The demon sat in class anxiously, holding her head with her two hands in order to help her concentrate. She found herself always struggling to pay attention in classes.. While the teachers were talking about interesting topics, her mind was focused elsewhere. She found herself shifting uncomfortably, however, when students started to talk one by one. W-what?! she thought, panicking. It was to be one of those go around the room and express your thoughts or ideas sort of session and...

Listening to the student currently talking, she gathered they were supposed to talk about a kind of magic, and their favorite. As it became her turn, she nervous piped up, saying, "Um, there's a type of magic called divination, which can be used to figure out future events." Tapping her chin in thought, she was unsure what her favorite was though. She cared very little for learning magic - her endeavors were more focused on her musical inclination. Should she make something up? Phaedra's lips curled into a small frown and she shook her head, unsure. "N-no...I don't have a favorite, I think... though I guess illusion is kind of cool? Because you can sorta like...trick people with it," she said softly.

Phaedra fell silent, and the next freshling started announcing their answer. She took a big breath of relief, now that her turn was over. Phaedra really didn't like discussions - she felt too anxious about speaking up most the time!

~~

Zephyr watched the teacher with awe, entranced by the lesson. Magic was so cool to the young bakaneko - it made them eager to learn to dabble in it themselves. As the teacher had each student one by one explain what type of magic they enjoyed, Zephyr jittered excitedly and their tail flailed about, anxious for their own turn. As the demon girl before them finished talking, her voice quiet and hesitant, the bakaneko beamed proudly. Zephyr loved any chance to talk about themselves.

When it finally was, they couldn't contain their excitement. "Hello everyone!! I'm Zephyr if you don't know! I'm a new student. I'm a bakaneko!" Realizing they were getting offtopic, they audibly cleared their throat and went back on topic. "My favorite type of magic are charms! A lot of bakaneko specialize in charms so I think it's fitting," they announced, giggling happily. "Charms are when you change something, but just for awhile. So you could like... use a cleaning charm to make a stain go away. And yeah! I wanna become REALLY awesome with charms," they said, puffing their chest out proudly.

User ImageThis lesson was more of Valentein's speed of topics. Magic. Though, Val found themselves distracted as they couldn't help but stare at Tethys, tracing his star patterns with their eyes. Fascination had set in so much that Valentein had even missed the question that everyone had been answering: a rare event to be had. Val shook their head to break their stare and listened to a few other freshlings speak to gather what Val needed to say as well. Ahh, what kind of magic they knew, and what was their favorite. An easy task, though it was annoying that Valentein found themselves having to talk so much in front of others. Once it came their turn, Val cleared their throat again to make sure they had everyone's attention. "I know a lot about magic as it is my favorite subject and I spent a lot of time reading about it. I focused mostly on Transmutation, Divination, Illusions, and Shapeshifting. My favorite, however, is Divination." Valentein nodded with confidence and almost had a slight smirk on their face. Then their eyes fell back on Tethys and her face fell back into its natural bland look, continuing to stare off at the constellations.

Culture shock? Well after some research, Xochi found out that it was not only a thing that happened, but happened with startling frequency. Humming to herself, she sat down and wrote a simple essay.

if a friend of mine were to come down with culture shock, ther are a few things that I can think of what would help them. First and foremost, culture shock is from facing something that is radically different than their own culture, so understanding what they faced and why it bothered them would be the first step. After that, I would try and show them positive things from the culture they were having troubles with. Such as finding a nice piece of art or a taking them on a dinner. If that did not work, then there is always the option of introducing them to elements oftheir own culture, the one they are most familiar with. Being closer to home and allowing them to bask in those feelings would definitely be beneficial and I can think of no better way to help them than to be there and be supportive.

User ImageAh man, another speaking class. Alyssum really needed to ask her teachers if she could start writing stuff down. Since she didn't want to go up to the teacher and talk to him at this moment with all eyes watching her, Alyssum stood up and did her best to answer. "Bakeneko are good at charms and illusions." Alyssum paused to gather her thoughts, since she hadn't really wondered if she had a favorite before. Both seemed to have valid pros and cons, and she couldn't decide which one she might like better. She didn't know enough about other kinds of magic to venture a favorite from any of them either. "Both are good," she said simply, then sat down, glad her bangs hid most of her face.

