Our band director gets mad if we DON'T tap our foot. It really helps out when you tap your foot. It's useful when you're playing 6/8 in 2. Or in cut time.
I've tapped my foot ever since I started band 4 years ago. My teacher in 5th grade was all like, "No. Stop tapping your foot!" But...
The only thing is that we can't tap our feet when we play on stage, like at state band festival, because we're in an auditortium and the sound of your feet is really loud. Then we just bounce our heels. <3
I say that you just keep tapping your foot regardless of what he says!

Back when I started playing trombone 2 years ago, I ALWAYS had to tap my foot, or I wouldn't pass my passoffs. Because of that, I always tap my foot, whether the band has to or not. I do it so I stay in tempo, but sometimes...I get lost. xd

It drives my band director insane when we all do it stomping style but he agrees that it is a good method to keep time and subdivide.

All thru-out middle school, we were encouraged to tap our feet. In high school, it's generally best to either count in your head, or just tap your toes (something unnoticable) which is what I do

I don't normally tap my feet and I don't know why. My BD doesn't really care if you tap your foot or not. Thought when I did my playing audition for concert band he suggested I tap my foot so I wouldn't pause in the music. I was nevous when playing my audition.

I mostly don't have to, although I still do from time to time just 'cuz. Besides, it wouldn't do much good since my director can barely keep time herself and she gets angry when you don't follow her anyway... But if tapping your foot/toe helps you out, and your director can keep a steady tempo, go for it.

I do. Since I'm in the front with the little kids (ya I'm that short sweatdrop .The are like grade fives I think........... ) I always have to to keep tempo. It drives me mental that they are always off. Th eone on my right is singing two fast and teh one on my left is singing too slow. whee (yes i'm regrading choir. Sometimes I have to do the same during piano and such.)

Our stage is hollow so when we tap our feet it echos almost as loud as the songs themselves... Our BD said to either tap your heals or inside your shoe... I tap my toes lightly inside me shoe... though my friend (and its hilarious to watch cause she doesnt know she does it) rocks back and forth and not even in time XD I dont know how she keeps time like that
although I dont tap my toe for time... its mostly habit... my time is kept by the baton our BD uses, which I can see looking at my music or not..

I never tap my feet. It happened once I started playing strings. It's pretty strange. It feels so natural to tap your foot when playing a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument, but so uncomfortable when playing a string. Probably because your arm moves too.

The only reason I have a problem with foot-tapping is that there's a guy in our school band who does it all the time, and very off-beat with the music >.< . Other than that, I do it all the time in practices, but I personally think it looks very unprofessional to do it while onstage, so I don't like it when people do it in concerts. I'm stuck up that way mrgreen .
