Silly question, I know, but if somebody wouldn't mind answering it: sweatdrop

Where would somebody learn how to write all of that? And what kind of training would they have to go through?
how isn't very hard at all. it's just caligraphy, albeit extremely delicate. my father's currently writing (sofing?) a megillas esther.

it's the skill, expenses, and time that are difficult. a sefer torah uses about 100 yards of parchment, cut into (usually) about 2'x2.5' pieces. that's alot of cow.
also, it's a matter of personal devotion for the sofer (scribe). case in point: tefillah before inscribing the Shem

It's very nerve weaking for people with short fuses. It's even harder than building a castle with matchsticks xd .

I studied shodo, Japanese calligraphy, and I was so bad at THAT that I can't imagine trying to learn the Hebrew calligraphy well enough write a sefer Torah.

I'd imagine it's very, very delicate work.. But it's a great kiddush Hashem to do..

i dunno. sure, it takes alot of skill, but one can train oneself. unless someone has add/adhd, i don't see why they can't do it, if they want to put the time and effort in, and even then.

You need the motivation, you need to know the halahas... There's more than just writing involved... Not just any person can decide he wants to write a sefer torah... sweatdrop

does anyone here know how to read from the torah??
PostPosted: Mon Aug 14, 2006 8:37 am

I've heard of mishna, but not gamara, or what you called it.

I read from the Torah for my bat mitzvah, because my temple is reform. I have to say, it was really hard work.
