Chris' parents were shunned from the Shade community for selfishly and dangerously imbuing several stones. While others started to grow concerned when the pair chose to imbue a second, there was outright hostility when they imbued a third. While they weren't actively ostracised, the parents decided to leave the greater Shade society, somewhat to the relief of the others. They were naturally weary of striking out on their own, fearing for the safety of their growing family. They eventually built up a house at the base of a large tree a few miles away from the swamp. There they were free to imbue five more stones, resulting in a total of eight children. Chris was the second youngest of this large family and, as a result, knew very little of the larger Shade community hiding in the swamp. His parents grew cold whenever their children asked about their species, insisting that all that mattered now was their family. Being one of the youngest and the only hallowed in the family caused Chris to quickly take on the 'family clown' role, finding it helped him avoid being bullied or pushed around by his older siblings.
Many of Chris' siblings grew restless growing up in the closed environment, wishing to experience new places and people. One by one, the children left as they hit adulthood, leaving only Chris, one of his older sisters and his younger sister. The abandonment of their children left his parents bitter, demanding that Chris always stay by their side and take care of them as they aged. In time, even his two remaining sisters left, leaving only him to care for his now-sick mother. Taking care of his parents was no easy task, especially now that he had to forage and hunt for the three of them on top of providing any medical assistance he could. A bitterness began to grow in Chris, but he tried his hardest to remain playful and optimistic. It was family, after all. Besides, Chris didn't know any other life; none of his siblings so much as stopped by to say hello after they left. His mother often mused that they were probably chased away by the Shade community and suffered in the larger world. She insisted that Chris' 'birth defect' - his tail and only friend in the world, Aesthiore - was a mark of sickness, meaning he would suffer even more if he ever left his parents.
It seemed his life was doomed to be one of an isolated caretaker until one fateful day. Chris was foraging for food - far closer to the Swamp than he had dared before - and encountered another Shade. Something was wrong about her, however; her tail had long antlers and her claws were far more petite. Chris immediately panicked and ran, but the girl playfully laughed and chased him. This game of cat and mouse continued for the whole afternoon before she finally pounced and pinned him down. She introduced herself as Clare, one of the few hybrids that had grown up Below but returned to the Shade's swamp. Chris had never even heard of the world Below, and was fascinated by the stories she told. They agreed to keep meeting secretly every afternoon, finding beautiful waterfalls and forests to talk the hours away. It wasn't until much later that Chris realised how unusual it was that Clare wasn't bothered by his hallowed traits, often enjoying talking to his tail and giggling at the playful clacks it made back.
Over time, Chris and Clare fell inevitably in love. She often insisted that he tell his parents about them and their desires to live together, but he was scared of how they would react and, more importantly, felt guilty at the idea of abandoning his mother and her worsening medical condition. His decision was made for him when his mother forbid he leave their house, stating his father would take on the responsibility of foraging; Chris had been spending too long out of the house. This was the final straw for Chris, and he let out a barrage of complaints of injustice. Ashamed of what he had done and filled with adrenaline, he fled. Clare was devastated at what she felt she had caused, and suggested the two of them return Below to distance themselves. Currently the two of them live in Asphodel and Chris has enrolled in community college in order to professionally learn nursing; taking care of his sick mother had given him an advantage in this field. He still feels guilt over abandoning his parents, but is somewhat placated by the love he has found in Clare.

sebastian the result of chris' insecurity, the hallowed decided to imbue with strangers to spread his mutation through society, choosing only to raise sebastian. it was selfish to have a child merely to feel less alone in the world, but chris never regrets doing it. sebastian is a serious and rather macabre young man, but chris enjoys having a kid around for the opportunity to goof off like he used to. chris loves sebastian dearly, but he knows his son barely reciprocates this. his frustration with sebastian's misbehaviour has led to tension between the two, but he hopes he can help recover the relationship with his son as he grows older.

fallow the child chris imbued with clare, fallow is far more soft-hearted and respectful than his half-brother. chris was concerned that his younger son would grow up to be like sebastian - disrespectful and seemingly uncaring of his family. chris has spent far more time with fallow as an actual father, rather than as a 'pal'. he is pleased by the development of fallow and hopes that after forming this strong foundation, he can then become friends with his son as he grows older.

clare his current partner, chris never imagined he would love someone like he does clare. the two accept and love each other unconditionally, and chris often privately muses on how lucky he is to have met her. clare's cheeriness and openness with her emotions draws out chris' own feelings, and his playfulness and humour helps balance the mental illnesses she fights with. together they consider themselves the perfect couple and he is excited every day to spend the rest of his life with her. their future may be uncertain, but his love certainly isn't.