User ImageRowan almost started to bounce in their seat with excitement. This was a topic they were most interested in. As soon as it was their turn they stood up, not even worrying whether they looked neat and serious. "Enchantments are my favorite," they declared, even bouncing a little as they stood. "They're pretty difficult to master, especially if you want to enchant a living thing, but they're good for all kinds of things or making stuff work better. They have a lot of different uses and you have to be really clever to figure them all out. A good enchantment can last a long time, too!" Rowan plopped back down in their chair, still looking quite enthused.

User ImageCybelle was nervous as he got ready for his turn in the class to speak. He stood up and started "Well umm I don't really do magic myself, but I liked watching my mom do crafting magic working on jewelry. She seemed to use it to make her jewelry prettier, which she sold to the high-class chimera ladies. Also, my dad using enchanting to help my mom sell the jewelry in his spare time and also he enchants homes so people feel safe." Cybelle moved about nervously he didn't like public speaking in the least, he waited for the teacher to tell him if his answer was ok.

Magic? Cosnidering that magic was a major part of their studies, Cyota wondered what they would focus on. Nature magic was pretty fun! Oh and Alchemy was really cool. But when it came time to speak, Cyota knew that there was only one choice. Standing up, they nodded to the teacher, "All magic is interesting in it's own way, but I think the most important and interesting magic is divination! To tell the future is to forestall misery, and to know if that cookie you found on the ground and eated was bad or not. It's important." Yes, that seemed like a sound and reasonable response.

Manny was going to die. This was it. Rest in Peace little ghost dude, your time has come. He didn't want to talk again, in front of his classmates, but he did have a favorite type of magic. When it came to his turn, he stood up and bundled himself deeper in his hoodie. His foot rubbed against the ground nervously, "I... I think... Shapeshifting is... r-really cool. I want to learn how to phase through stuff... B-but it is kind of ha-ard and I hope soon I can.... g-get better. Hopefully." Okay enough talking. Manny sat down and bundled up tightly, hoping his response was good enough for the teacher.

Magic, huh? Nefertiti was particularly fond of magic, she grew up hearing and learning about it! It was a thing that she knew eventually should could get a grasp on and do. When it came to her turn she immediately stood up, smiling wide. "Bakeneko's are actually really really good at magic! I've learn a lot of things for charms from my home, but I can't do them even if I tried and believe me, I've tried!" Nefertiti giggled a little bit before continuing, "Mmm...if I had to choose my favorite kind of magic...I guess it would be protective magic! Little things like making sure my eraser on my pencil never wore out or my friend's shirt would never lose color!" She giggled childishly again before she sat down, smiling widely.

Lilo felt strongly about magic, they had always been told about the benefits of magic. They knew, however, that many races felt like Baphomets were not really magically inclined, they smirked to themself. Finally they're turn came around. "Contrary to the popular belief, Baphomets are actually pretty good at magic, sure we like things to be flashy, but come on...that makes it so much more exciting. Everyone likes a good show! My favorite magic...well the ones that seem really interesting are banned so I guess I like alchemy the best!" They proudly sat down, with the biggest grin on their face. Lilo felt pretty proud of their answer, they defended their race and did a pretty good job of it too!

Oh gosh... more speaking in front of others? Callie was really beginning to question why she had decided to come to the academy instead of staying home in her comfort zone. Fussing with the cuff of her sleeve, the neko stood up, but kept her eyes down as she spoke. "I.. uhmm.. I really like charms and enchantments. Maow maow taught me some for around h--home. I'm p--pretty good at cleaning and k-keeping things clean with them." As she continued her nervous fidgeting, the poor thing actually managed to tear a hole through her sleeve. "Oh gosh... good think maow maow taught me how to fix this, too..." she said to herself before taking her seat quickly.

User ImageAn excited gasp tore from Euria's lips at the question. Without any hesitation at all, she flung her hand up into the air and waved it with fervor, halfway out of her seat. As soon as she was called on, she plopped back down into her chair with a grin.

