its something to consider, anyway...you'd take a pay cut, but you wouldn't have to deal with anyone."

Talon mulled this over heavily for a brief moment. Pay cut or hordes of the great unwashed of morons? What a decision.

"I'll do better." he said again.

"Good." Jake nodded. "I'll field that call to Alice. Have you had your break yet?"

"No."

"Go have it, then." he said, making a dismissive motion with one hand as he bustled off to the next cubicle.

Talon nearly got up from his chair to retreat to the break room and sulk on the couch for the next ten minutes, but in the end, opted to remain at his station, turning to his computer. It had been awhile since he'd actually bothered with the internet. He wondered if there were any sites on how to cope with what he was dealing with. Any advice at all, at the moment, would be appreciated.

Bringing up Google, he keyed in his query and watched as the results came back. As it was, there were several essays written by various doctors, a few "first account" stories from new fathers, and, as he scrolled down the list, a site that even offered a chat room.

A chat room for fathers-to-be....what kinds of discussion went on in there, he wondered? Or had it been dominated by the mothers?

Well....one way to find out.

You are now chatting in "Expectant Father Support"

Welcome, guest!
so I guess I'm just waiting for her to come around about it and then I'll worry about names
hi guest.
hmm, a newbie.
**Guest3540783 is now known as Talon
hello all.
Never seen you here before Talon. First time?
yes.
don't be so talkative or anything. if you complain that nobody's paying you any attention with answers like that I'm going to shoot you.
daddy don't hassle the newbies.
well, I didn't mean to kill it in here.
sec pizza's here
*Rantipole01 chats up the new meat
So Talon, what's a nice macho nick like you doing in a dive like this?
Same as you, I would imagine.
don't be too sure. My wife had her baby three weeks ago, I just come here because its routine to my day anymore.
but I kid. So what's your story?
I don't know that there's much of a "story". I was under the assumption for a long time that I was sterile and apparantly I wasn't.
*Pepe winces
ouch
that means you can sue for malpractice. Lawsuit money would buy a lot of Pampers.
What do you mean malpractice?
The doctor who snipped you. That IS what you're talking about, right?
no. I mean I just thought I was sterile. My test result at my last physical came back with a nil spermcount.
...
hope you plan on taking care of that kid. He's going to grow up to be the next Jesus
LOL
thats rough though. I take it the little woman wasn't happy?
Neither of us were. We've come around about it.
Good man. That's all you can do. :)
The wife and I weren't expecting ours either. We'd just gotten back from our honeymoon when we found out and it really ******** things up for awhile.
I was banished to Couchville for a week.
that's about when he started showing up in here if I remember.
the couch was uncomfortable and the computer was right there. what would you have done :P
I don't think I really got used to the idea of being a father till the doctors handed her to me and said she was mine. and at that point, you know, its too late. You have to accept it.
lies! You can sell it to the circus.
haha.
How far along are you, Talon?
My fiance is about two months along.
ah. She's in the just starting to show/moodswings stage then?
Actually, she's been in that stage for awhile. And she's showing quite a bit.
yikes. sure you're just having one?
Unless the ultrasound is wrong.
I'm taking a stab in the dark here, but I'm guessing you guys aren't human?
no.
there you go, then. Maybe that means she's almost to term. Does she go around adjusting tiny things around the house that don't bother anyone but her?
sometimes...
yup. She's nesting.
She did that back before she was pregnant too.
....oh. Maybe not then.
the nesting stage is fun. I was amused by it when she was preggers with our first because she would sit there and sort the M&Ms in the candy dish by color. It was the cutest thing ever. I'm looking forward to it again this time. I've been buying up reeses pieces just for the occasion ;)
it occurs to me that you're too easily-amused.
But the candy dishes always look great for company!
I don't suppose any of you can tell me what the delivery is going to be like...
glutton for punishment, aintcha?
I'll let you know when I get that time machine fixed and then I can tell you in detail just exactly what yours personally will be like, Talon.
its hard to say since they're all different, Talon :/
I just want to know what to expect, aside from the TV and movie horror stories.
depends on how prepared you are. Its not some mad rush to get to the hospital if that's what you mean. That much of the movies are BS.
you should still rush to get to the hospital just to be safe, but yeah. My gf went and took a hot shower to help with the contractions while I put together an overnight bag and we still got to the hospital with plenty of time to spare.
here's a hint for you - when she says its time for the drugs, don't argue with her. Your balls will thank you.
LOL
hahaha too true
and the birth is going to turn your sweet little lady into a monster when the pain gets really bad. Don't take it personally and DON'T retort. She'll feel really bad about it after its all said and done and you don't need to make it worse.
Great...
heed this man, he's correct. Don't try to force her to eat those ice chips either. They ******** hurt when she spits them back in your eye when a contraction hits.
daddy's like the old war veteran of labors. :)
six kids, ********. I was there for all of the births.
and this is number seven?
vasectomy is the next thing on my to-do list. swear to god.
Need to go now. My break is over.
come see us again Talon
you came here during work? You're braver than I am.
bye Talon :)

