Alright. Where do I begin? What you, and by this, I mean everyone who has posted here, are all mainly describing, is a world in which I am constantly immersed in, and it is NOT something I enjoy.

It is this atmosphere, this "saying your Jewish" that leaves me sad and a little angry. All last year I had to watch a kid in my school who wore a Kippa during lunch, give in to pressure and start making fun of his heritage. You know what he did? People would toss quarters on the ground and he would literally dive head-first into the floor to get them. He did it, he said, "Because he was a Jew."

It is this atmosphere, where I am laughed at because I want to go to Shul every Shabbat evening and cry when I can't go due to mandatory chorus rehearsals.

It makes me livid, when I hear the people I know are Jewish in my school make fun of their religion. In my book, "Just because you're a Jew" doesn't make it "alright" to tell anti-semetic jokes.

There has been a lot of focus, in this topic, on the Jews who claim to be Jewish and yet they don't go to Shul, or they don't follow the Torah, or that they go to Church too. But one thing I want to bring up are the kids who I've been in Hebrew School with all my years and yet they don't get anything out of it. They are there because their parents want them to. All they do is sit and complain about how "boring" discussing what certain passages of the Torah are about. I mean, my GOSH if you won't respect your religion, don't disrespect it in the synogauge, and if you dislike it, DON'T COME.

Sorry if this has seemed mean, I just get miffed when I come across people like that. Oh, and don't get me wrong, not ALL the Jews where I live are like that. Two of my best friends are usually sitting right next to me in Shul as often as we can go and welove to listen to our Rabbi and discuss the portions. There are just some other kids around where I live... well, I've already explained the situation. Eheh. Alright, I'm done with my little rant. You can all come out from hiding now! XD

No, you make a lot of sense, and I agree. I really hate this kid who goes to my school, who makes his Judaism into some kind of a symbol that he can mock- anybody who knows him knows he is Jewish, and sees how he is. They thus base their judgements off of him, which I don't like as well.

Very well said. 3nodding
do you ever find something so tragically ironic you don't know whether to laugh or cry?

what do yousay about this shirt? i <3 it personally... i don't think it's meant to insult jews... i am trying to get one of those, and i am sure i will in my next visit in jerusalem...

here in israel, or in my school to be more exact, people are or jews or Atheists, but we try to respect any opinion...

one thing i didn't like for example is a teacher saying "the Atheists kids here are good people, but if they were jews they would be much better". i can't see how is that... each religion should be respected... i am personally jew but i won't go and try to convience people to be jews... its my own belief... alot of people also are both jews and Atheists cause their nation is jewish and their religion is Atheism...

i have Atheist friends, they know enough to say "i am not jew" and i appriciate them for that, they though know perfectly why they aare not jews, and know more about judism than i do...

so i guess i didn't get to any situation like that...

I have that shirt! People know me as Jewish Josh and that's fine with me. I am an observant Jew and also do know people who say that are Jewish but definitely aren't. It is really annoying.

Ehh....Unfortunately, I must respectfully disagree. It's perfectly fine to be proud of your religion, but to broadcast it to the world in such a way is reminiscent to me of showing off. Don't get me wrong- I'm proud to be a Jew, but I dislike the idea of Jews thinking we're so much better then everybody else.

Plus, it reminds me of this idiotic kid here who calls himself "Jewperman" and goes around thinking he's amazing, as well as just being an insult to Jews in general.

Anyway, I just don't really understand the point, I guess. sweatdrop

one if there mother is not jewish or they did not convert (mikvah and circumcised as wells as acceptance of the mitvot (if you are orthodox)) or there mother did not convert before they were concieved, then techniqally they are not jewish. i would consider one who is striving to become more jewish either through conversion or baal tesuvah/ baalas tesuvah, to be a jew. now people who have ethinicity through their mother but are non practicing (to the point of complete ignorance) and/or are "messianic" are jewish but are Jews who are failing in their obligation to their people and their God. non-jews can do as they please, be any religion or none at all so long as they follow noahchide laws but not a jew. a Jew is differant and is obligated to the mitvot given to them by God, and to completly shirk these obligations (not just being minorly observent but completely oblivious to commandments) knowingly or out of apathetic ignorance is a failing in their duty as a Jew, one who has been givien the opportunity to be differant, to be a better person. Jews should always be aware that we have more expectations placed on us and that we are being held to higher stands. non-jews can do as they please but we cannot. this does not mean that we are better than gentiles, just that we are supposed to and obligated by God to be Ethical and moral in ALL that we do. we even though we live in clipah we cannot become what we see around us, rather we are command to change it, to make it better tahn we found it and to show everyone who isn't jewish, how to do the same. TIKKUN OLAM! this is the lot of the jewish people. by the way, judiasm is best described as a civilization, because while we are an ethinicity, we are not exactly a race, also we are a religion, a culture and a people.

and as far as "messianic" jews are concerned. if they have no jewish mother THEY ARE NOT JEWS. if they do it they are commiting idolatry. end of story.

B'shalom!

GAH; something made me very upset this week. I was walking down the hallway of my school, and I see this kid loaning money to another kid, and he says, "Just to let you know; I charge interest- I'm Jewish."

stressed People like that give a bad name to Jews; and others wonder why stereotypes stick around so strongly. stare

If I were you, I would have slapped the money out of his hand and said,"Listen here buddy, you should be proud of your hertiage, not flaunt the stereotypes by being stupid!" and then school him on the laws against interest.

Then tug him by the ear down the hallway, and give him a spanking in the lunch room. 3nodding

i know people that are very similar to example one and three. it gets really annoying, to be honest. but i usually just bite my tongue.
if it was example two, however, i'd have no problem bitching them out.

Well, as a Hiloni (חילוני), it is kind of hard for me to judge who can be called jewish and who can't.
But I think my case is a bit different- I live in a society that the Judaism is kind of obvious.
For me, being Jewish means being Israeli. Speaking hebrew, serving in the IDF... etc. Of course, I did have a bar mitzva, i celebrate the jewish holidays, and I went to a synagouge (how the hell do you spell that word?) a couple of times in my life.
Even though I do not wear a Kipa on a daily base, I still see myself as a jew just like any other jew.
