Quote:
The bronze hatchling clearly wasn't in a rush to go anywhere. He lounged in the sand without a care in the world, unconcerned or unaware that the largest egg hatching out a bronze was something of a complication. It seemed that nothing was going to spur the dragon into action, until he slowly lifted his head and let out a long, low, call. As the call went on, Joscelin would begin to feel a presence, as though something large and lumbering were coming up alongside him.

Joscelin. A drawling voice entered the lad's mind as the bronze's head flopped down. Slowly whirling, rainbow, eyes meet Joscelin's and the presence thumps down in his mind. A heavy and warm blanket covering and mingling with his own consciousness. Flueth begins to, very slowly, get to his feet and Joscelin can feel something akin to exasperation from the bronze. Apparently we need to go now. I don't know why they're all so flustered. I knew you were there, I was just enjoying the warmth. Flueth stands and waits for Joscelin to come to him. It's not all bad I suppose. At least now I can eat.

Ooh that ... that was much more different then Quill. It was lazy, warm, and heavy and the faintest hit of annoyance tinging through the words. It layered and was rather soothing all told. J'in replied, slowly walking out of the mass of candidates to the bronze sprawled out in the clutch of shells and the lighting egg.

Little one you needed to hatch and soon. He thought faintly and blinked as one of the candidates made a run for it. He trailed off, unsure about the egg or even asking Flueth about it.

Flueth replied, sprawling out in the hot sands, lazing out and curling slightly. Come and cuddle.

J'in approached and slowly touched Flueth, running fingers over the soft skin warm skin and settled in close to the bronze. "Are you okay?" He asked quietly, looking at Vee, unsure.

Deldowth looked at his clutch mate, Necreoth, and sighed. How could any one rider or dragon understand the weight of Pern? Sure, he was out of his shell but others hadn't been so lucky and now, now everyone was sad that there wasn't another gold among them. He almost had dragon tears. You be happy enough for both of us. Iskosian knows that he can be happy for me as well. I shall probably not feel good after all of this is over and done.

Iskosian shrugged at Cai. He hadn't talked to the other candidate but he wasn't going to be rude now that they were all riders together. In this strange predicament of having the weight of the remaining Weyrs on their shoulders. "Congratulations. Don't mind Deldowth. It seems he is the pessimist type."

Realistic. I understand what people expected and none of us have met those expectations... Oh look, the bronze is doing something. I think he found his rider. Deldowth looked back at the Sands as someone stepped forward towards the bronze. Good for them I suppose.

What was that girl doing?

As the candidate broke out of the ranks not to greet a dragon but to press her hands against the remaining unhatched egg D'lana shot to her feet with her hands clenched by her sides. If this were her Weyr.... But it wasn't and though she might still have intervened at another time, in another life, she didn't have enough audacity to do anything until Masalth had reacted. If these were the gold's last moments the least anyone could do was let her decide how they went.

Of course if Masalth indicated that she wanted the girl removed D'lana would be only too glad to jump down onto the sands and haul her away personally, the nerve!

Nacreoth's demeanor towards Deldowth cooled, oh he understood the weight of Pern well. He understood it's nuances and weaknesses even better.
Nacreoth narrowed his eyes slightly. Your considerable energies and strength would be better spent bent towards something you can change, rather than moping over the inevitable.

The blue's expression was mirrored in Cai's face as he listened to half the conversation. While he couldn't hear what Deldowth was saying, he could fairly glean the gist of it from their body language and Nacreoth's replies. He looked up as Iskosian shrugged. "Considering that this is likely the last clutch the north will see? Pessimism isn't all that surprising." Though Cai was with Nacreoth on this one... the pity party the brown seemed to be throwing was excessive and frankly... annoying.

Nacreoth turned his attention back towards the sands as the bronze finally made his choice. His interest in the newly formed pair was short lived as a candidate rushed towards the last egg. The whirling of Nacreoth's eyes accelerated and the blue sat up straighter, eyes locked to the girl's back.

Cai rubbed the back of his neck as the prickling there grew intense under Nacreoths focus. What the... "Shaffing dimglow." Cai muttered. Even if Malsalth was dying, she was still mother of the clutch and the same instinct that kept her here well past her time made her a threat to anyone who messed with her eggs. No hatchlings may be on the sand, the egg may be a dud but as long as she still lived, the girl was an idiot.

E'dal jumped up when he saw Vee rush towards what appeared to be the last unhatched egg. All around him, other candidates were either caught up in conversation or staring as well. What was she doing?? Would she force the shell to crack.

Personally, he was torn. As a weyr brat, the regard he had for dragon's and for the eggs was huge. She could damage the dragon... Could one even force an Impression? He wasn't sure. E'dal looked to see what the others were doing and noticed several older riders on their feet, faces with mixed emotions. It was just as well that he was at the tables and not in the stands. He probably would be shouting his dismay.