Yeande
Dear Diary -

Wedding plans... I've been looking forward to this for so long. So why do I dread it coming? I look at myself in the mirror and wonder if I'll even be able to find a dress in the size 'Moby Bride'. Why do we even NEED a full wedding anyway? All I want to do is make sure that our baby doesn't have to worry about ridicule because his parents weren't married. That's not too much to ask, is it?

I really doubt that I'm going to be wanting to go through with this. I mean... it's like all of this is happening too damned fast, and I'm afraid that if we wait much longer on the wedding that we won't make it in time. I can feel the baby rolling around and kicking almost constantly now, and I think my due date is a lot sooner than what people think it is.

I think I'm just going to ask Talon if he wants to go to the Justice of the Peace and get this taken care of now, without waiting for the big 'celebration'.

Karma and Youko are going to kill us. But this isn't THEIR wedding. It's ours. And I think that this will work out much better in the long run.

Diary Entry
Dear Diary,

Wedding plans. She won't leave me alone about them and I'm getting sick of it. Not Yeande, though...its Karma. She's been riding me since about a week after the ultrasound to start finalizing things. Where's it going to be? What colors do we want? What flowers? What food? Who do we want to invite? Hell, why are you asking ME? I don't know!

I'd be just as happy going to a judge, paying the money for a license and certificate, and calling it even, but I know we can't do that. I know Yeande wants something that's some semblance of traditional because she's started looking at dresses. That means sooner or later, someone's going to be barking up my tree about looking at suits. ********. Why do we even bother with weddings anyway? It seems like such a waste of dignity and money to stand there wearing hot stuffy clothes while some guy you don't know goes on for an hour about love and holy matrimony and sacred joining.

There is nothing sacred about Yeande's and my joining, I'll say that right now. I think it lost anything sacred about it the first time we managed to figure out how to get tab A into slot B. If not, it surely did in the week following that. I never thought I'd actually miss the chafing and not being able to walk straight. But yeah, we've reached the point where that's uncomfortable for her too. I think Yeande would be happy to know that at least the misery is two-sided now. She can't wear her favorite clothes anymore and she's sworn her fiance to abstinance for the next who-knows-how-many weeks.

Meka says I can borrow from his porn stash if I like. No offense, Meka, but you wouldn't have anything that would interest me. I promise I'll come to you first the day I decide to start batting for the other team. Driven, no doubt, by the angst of sex depravation and the fact that I've gotten my a** verbally handed to me by a pregnant woman more times than I can count. You wonder just how many times a man can take that before he starts to wonder how he'd look in a dress.

HA! ....ha. No, its not funny. Not even written.

Wedding plans. Let's brainstorm.

Place - somewhere quiet, preferrably. Maybe a field or a garden someplace.
Who to invite - who CAN we invite? We don't have any outside friends and I'll be damned before I'd want any of the office monkeys there.
Colors - purple and blue would make the most sense, all the same I think we should ask for deco orange and pea green. Maybe that will shut Karma up for awhile before she asks again.
Flowers - I'm not even going to touch this one. Yeande can figure it out.
Food - something edible. Sushi would be nice. Maybe fruit. Nothing greasy.

There. I've thought about it. Now shut the ******** up, Karma.

