The espers are a definite similarity. Summons = Guardian Forces = Summon Materia = Magicite
Interestingly enough, it used to be that something was needed to summon creatures; a piece of magicite or materia. Eventually, the spirits began bonding with creatures, and after a while only select individuals could become Summoners. Classes became so loosely defined after about FF V that I find it interesting that Summoner seems to be an actual class. I wonder if the two are connected?
And before Summonings, Shiva and Ifrit, among others, were Gods. Interesting to follow the evolution, no? Especially since Kefka set himself up as a god, and FF VI was (I think...) the first game that you could summon in (Actually... there were Callers in FF IV. But I don't remember Calling being the same as Summoning.); it could be that the gods were weakened, and lost their invincibility as people lost faith. The Goddess Shiva, if memory serves me, was imprisoned in a castle basement in FF V, was she not? Espers, then, would be the Gods Shiva, Ramu, Kirin, Ifrit, Bahamut, Tritoch, Siren (any of these names sound familiar?) and many others. They sealed themselves away, but lost power when Kefka gained divinity. And by FF X, when they are hardly more than pets to be called upon at need, they have been further weakened by a monotheistic religion, that of Yevon. In fact, they have been absorbed by Yevon into sort of Saints, relics of the church. I like how the Fayth become less tame as they progress, with the first being friendly, stopping to be pet before battle, and by the time you reach Shiva and Bahamut they're not quite so nice anymore. Yuna looks positively nervous.
Hey! It's strikingly similar to what happened when polytheism was beaten down and fazed out by Judaism/ Islam/Catholocism/Christianity, where the old gods were denounced, imprisoned, and eventually integrated into the monotheistic religions! eek I'm going to start a thread now!
Yes... I get waay too into this stuff. The sad part is, I came up with this theory while I was writing it. Just now. sweatdrop