But what if? What if Vee caused the egg to hatch and it was a gold? Even a runt would be good if taken care of and grown. If she Impressed, the North was saved. E'dal could almost see Vee making the Impression to a gold and leading them back. He rubbed Wanjouth's head.

Oh my! I don't know if that one wants to be taken out but it would be nice to meet her. The little green turned to watch, eyes whirling with curiosity. Her belly was full and she had been delighted to watch more of her clutch mates find their riders. Do you think she will make it hatch?

"I don't know. We'll have to wait and see, won't we?" E'dal replied.

Her gaze had been on her bronze child when Malsalth was alerted to a disturbance. The gold looked up and caught sight of the girl running for her eggs. Voices all around called out in protest. Humans surged to their feet, disgusted by someone's disrespect for dragonkind. Dragons roared from their ledges, wings spread and tails lashing at the perceived threat to the youngest of their number. Malsalth's head tracked the candidate as she ran forward, the humming stilling in the dragon's throat for a second time. The cavern near shook with outrage at the girl's actions. It was tradition. There were rules. Rules to protect the unhatched. It was sacrilege. Heresy! The dragons on the ledges may not be gold, but they felt it deep in their bones. The need to protect their youngest brothers and sisters, the future of their home. Vee skidded to her knees in front of the egg, reached out to Lightning, and the cavern was practically in a frenzy.

A deep, deafening roar thundered through the cavern. Malsalth's neck was outstretched, a spark of red in her jewelled gaze. Yet it was not Vee that the dragon had raised her voice against. The gold roared up at her kin, bidding them all be silent. Dragons barked and squawked in alarm at the outburst from the dying mother. Turning her head away from the other dragons, Malsalth looked squarely at Vee, the red of her gaze fading away to be replaced with soothing greens. The gold dipped her head to the candidate, her throat once more taking up the welcoming song of the hatching.

Nacreoth's eyes flared yellow at the weight of Malsalths command for silence. The scene just kept getting more and more interesting. Vee was... Nacreoths egg memories were already faded by the flood of senses and memories and experiences that came with hatching and Impression but he knew her. He wanted to see what she was capable of.

The voices of the dragons thundered through the cavern and set her blood surging through her veins as hot and quick as it had in any fight for her life she'd had over the turns. Her hands jerked back before touching the shell and she looked up at the sea of swirling orange and red eyes in the glowlight of the cavern with her teeth bared, the tendons on her neck standing out like bowstrings under strain as she snarled back her terrified defiance. Everyone knew dragons couldn't hurt people but their riders could sure as shaff tear her apart and right now it looked like a mob up there but she'd had to do something!

Then, suddenly, with one more almighty roar it was over.

Vee's head snapped around and she looked up into Masalth's eyes, not red now but a gentle green. "It's got to hatch," she said to the gold, her voice still tense from the confrontation with half the shadding cavern of dragons, and with the fear of rejection. "Why hasn't it moved? Does it need help?"

F'liel jumped up when a girl had broke rank and ran for the last, unhatched egg. Shards, what an idiot she was to just run on the Sands. He was sure she would get reprimanded and saddled with chores until Thread finally fell again. The green rider was about to yell for someone to grab her when Malsalth reacted.

And not how he expected her to react. She roared and caused him to thump back into his seat. Shock was on his face as Malsalth seemed to approve of the girl's actions. Her mind had to be addled from the sickness but Vesunth seemed to disagree.

I know it doesn't seem right but wait and see. The green soothed her rider. F'liel's bones felt shook as he looked over at his companion and then back down to the sands. Vesunth started her hum back up as other dragons around her were unsure of what to do. Slowly, some of the others began to hum again. This egg. Perhaps it will hold a surprise for all of us.

F'liel made an angry noise under his breath. "It's not right. I hope she knows what she's doing..." He couldn't even tell if the "she" was the candidate or the dying gold.

"It...they might," J'in said quietly, cowed slightly by giant angry gold but Malsalth wan't angry at him or Flueth. More at everyone else. Not even angry at Vee it seemed. "Umm... try tapping it, see if it responds back?" And it might be better off for them to get off the sands yes.

He pushed back against the bronze lightly. Come on you, lets get up. J'in gave a slight hmm noise as the bronze finally snorted and lumbered up. "food and then nap."

Flueth replied but got up deciding that their sibling was well in hand and well food. Food sounded good.

Felaroth and V’ko - out of step for once in their lives - both faltered (Felaroth that an egg that couldn’t at least crack its own shell was likely to be dead anyway, that it should be disposed of quietly and with dignity, V’ko that it didn’t matter, this whole thing was… well, it wasn’t like there was much of a future anyway), V’ko putting her hands over her ears and gritting her teeth at the dragon-noises.

She was, however - because V’ko could not let planning for the future go, and who knew what might happen - considering if the candidate would be good in her wing. Just as a thought. Initiative and boldness should always be rewarded.