Diary Entry
Dear Diary,

We've talked it over some more. Youko says he knows someone who wouldn't mind lending us space on his purchased plot of land to hold the wedding and its a nice out-of-the-way spot where we wouldn't have a lot of onlookers. There are flowers there, so unless Yeande has something specific in mind, we wouldn't need to supply them. I didn't realize we were working on such a limited timeframe, but Youko's made it clear that he wants us to be married before the month is over just to be safe. That gives us...s**t. Fourteen days to get all of this together.

She actually asked me today if I still loved her, even though she was "bloated and ugly" now. What are you supposed to say to that?

A. "You were more attractive before, but, I still love you. You're going to diet after the baby's born, right?"
B. "You're not fat at all. You're even more beautiful now than you were before the pregnancy and I love you all the more knowing you'll be the mother of our child."
C. Squirm uncomfortably and then say "What kind of question is that? I just woke up, for chrissake."

Every other intelligent man in the world: B 100/100 Well done! biggrin
Talonfaust: C 0/100 Please see me after class sad

At least I had the sense to avoid option A...even if she's still not talking to me at the moment. Why do I get the feeling this wedding is going to be incredibly awkward for all involved?

Yeande
Dear Diary-

That's it. I swear I'm nesting, and that means this baby is coming SOON. I've got blankets and onesies and cloth diapers for spitup rags, socks, hats, receiving blankets, books, diapers, bottles, pacifiers....

And all I want to do is make sure everything is in its place. I've been through the baby's room four times today alone, just making sure all is RIGHT in there. That's one of the first indicators.

I'm going to go get Talon now. At this point, I don't CARE what happens, I'm going to be married before today is out.

-Yeande
PostPosted: Sun Jun 19, 2005 12:57 am

Time to get married...
Once Yeande had made up her mind on something, it was nearly impossible to get her to change it. She strode across the yards, slipping in between the fence slats that the twins had removed when they were younger and moved towards Karma's house ticking off a mental checklist on her fingers. By the time she reached the door, she had a decent plan of 'attack' and waited semi-patiently for someone to answer.

The answer she was waiting for didn't come, however, as the only two people capable of answering at the moment were not readily available to do so. Karma was upstairs watching 101 Dalmations in the master bedroom with Arkie where she couldn't hear the rapping on the back door and Talon was zonked out on the couch, his sunglasses askew on the bridge of his nose and the book he'd been reading splayed over his chest.

His new job arrangement was working out well in that regard at least....now instead of spending all of his free time bitching when he was confined to the four walls of the house, he spent most of it sleeping.

Yeande reached for the knob after a few minutes, jiggling it and smiling a bit when it pushed open. She padded into the livingroom, looking around and smirking when she saw her 'intended' passed out cold on the couch. This was going to be amusing. If she hadn't looked like a raindrop on a clothesline, she might have jumped over the back of the couch to land on him... but with a few pounds of baby in the way, that was likely NOT a good option. Instead, she walked around to the front of the couch and straddled the other Ijiuo, her hands against his chest as she just STARED at him with that wry little smile that made people wonder just what the hell she was up to.

Talon gave a dischordant groan as the sudden pressure on his midsection awoke him rather abruptly. "God damn you, Arkanti, I--" he started to snarl as his eyes fluttered open. Instead of seeing the green toddler perched on him, however, he was a bit startled to see Yeande there instead.

"Oh..." his countenance instantly softened as he sat up...or sat up as much as he could with a rather pregnant woman sitting on him, anyway. "Hi there." The book had toppled, unheeded, to the floor where it shut itself front cover-up. "1,001 Names For Your Baby" it boasted. Not his idea, really, and he hated it when Karma had a good point, but he and Yeande hadn't discussed names more than in passing and he wanted to have a few in mind just in case.

"I want to get married," she said simply, sliding back until she was sitting on his lap with her legs wrapped around his waist. This put her at more or less eye level with him, and Yeande's arms reached up to drape over his shoulders. "Now."

He blinked, his face not immediately snapping into shock so much as drifting into confusion. "Now...?" he repeated blankly. "Now as in, NOW?" That couldn't possibly be what she meant, could it...? "I mean, we don't..." he groggily waved a hand absently in a random direction, gesturing at nothing in particular. "....we don't have anything. Not yet, anyway. They haven't even ordered it yet."