"I've heard about transmutation magic before!" she chirped, swinging her legs back and forth, "It's when, ummm, when you change one thing into another thing, right? And it has to be the same or something--like you can't change one slice of cake into a whole cake--because as cool as that would be, it would also make no sense if you could make something out of nothing. That would be silly!" Silly, but efficient.

And delicious. What she wouldn't do for some cake right now--

Waving the thought away, Euria leaned forward and propped her elbows up on her desk, dropping her head into her hands. "It's my favourite kind of magic too! I just think it sounds soooo cool, and I wish that I was a fancy alchemist that could use it too! Maybe one day."

And with that final comment, she heaved a wistful sigh and dropped lower in her seat, eyes going glassy as she imagined what it would be like to be a master in transmutation. Having already said her part, Euria spent the rest of class alternating between daydreaming and listening to her peers speak.

Culture shock, huh? Zenith supposed that there were a lot of people that had to deal with that these days... from Nixie, to all of the daydreams, and just recently Bakeneko and Naga. But most of all she thought Bakeneko and Naga had it the worst- they weren't as technologically advanced and for some reason thought the Nine were cats and snakes...? Ah well.

Culture shock is a pretty big thing to overcome, but I think the first step would be to try and familiarize them with whatever it is that's upsetting them. The shock itself comes from encountering something HUGELY DIFFERENT from your own culture, but I guess there are ways to explain things to just about anyone, right? I'd probably reassure them that it's okay to feel a little out of place at first, but as time goes on, they'll get more acclimated and feel okay! Comfort should be the key to helping someone overcome culture shock.

Zenith nodded to herself, then signed and dated the paper before passing it in to Tethys.

Natsumi shook her head and then said "No I don't have a favorite type of magic, I know in my blood line the gesits are able to use disappearing magic, but I don't know how to do it, my gesit blood is kinda thin. I don't really mind, though. I kinda want to learn some sort of enchanting magic so I can use it someday to make my skirt look prettier for my dance recitals, or maybe enchant my ballet slippers to sparkle??" Natsumi said wondering if that was possible, she was still learning things about magic. She then stood there waiting for the teacher tell her if her answer was alright.

This wasn't really something Shaxio thought himself capable of doing. He wasn't really a people person, he was an animal person.... Okay, so, on occasion he did enjoy helping a person or two in need but... culture shock?

I don't think I'm equipped to help someone with that. I don't socialize very well as it is. Asking me to help with something that big will likely end poorly... The best I could do is offer a listening ear and maybe a warm or cold drink if that would help. I suppose explaining whatever it is that's upsetting them is also something I could try doing, but I don't always grasp cultural norms as it is. I don't think I would make a particularly good friend in this aspect.

He shrugged, then wrote his name and the date before handing it in to Tethys.

Magic?? Korvau didn't know a lot about magic. He liked to do other things instead... but he did know a little bit about magic. "Oh oh!!" He waved his hand when it was his turn, then beamed when a bewildered Tethys nodded in his direction. "I know 'bout charms!! They got the dorms charmed so stuff doesn't catch on fire." He nodded excitedly, ears flapping about as his tail wagged side-to-side. "I don't got a favorite though! I like other stuff instead. Like runnin' or swimmin'..." He paused, thinking, then gasped slightly.. "Do they got spells that make it so you can breathe under water!? I'd like that!!" Now magic had Korvau's attention.

Aphelion couldn't help but jerk slightly at the sudden noise coming from the hybrid next to him. Goodness... that boy was loud. His ears folded back a little until he was done talking - or, well, seemed like he was done talking. The small kid burst out again with a new question. Even Tethys seemed kind of at a loss of how to respond. Thankfully, though, that seemed to be the end of it.

"My father is studying Divination." Aphelion nodded slightly, "it is a kind of magic that lets you see into the future. Or maybe the past, I think that is also something you can do. My father wants to see the future, though." He shrugged slightly... Magic hadn't really caught his eyes yet. "I do not have a favorite kind of magic right now." Well... Tethys didn't say they had to have one at the moment.