Marie was born to a clan that lived near the top of the average-sized peeks, meaning her family wasn't particularly well off nor considered 'lower class'. This provided her with what was essentially a clean slate. Like most Chimera, she was encouraged to train her ability to fly from a young age, and to her clan's delight she was a natural. Her fiery passion asserted itself from the time she was an infant, allowing her to get ahead of those her age around her, and this carried into her flight. Since she was a freshling, Marie treasured her ability to fly, refusing to walk if she could help it. This skill only bolstered her already-developed ego, and she quickly became a self-assured, assertive young lady. She had almost no contact with the world outside the Sceptres, only occasionally spying other races in the form of occasional traders or pilgrims and her family was even more isolated than most, being part of the Forgotten Clan. As her family was protective and community-focused, almost no one brought up the fact that Marie was hallowed. She saw her mutations as advantages; an additional eye to see further, larger wings to aid her flight, even clawed feet allowed her to traverse the mountains easier. Instead of feeling ashamed of her mutations, she often bragged about them. Her attitude didn't earn her many friends, but it surrounded her with others who wanted to benefit from her success and confidence.
Marie stayed in the mountains for her entire childhood, not even considering the rest of the world until she was a young adult. By that time, she was the strongest flyer in her clan and had begun to perfect her fire-breathing abilities. As always, she wanted more. She may not have had contact with anyone outside of her own little world, but like most she had heard of the Demon capital of Asphodel and, more importantly, their universities. Marie doubted anyone outside of her own species could know more about the school of fire magic, so she assumed there was a Chimera teacher somewhere. Sick of being a large fish in a small pond, she moved to Asphodel to study at Leviathan. She easily passed the entrance exams, showing an obvious proficiency in her major, Pyrestia.
Applying her tenacious attitude to her studies like she had the rest of her life, Marie near-topped her classes and graduated with ease. However, her controlling and short-tempered attitude led to her being almost completed avoided during her time in university. She acted as though this didn't bother her, but she was internally shocked that no one wanted to be with someone so successful and ambitious. Her experiences simply led to her being most self-interested and she was quickly attracted to the world of detective work. Her keen eyes for observation were perfect, but simply looking for work in the field made her frustrated by all the rules and regulations. During her search, she found jobs that intrigued her in the world of bounty hunting. This independence and encouragement to use all means necessary - in her case, her studies in fire magic - tempted Marie into her first bounty. She tracked the woman down with little effort and brought her in, finding the job easy but exhilarating. Now, Marie has already made a name for herself in the world of bounty hunters, and is determined to climb to the top.
On one particular mission, the employer insisted Marie worked with a small team if not with a partner. Always determined to be a lone wolf, the hallowed was incredibly reluctant to source out other bounty hunters to help her - more people meant less share of the bounty for her, but the job was too high-paying and exciting to pass up. One of the individuals she worked with was a feisty hybrid named Cyan. She immediately caught Marie's eye; the chimera was always one to be to drawn to high and unique energies. After some flirting on the mission, Marie knew she had to take her. After a passionate evening, Marie was almost ready to leave immediately in the morning as she usually did, but something about Cyan made her stay. She soon learnt that the hybrid was engaged; Marie expected herself to be furious, but she found herself almost relieved. While she wanted to stay with Cyan, the hybrid's fiance - an alchemist named Lucius - would provide most of the emotional stability of the relationship while Marie could simply enjoy the fiery passion. On a whim, Marie agreed to imbue some stones with the triad, knowing she'd hardly be around to contribute in their upbringing. Unfortunately for the hallowed, now that her children are freshlings and want to attend the nearby academy, she has been saddled with the responsibility of having them in her apartment on school days. This has worn Marie's already-barely-existent patience thin and only time will tell when she'll blow - when, not if.

when she was staying in a small apartment during her first months in asphodel, a vespercat would often find its way onto marie's balcony and try to gain her attention. marie tried to chase it away at first, but as it kept coming back she began to admire its persistence. seeing her own determination in the vespercat, marie began to put out food for the familiar, eventually even allowing her into the apartment. as few people in her clan had familiars at all - and none of them vespercats - it took marie years to even know chachki was mutated. this obviously didn't bother her, and she congratulated her new friend on its evolutionary advantage over the others of her species. marie could never bring herself to force the familiar away and has grown begrudgingly fond of her, even bringing her along to her new penthouse.

