RoseRose Zonko, you and nathan, and maybe some others, should create like... a vocabulary list of words you guys use a lot and consider important. I know some, but not well enough to define them. You know, create a JGG dictionary of religious-related words or something? Like "posek" and "heter" and "assur". I'd hope everyone would know "rav", but it'd probably be a good idea to put that there, too. *shrug* I've run into "Jews" who've never heard of Passover. We need a basic tutorial on words you guys use to explain things! I followed that conversation... darkphoenix probably did, too... but, who all didn't? In my opinion, more knowledge is good. And on that note, is it okay for a man to teach a woman Talmud? I'm thinking of asking the Chabad rabbi to teach me a bit. I know I can't learn it all, but... I'm taking biblical hebrew this year in college, and I want to learn some. it's certainly not accepted for women to learn gemara (that counts for alot. torah lo b'shemayim hi). although they don't have the obligation that men do (technically, every waking moment), i'm not sure if it's outright forbidden. but it's stupid. there are just so much more important things. but, then again, i'm sure you're rabbi knows more than i do.

That doesn't make much sense... My sister (Esther) learns Toshb"a at her school (Ulpenat Segula). Maybe not serious gemmara like we do, but they toutch lightly upon the form and origion of it. I see no reason why she can't do it herself 3nodding . There is definately not a prohibition, but there are things that it is more preferable for the woman to study than Gemara. Like Zonko said, we probably know less than your rabbi, so what he says, goes 3nodding .

I guess I'll move this thread to the new subforum, if nobody has any objections? If so, feel free to say so: it's quite easy to move threads between subforums. 3nodding

It'll be stupid to try, not because it isn't good to know them, but because it'll be better to learn HOW to do them, first.

You're probably talking about the rotzeah bishgaga. Someone that killed unintentionally, the family members of the victim can kill him if he doesn't reach shelter in time.

ok, so i actually took the time to check up the whole "women and learning torah issue"..... xp
the single most important difference between men and women concerning learning torah is that men have an obligation to do so "all the days and nights of your life", whereas women have no such chiuv (obligation-responsibility). now, since there is greater schus (merit, reward) in doing something one is obligated to do, rather than something one is putar (negation of chiuv (both are possesive forms, if anyone cares)) from (a classic example is the debate in gemara whether it is more meritous for a child to do something his father asked him to do, or do that same thing without his father's asking. the conclusion follows the former.), and women are chiav in many other things, those other things take precedence over learning torah. men, however, are obligated to study torah in one way or another every second of their waking lives (there's a fun gemara on that). so, in essence, it isn't that women shouldn't be learning torah, it's that, for them at least, there are other things more important.
aside from that, the only thing against women learning torah (and by "learning torah", i mean studying gemara, torah sh'baal peh and related topics, which require quite a bit of time. in fact, in more orthadox circles of education, girls are taught a considerable amount of written torah, but nevertheless not gemara, etc) is the fact that it's not really the "minhag sh'b'klal yisroel", meaning, it's not really the tradition of the nation as a whole.
in conclusion, all above is an elaboration of what i already stated, with the exception of the clarification of what "learning torah" means in this context.
for questions and assistance, consult your local orthadox rabbi.

Nope, that's only in Islam, and a pilgrage to Mecca called a Haj. The people who make the journey are consequently called Haji.
Amazing what AP Euro does to your brain! xp

THEN I'D GIVE THEM ALL COOKIES! 4laugh " Anywho I was like all snappy that day and i was like "No they don't you dumb a**, they are just reccomended to go." Then I almost added "Like I recomend you to get an education" lol but I didn't say that.