"Yup, now." Yeande grabbed his hand, sliding off of him and the couch and yanked him to his feet. "Don't care, c'mon let's go." This must have been one of her 'good' moods, because she was almost bouncing as she started towards the door with Talon in tow.

Somewhere along the line as she dragged him toward the door, he remembered to grab his keys. Not that this was the first time Yeande had woken him up to go fetch her something utterly ludicrous (really, who in their right mind craved Cool Whip and red grapes at two in the morning?), he just never really expected one of these routine expeditions to have been for a marriage license.

"Where are we going, exactly?" he asked as they passed through the front door and headed for the car. He hardly felt like he was dressed for the occasion...fresh off the couch, wearing his usual drab gray-and-black outfit, and probably with a bad case of bedhead to boot.

Classy.

It was a good thing, she'd determined. Youko had been driving her crazy with wedding plans, and she felt as though she'd wind up a laughingstock if she'd tried to squeeze into the dress they'd picked out. Especially because it had been white. No one was expecting her to show THIS soon, and there was no way in hell anyone would fall for the 'blushing bride' bit when it looked like she'd been pregnant for months. "This'll work out better," she said, heading for his car and finally letting go of Talon's hand.

"We're going to the courthouse. I remember hearing that they could do everything there, and it won't take that long." She paused then, glancing back to him. "Can we go grab something to eat afterward? I'm hungry."

"The courthouse...?" he gave her a mildly incredulous look as he opened his door and popped the lock on her side for her. He would have been putting up more of a fight about the suddenness of everything if it weren't for the fact that he'd already resigned himself to the fact they were getting married and the fact, also, that he was likewise sick of Youko and Karma taking over all of the planning.

Granted, he thought the whole pomp and circumstance of weddings was ridiculous, but there just seemed something very cold and impersonal about a courthouse. Hardened criminals walked through those doors...as well as probably a good deal of the customers he spoke with at work. "I think we can do a -little- better than that..." he said, getting into the car and waiting for her to do the same before putting the keys in the ignition.

"What did you have in mind?" she asked, settling into the seat and looking to him curiously. SHE didn't mind going somewhere else... it was just the first thing she'd thought of. "I mean, I doubt we can make it to Vegas and back before someone misses us... that and they'll never let me on the plane."

"Tell you what..." he told her, starting the car up and backing them out of the driveway. "Let's go find a restaurant and sit down. You get something to eat, I'll look through their phone book and we'll see what we can find."

They couldn't be the only people out there who'd gotten it into their heads that they wanted a quick and painless wedding with some degree of tradition to it that made it feel moreso like they'd gotten married and not like they'd just signed a contract guaranteeing them shared benefits and tax breaks. This WAS Gaia...land of the once-thought-impossible. -They- were here, after all, weren't they?

Sure, he would have been happy with that in the beginning, but after all of the resignation and psyching up he'd put himself through over the weeks, Talon at least wanted it to feel like he'd done it for a reason.

"Okay," she replied, grinning as she leaned sideways in the seat and rested her head against his shoulder. "I love you, you realise..." she whispered, content for what seemed like the first time in ages. Between the mood swings, cravings, discomfort and just plain wanting this OVER with, she'd had little enough to be content with over the past weeks. "Whatever you decide is fine with me."

"I love you too." he told her, giving her head a token and absent nuzzle with his own, but unable to linger as he was watching the road. That and he kept expecting her to lapse out of her good mood and bite his head off about something.

It didn't take much, he'd learned...saying the wrong thing, doing the wrong thing, looking at her funny (he had to be told he was looking at her funny because he never meant to be doing it). All of them somehow led back to the idea that he didn't think she was pretty anymore and was going to leave her as soon as something better came along. For awhile, he'd made it his pet project to translate the phrase "That's ridiculous, you know I'd never do that" into every currently-used language there was and present her with the pages the next time the argument came up, but wisely decided against it.

"...but don't leave it all up to me. I have this knack, you see, for not being well-informed." saying so, he reached out and gently brushed a hand over the bulge of her belly.