on one of the few evenings where she was allowing her children to relax, chachki brought home a friend to marie's penthouse. at first, the chimera was furious at a wild animal being brought to her patio, but her children grew quickly attached to the mutated jackelope. marie couldn't help but admit that she was impressed by the jackelope's superior appearance - the children even compared its wings and horns to her own. begrudgingly, marie allowed velour to stay, although she always insists that he is the kids' responsibility, not her's.

magenta, elowyn and zemsta the children marie had with lucius and cyan, she hardly sees the siblings as individuals but more of a collective. when they were younger and living with the others, marie was amused by the children who would fawn over her when she chose to visit. now that they have been forced into her home, however, she is far less amused. marie treats her children almost like tools, hoping to shape them into strong fighters like her. she doesn't care for any one of them in particular and took a few years to even learn all their names.

cyan marie's partner both on the field and in bed, cyan is a somewhat recent addition to marie's life. while she still goes on most missions by herself, marie has grown fond of having cyan nearby when she's working. her possessiveness of cyan is tested by the hybrid's fiance lucius, perhaps playing a part in her agreeing to imbue stones with her - marie had to prove she is as valuable to cyan as lucius is. cyan is the only reason marie is bothering to hang around now that the children are older, but even this may not be enough as the children grow older.
lucius cyan's fiance, marie is not overly fond of the quiet lucius. they are almost polar opposites in personality, making it difficult for marie to see anything interesting in the litch beyond his connections to the underground of asphodel. while she'd never admit it, marie is glad lucius is around as he provides stability for cyan where marie never could - the chimera sees him as an escape if she ever wants to leave, knowing cyan would still have him.

sometimes i think is this the way i'm supposed to be? was i just built differently? or is there something wrong with me?
It didn't take long for Willow to realise she was not like most people, both in physical appearance and mental state. From a young age Willow tended to feel as thought she left her body, dissociating with whatever activity she was participating in at the time. This both thrilled and concerned her mother and provider, Andrea. The demon saw it as a path to divination and clairvoyance, but it was concerning to be engaging in a conversation with your child only to see them suddenly look empty. Due to this odd behaviour, Willow was babied and isolated, her mother not wanting her to be harassed by anyone in the outside world. Instead of socialising with other children, Willow spent time with her mother practising divination or playing with her mountain of toys.
Despite not seeing many other children, Willow learnt from magazines and social media that she was particularly unique. While she found her eyes useful for partaking in many activities at once, she realised that more than two was considered peculiar. Multiple tails, four horns, coloured eyes - it seemed nothing about her was 'right'. When she confronted her mother with this information, Andrea insisted that it was simply a symptom of being incredibly attuned to magic - the demon conveniently left out that it was in fact her fault for awakening Willow's stone in October. This revelation put a pressure on the young freshling's shoulders to succeed, especially in magic. Her mother being rather superficial and flippant, Willow took up a lot of the chores and management of the household without Andrea even noticing. By the time she was old enough for school, Willow had developed a hard-working persona that required little praise.
Once she was old enough to attend the Academy, Willow insisted she go, wanting to improve herself by learning more beyond her home. Andrea was incredibly reluctant but, after hearing about the increased number - and thus acceptance - of hallowed children, she begrudgingly sent her away to learn. Fortunately for the clingy mother, Andrea's apartment is in the heart of the city and allows her to simply take Willow to school each day rather than let her live away in a dorm. Now that she is older and seen the disparity between herself and most students, Willow ponders if her tendency to disassociate is a symptom of wanting to 'escape' her mutations, but she could only truly address these things when she is an adult. She will also undoubtedly learn the true nature of mutated stones and have to consider what her mother's lie means to her and how she will approach the issue.

riri was a gift from willow's mother - andrea was worried her daughter would be lonely at the academy, and so she scoured the familiar market to find a companion that was mutated just like her daughter. willow appreciated the gesture, and she and riri have become fast friends. the jackelope is excitable and playful, often irritating the orderly willow. however, the freshling is very patient with her new familiar, and the two can spends hours together playing.

andrea one of willow's mothers and her sole provider, andrea was determined to form a close relationship with her hallowed child. despite being a freshling, it would appear that andrea relies more on willow than the other way around, but the young hybrid is happy to look after chores in the house and appease her mother's whims. although she loves her mother, willow hopes that attending the academy will allow andrea to become less clingy and doting.
kae willow's other mother who chose to raise the other stone. although they don't live together, willow enjoys kae's company and listening about the stories she weaves - although the chimera tends to leave out the less-child-appropriate content. as andrea became more clingy, willow insisted she spend more time with kae, hoping that they could become more of a 'family unit' and taking some of the socialisation pressure off her shoulders.
yarrow willow's twin and only real companion when she wishes to discuss the issue of being hallowed. andrea insisted the siblings see each other regularly and willow treasured the time spent with her twin - it was one of the few times where she would never disassociate. as they've grown older and are beginning to attend the academy, willow hopes the two only grow closer so they can rely on each other for comfort.

