Music History Babbling: The right hand also mutes the sound. Horns were rarely used in ensembles for anything but fanfares or hunting calls (they drowned out non-brass instruments) until someone discovered that you could soften the tone by putting your hand in the bell. Only later did someone (Anton Hampel) figure out that you could also change the pitch that way. Ever seen pictures of old horns? They're not as twisted up like crazy as modern ones are, because they used tubing extensions called crooks. http://www.rjmartz.com/horns/tabard/tabard.htm sweatdrop

yeah, the whole hand thing is so your notes are accurate, not sharp, not flat. people say that spit sometimes falls on your hand from it being in there but thats not true, thats what spit valves are for. and if you dont have a spit valve, just take the mouthpiece off and tip it over so the spit comes out (icky)

They have all those slides and whatnot...

My double horn has six slides coming off the keys and three tuning slides. I think that's about the normal number. So that's nine peices plus the horn. At the moment, my horn is dissembled and lying in the bathtub soaking.