Yeande just snorted softly, slanting her gaze to the side. "Like I'm any more well-informed than you are? This was just as much a shock to me as to you." She didn't seem upset though, and settled so that she was leaning against him gently. She was content to stay that way until they reached the restaurant, her eyes half closing as she started thinking about the baby again... and how much she still had to DO to make the nursery ready.

The parking lot was fairly empty as the lunch crowd was just leaving and the dinner vultures wouldn't be settling in for another couple of hours...that meant less people to look at him like he was an inconsiderate jackass for sitting at their table with a phone book and a cel phone systematically calling numbers.

As though reading her mind as he put them in a space and killed the engine, Talon looked to Yeande, his brow furrowing a bit. "....do we even have a name yet?" he inquired. He didn't want to just assume she'd name the baby and then find out she'd been doing the same for him. He likewise didn't want to decide on a name he liked only to find out she'd settled on something completely different.

Yeande frowned for a moment, leaning into the passenger seat and staring towards the glass. "I like the name Alexander..." she started, then looked to him with a brow raised as if wondering what his opinion on it was. She hated coming up with names... she'd used all the good ones on Pixas.

Talon didn't say anything....not immediately, anyway. Alexander wasn't a bad name, he supposed...but....it really wasn't what he'd had in mind. Neither he nor Yeande had traditional names, after all...hell, hardly anyone in Gaia did. Someone named Alexander was just as likely to stick out here as someone on earth named Galstaff was likely to stick out.

"I like it." he said quickly, not wanting the pause to linger too terribly long. "I like it, I just..." he trailed off, wondering what the best way to explain his previous thoughts to her were. In the end, he decided not to...there was simply no way he could without making it sound like she had picked a bad name.

"I like Zhane, myself." he offered lamely. Granted, he'd found it in the girl's section of the book with an accent on it and with a more feminine pronounciation of zee-ah-nee, but when pronounced the way he'd initially read it, zayne, it sounded more appealing.

"Zhane..." she murmured, as if feeling how the name sounded coming from her lips. "I like that." Grinning, she turned and looked to him as one hand came to rest on her stomach. "Zhane Alexander?" she asked, one brow lifted. It sounded good to her... and definately fit the description of the 'three name warning' that she heard Youko talk about often enough. That was when a parent started off calling the first name of the child... then went to first and middle name when no answer was gotten. If the parent made it to calling all THREE names, an a**-beating was going to ensue.

His eyes darted to the side in thought as he mulled the name over in his head. Zhane Alexander. Zhane Alexander Breslin. The three names, actually, worked well together. It was just offbeat enough to be unique without being obnoxious and it was a name that, god forbid, would look good on a college diploma someday.

"I can live with that." he said at last, leaning in to kiss her before fumbling open his door and stepping out.

Grinning, Yeande moved to get out as well, happy that at least one aspect of this ordeal had been solved. Now all that remained was for them to get married! Youko was going to kill her, she just knew it... but it would be worth it. THIS was what she wanted, after all.

Yeande

Zhane Breslin

Till Death Do Us Part
It had been hard figuring out where exactly to look in the phone book for wedding services, but after much fumbling, Talon had managed to find a short listing of chapels and services scattered in amid the sea of caterers, decorators, insurance companies, and divorce lawyers.

Of those chapels, only two performed small ceremonies upon request and only one was within reach on a single tank of gas. So it was there that Talon and Yeande had planned to go. As an afterthought, they had stopped at a secondhand store to seek out slightly more formal attire before continuing on their way.

Getting out of the car, Talon paused, his eyes crawling over the small white building inquisitively. It wasn't anything special...just a tiny out-of-the-way church, but it was certainly better than the courthouse. A certain foreboding stole over him as he realized just how big a step they were about to take.

Sliding out of the passenger seat, Yeande kept one hand on her belly, smoothing hte pale fabric of her dress over the prominent bulge there. She frowned faintly, looking to Talon in hesitation. It wasn't because she was having second thoughts... it was because inwardly, she wondered just what the 'priest' was going to think of her condition. No one would likely believe that this marriage was anything other than convenience, no matter how they really felt about each other.

He was still for a moment more before putting an arm around her waist and starting forward. "Let's go." he murmured. The changes of this were going to be immediate, he reminded himself....they were going in engaged and coming out husband and wife. If he thought about it for too long, it boggled his mind...and so the simple solution, of course, was NOT to think of it.