Lucius' family have lived in the demon capital for generations and, over time, have lost touch with their race's history and culture. Lucius remembers his mother apologising for this when he was a child, often wishing they could visit their homeland to learn more about their heritage, but the young Lucius couldn't care less. As far as he was concerned, the city was his home and always would be. They maintained a few litch traditions, however, such as being an incredibly tight-knit family - Lucius' home housed almost a dozen relatives. Like many of his kind, Lucius grew up believing patience and manners were important, but the city freshling also picked up street smarts and developed a quick wit.
Lucius felt most of his life was simply going through the motions - he attended the Academy for his entire childhood and graduated with slightly above-average grades. The litch wasn't unintelligent, he merely put most of his focus and energy towards networking and picking up amateur photography. Much to his parents' delight, the class he most thrived in was alchemy. Feeling it was a more enjoyable endeavour than most and knowing it would appease his family, Lucius attended Leviathan to study the field and inevitably find work making potions. Once graduated, Lucius surprised his family by moving out alone into a city studio apartment. When confronted on this decision, the litch insisted he simply needed space for both his photography and alchemical creations, but he said so with a glint in his eye.
Lucius' career started off uneventful so, to bring spice into his life, he began sourcing work in the underbelly of the city. It wasn't easy, but the connections he'd formed throughout his life and in the club-photography scene got him the access he needed. To his delighted surprise, a niche that needed filling was combat potions for underground fighters, less-than-clean cops and bounty hunters. He happily filled this space, enjoying the challenge and excitement more than the money - although he couldn't deny it was lucrative. While working with these seedy groups, he met many interesting and somewhat off-putting individuals, but the one that most caught his eye was a bounty hunter named Cyan. He was instantly fascinated by her and her energy and was quick to find his way to her side. Lucius insisted he provide her with any potions she may need on her bounties and, due to a natural chemistry between them and the litch's persistence, they eventually became an item.
It didn't take long for Cyan to move in with Lucius and, after a relatively short period of time, the two became happily engaged. The couple are still in this engaged period due to Cyan's work becoming more active and the hybrid needing to put in more time as a solo-worker; she couldn't rely on others to plan missions or provide equipment. Lucius helped as much as he could and was more than content to simply support his fiance in her career. He was incredibly encouraging when she suggested she join a team-mission to see if it was better than solo work, but he could never have predicted what Cyan told him on her return; that she had met another bounty hunter - Marie - and fallen in love with her chaotic energy. Lucius was obviously shocked and put-off, but he had never been against poly relationships. Lucius has only met Marie a handful of times but he can say confidentially that he is not fond of her. Still, for the sake of his beloved fiance, Lucius is determined to at least not-hate the wild chimera. At the very least, he's glad Cyan has found a partner to have in the field, despite his deep suspicions of where it may lead.

being involved in the photography scene, lucius couldn't help but notice the amount of content involving peoples' pets. curious to see what the appeal was, he sourced an expensive but well-bred jackalope, appreciating their aloof nature. hale tends to keep to himself and only appreciates comfort from lucius, but is content to sit around the apartment all day and look gorgeous. much to lucius' delight, the jackalope seems to have shown uncharacteristic affection towards the litch's fiance, cyan; the same can't be said for marie (to lucius' secret pleasure).

the moment the species was announced to the world, lucius became obsessed with groffu. while he knew most people assumed they were just magical frogs, the litch went out of his way to research the strange creatures and discovered the truth of the parasitic eyes that anchored themselves to the amphibians. lucius found this fascinating and was quick to find one of the familiars to take home for himself. strem mostly keeps to himself, occasionally interacting with hale. the exceptions are lucius' children; the groffu loves being held by the freshlings and often croaks eagerly at their company.

magenta, elowyn and zemsta the children he had with cyan and marie, lucius adores all three of his freshlings. having been a stay-at-home dad during their infant years, lucius formed a strong bond with all of his children, giving them more lenience and freedom than most parents would. he has always encouraged learning and experimenting in his family and hopes this will shape them into confident, intelligent individuals as they grow older. while he sent them to live with marie during school days for their own good, lucius somewhat questions his decision; the chimera nears on abusive as a mother and lucius misses having his children around. every day he considers having them stay at his apartment permanently, but every day he talks himself out of it. lucius hopes nothing more than to maintain a strong relationship with his children as they grow into young adults.