Wanjouth squeaked and covered her head with her wings. The green's eyes were tinged with anxiety and worry. She peered at the Sands from beneath her wing membranes and gave a little chirp. Look at her go! So brave and fearless, standing up to the others. I think I like her, E'dal.

E'dal, watching Vee's actions and those of the others around her, merely shrugged. His ears were still ringing from Malsalth's roar. And with the gold's approval, what more could everyone do but watch and wait. Deep down, he hoped that Vee managed to crack the egg and a gold came tumbling out... He would be the first to get her a skin of wine after they made it through weyrlinghood. "Well, she has guts, that's for sure."

Masalth approved? D'lana's jaw tightened a little but the gold's word was law in the hatching cavern and so she smoothed her gown and sank gracefully back into her seat. Perhaps Masalth had called the girl forward? It was either that or she simply saw no harm in the girl's actions, the rules were there to keep humans and hatchlings safe as much as they were out of simple respect and decorum.

Whatever the case however it was done now and D'lana looked around the cavern, catching the eyes of Istan riders where she could and if they were still on their feet Liarth sent very firm instructions to their dragons to stand down.

There was no answer for Vee from Malsalth. The gold simply stared back at the candidate, her eyes whirling a gentle green, humming gently in her throat. Above them dragons shifted nervously, taking up their hum yet a third time. Malsalth was a gold. Surely she would know when they needed to give up on the egg, and if she still hummed then they must also. The dragon's gaze shifted away from Vee's face, resting for a moment on the last of her eggs, before drifting back. She began to hum louder and stronger, leading the other dragons with her.

In front of Vee the egg jerked for the first time, rocking forward and ever so lightly brushing against the candidate's fingertips. Lightning began to vibrate suddenly, springing to life all at once. Cracks splintered across the shell's surface as it shuddered. With little warning the egg exploded, shards flying in all directions as young wings were stretched out. Rainbows whirled in blinking eyes, blinded by the sudden surge of light. Green feet barely touched the sand before the hatchling launched herself into Vee's arms with an exalted cry. Her wings and limbs desperately scrambling to wrap around the newest weyrling.

Malsalth abruptly stopped humming as the last of her children found their chosen. The dragon muffled a cough and a visible tremor ran through her, but she did her best to shrug it off. She turned her head to the dragons above her and reached out to them. The feeling she sent carried an air of apology, but also unquestionable confidence. Now come, join her in welcoming her children to the Weyr! Once again the gold stretched out her neck, this time to trumpet her joy. Even as Layered lay silent among her feet. She could not cheer for them all, but the eight she had seen safely into their bonded's arms, she would cheer for them.

Quote:
Vee? As Lightning rocks forward and brushes her fingertips Vee will feel a featherlight brush against her mind, before it reluctantly slips away. In front of her the egg begins to shudder. Cracks lace the shell and an anger begins to grow in her. A frenzy that makes her skin itch as desperation claws at her gut. Confinement. Restriction. The pressure grows. Friction and static building in every muscle of her body. A spring being wound tighter and tighter until-

VEE!! Shards went flying and a presence rushed in Vee's mind. The familiar fire and electricity flooded her system. This time though it was not contained. Unlike when she had been touched Lithustoth's egg and the green had been trapped inside, this time the same mind caught up Vee and pulled her higher. Up into the elation she felt as the young dragon launched herself into Vee's arms. I'm sorry, Vee! I wanted to come to you! I could feel you, but I couldn't reach you and I was afraid. What if I hurt someone? I didn't want to hurt anyone, Vee, and he wouldn't leave so I could come to you! I asked and he didn't! Limbs, both leg and wing alike, sought to wrap around her as the green hatchling desperately tried to get closer, pushing her egg-damp face against Vee's, rainbow eyes fixed on the young woman's dark eyes.

The egg cracked, and she was angry - but it wasn't her anger - and her skin felt as though it was sparking and then-

The egg exploded, the voice hit her mind and a moment later the mind hit her mind with the force of a thousand storms. When Lithustoth tumbled into her arms she was too breathless to speak, couldn't think, the world was simply Lithustoth- no the whole universe and anything that had ever been. Vee flung her arms around the green hatchling and squeezed her eyes tight shut as their foreheads pressed together. For a moment she thought she was going to cry but then she started to grin, and then to laugh.

"Lithustoth! Her name is Lithustoth and she is perfect!" Vee opened her eyes again and leant back so that she could look into the green's beautiful whirling rainbow eyes. "Hear that?" she murmured; "you're perfect, temper and all." Still grinning brighter than Rukbat ever shone Vee leant forward again to kiss her new bondmate on the muzzle.

Lithustoth crooned and rubbed her cheek against Vee's, love and relief swelling her hearts and buoying her up as though she had already taken to the skies she was destined to dominate. I'm not perfect but I found you. That's all that matters right now.

Vee laughed and pressed their foreheads together again. "Yeah, you're right." Okay, now she was crying but only a bit and nobody else could see so it didn't count.