The front door opened without sound when he pushed on it, sending a breath of cool air washing over the two of them and a cloying floral smell. The sensation and scent, however, were the only immediate greeting they recieved as the front hallway seemed deserted.

"Is anyone even here?" she asked, looking around as she moved a step closer to Talon and let her arm drape around his waist. The place looked imposing, even though it was obviously something that had been thrown together to look like a larger church in a much smaller space. The piped-in music was soft in the background, the organ tones filtering through the entry hall almost too softly to truly be heard.

"This must be what its like in a funeral parlor..." Talon remarked sourly, his eyes shifting back to the door. He suddenly wanted nothing more than to be out of this place and breathing fresh air again. Not only that, but the suit he'd picked out was driving him insane...the collar picked at his neck, it was too tight in the chest, and too loose in the inseams.

"Maybe we should just--" he began.

"May I help you?" an elderly voice inquired to their left. So caught up had they been in surveying the place, they hadn't noticed as one of the hallway doors had opened and an old man with salt-and-pepper hair wearing a trim charcoal suit had stepped out to regard them both with a curious, but kindly, expression.

As soon as Talon started to sound like he was getting cold feet, Yeande tightened her hold on his arm, determined to use a net if needs be. When the other man spoke, it startled her enough to jump, the Ijiuo instinctively stepping closer to Talon and turning to regard the older man curiously. "Hello," she began, clearing her throat softly. "We... we would like to get married?" It wasn't until after she spoke that she wanted to slap her own forehead. Of COURSE they wanted to get married. People didn't come into a chapel just to get pictures taken with flowers.

The old man did not comment, he merely smiled and reopened the door he'd just come out of, making a sweeping gesture into the room with one hand. "Right this way." he gently instructed.

"...just like that?" Talon asked, quirking a brow at him as though it couldn't be that easy.

"There will be papers to sign, of course, sir, but we can look at those afterward. You could even take some of them home to be mailed in later if you like." His expression never wavered...it was as though this place was perfectly used to accomodating people who showed up out of the blue demanding a wedding. Then again, at the rate couples formed and broke up in Gaia, Talon supposed he shouldn't have been surprised.

Reluctantly, he started forward into the indicated room.

Yeande was a bit more eager, stepping in before Talon did and smiling as she looked around the small chapel. It was beautiful... and not nearly as intimidating as a real church seemed to be. It felt cozy, and she was suddenly very glad that Talon had suggested this, it was a much better place than a courthouse. "I can't believe we're really doing this," she whispered, nearly giddy as they walked into the chapel.

Talon said nothing, his eyes crawling over the room. It WAS pretty....it lacked the benches and large echoing acoustics of a normal church and was simply a thinly-carpeted room with an alter and vases of yellow, white, lavendar, and pale blue flowers arranged in a decorative manner.

The minister was already taking his place behind the alter, shuffling papers and leafing through a well-worn book before looking up at them, his eyes wordlessly asking them if they were going to join him.

"Do you have the rings?" he asked in a hushed tone of voice as they approached, his eyes looking from Talon to Yeande expectantly. Talon felt his heart sink. Rings. In all of the rush, they'd forgotten what was likely one of the most symbolic parts of the entire thing. Stupid...!!

"If you like..." the old man offered, taking the pause as a 'no' "...we have simple bands that can be added onto the fee of the license and ceremony for sixty dollars more. Not only were they used to dealing with impromptu weddings, apparantly, they were used to dealing with poorly-planned impromptu weddings.

Yeande looked to Talon, nodding softly as if giving her assent, at least. They DID need rings, after all. "We can get permanent ones later, right?"

Talon wasn't sure if she was talking to him or talking to the minister, but answered anyway. "Right." he said, his tail giving a single spastic flick through the air. "Okay."

The minister smiled and fetched a pen off of the edge of the alter. "And your names?"

"I gave them over the phone. Talonfaust Breslin and Yeande?" he replied, shifting his weight nervously.

"I'm afraid I wasn't the one who took your call." the minister said apologetically. "Spell them, please?"

