And for the sake of randomness: Have you ever wondered why there are two knives near your plate in those fancy restaurants? One of them is for eating... and the other is for... YARGH!!! DEFENDING YOUR PLATE...
domokun !!!!! ::stabs incoming hands::
note that when this happens, there are usually additional forks and spoons as well. allow me to elucidate:
much of human society is based on our own physical proportions. the base-10 number system, for example, exists as that particular number for no other apparent reason than that the primary human counting instrument, ie the fingers, are found in quantities of 10. even the relative size of nearly all manufactured product is heavily influenced by what we consider to be normal.
any variation from this norm, be it so slight, results in much difficulty, and even inability in surviving in this so manipulated world. a midget would be hard-pressed to reach the upper shelves of a shopping isle, and a giant would be rather frustrated when shopping for shoes.
therefore, in light of this, we can expect most eating establishments to cater to the vast majority, and the vast majority use but 1 fork, spoon, and knife. however, there are those more select restaurants who rely on tending to each customer, and caring for his or her individual needs. these restaurants are quite expensive, and thus exclusive, and they can hardly afford to turn away a single patron.
therefore, one may deduce what appears to be what is only logical.
regular people, who have but 2 hands, use but one fork, one spoon, and
one knife. people with 4 hands, therefore, use 2 of each.