Trying not to roll his eyes, Talon spelled out both of their names for him as the old man jotted them down neatly and then excused himself from the room briefly. When he returned, he was carrying a pair of thin gold bands which he set on the edge of the alter within easy reach. Satisfied all was in order, he smoothed the pages of the book and straightened himself up. "Are we ready?"

The ijiuo looked to his partner as though it was up to her whether they were ready or not.

Yeande had elbowed him less-than-gently at the agitated tone in his voice, and was now standing and facing the minister with a soft smile. Inside, she was nervous as hell, but she wasn't going to let that stop her. "We're ready," she said, the only hint at her internal state being the twitching of her tail and wings.

Clearing his throat, he began, his voice raising from the hushed murmur it had been to a slightly louder-than-normal volume as he gave the opening prayer.

"Today, as your two hearts unite, may the Lord enter into your holy union and consecrate the love that brings you here.

And may you build together a lasting home, not of wood and stone and glass, but a mansion made of many rooms, filled with shared experience and furnished with shared love.

And in your house of many rooms, remember to keep a place apart for thinking private thoughts, and dreaming private dreams; a place where each of you can grow and share a private you in contemplation and prayer.

And from this day until forever may the Lord remain with you always, to keep your love eternally young, and your faith forever strong."

He paused, then, a heavy silence falling over the room before he continued.

"Do you, Talonfaust, take Yeande as your partner in life, to trust, to love, in tears and joy, faithfully through all hardships and obstacles until death do you part?"

He'd heard variations of the words in all manner of movies and television shows and he knew well what the answer was supposed to be. But up until now, he'd never actually listened to them before. He was being asked to make one of the most important promises of his life...one that he was not allowed to break for any reason.

Clasping Yeande's hands in his own, his palms feeling slightly clammy to the touch, he drew in a deep breath and let it out again. "I do." he said quietly as the minister's eyes settled themselves on Yeande.

"And do you, Yeande, take Talonfaust as your partner in life, to trust, to love, in tears and joy, faithfully through all hardships and obstacles until death do you part?"

Yeande's voice was barely audible as she kept her eyes locked to Talon's. Her hands tightened slightly around his own as her lips quirked upward in a faint smile. "I do," she whispered, nearly vibrating in place where she stood. The words of the ceremony had affected her as well, the Ijiuo feeling as though her heart were pounding in her chest. This wasn't a dream anymore... it was real, it was happening... and she'd just agreed to stay with Talon for the rest of their days, however long that may be. "I do," she said again finally, this time her voice easily heard.

Talon returned her smile...just as faint, just as thin, but present. For one moment, he'd almost been sure she would have second thoughts...it was a crazy notion, of course, considering this had been her idea and that he'd never known her to back down from something in her life, but it had been there, all the same.

"The rings..." the minister said softly, offering them out to them as Talon snapped himself out of the momentary trance to accept one of the bands and gently slide it onto Yeande's left ring finger.

Yeande reached for the other ring as well, admiring the gleam of gold against her finger before moving to slide its mate onto Talon's left hand. For a moment, she let her hand rest over his, watching the way the light played on the twin bands for a moment. That sight was what finally did it... and when she looked back up to him again, Yeande had tears glistening in her eyes, her grasp trembling as she held onto him.

The faint smile faltered as Talon noted the unnatural shimmer in her eyes and the falter in her hands. He wasn't sure if they were symptoms of joy or of remorse, and hoped desperately for the former. The ceremony hadn't even been officially closed yet and yet they'd already made the committment...it was done.

"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife." the minister stated, sweeping the book closed and looking up at the two of them with a broad approving smile. "You may kiss the bride."

There was no hesitation as Talon leaned in, pressing his mouth warmly against hers.

The first kiss was tentative... almost as though she couldn't quite believe this was happening. They had only parted for a moment, however, before Yeande pounced at him, winding her arms around his shoulders and sealing a second, deeper kiss against his lips.

The second kiss took him offguard, but he recovered quickly from the shock to gather her tightly against him. Talon wasn't quite sure how he felt at the moment...relieved that it was over with, happy that they had made such a commitment to one another, or apprehensive about whether things would really work out or not.

Whatever the case, things had now officially changed yet again. It was going to take him awhile to get used to referring to Yeande as his wife.
