He paused at the look on her face and turned thoughtful again himself, cutting off the teases. "Was I a moody blond teenage p***k?" he asked instead.

"Yeah but that's not really like ... anyone could be that."

"Anyone?" He was mildly offended on behalf of his past and dream selves, but he thought he was starting to understand why Chel was hesitant to admit anything. It was the same reason he became livid when a legacy decided to pop into his head.

"Sorry if I woke you."

"Nah I was awake," she told him, putting her arm under her head to prop herself up in a bit.

She let out a long sigh. "Yer not ... that's not yers t'see," she said cryptically.

"Neither was mine," he verbally shrugged. "Condensed several years into...I don't know how long? That was a nightmarish bonus." He scoffed to himself, like it made it matter a little less to have reviewed again where he wasn't in control. Like it didn't remind him how much it had hurt.

"No," Chel said sternly. "It's-"

She let out a long, frustrated sigh and fell onto her back, staring at the glowing decorations on her ceiling. Words were already hard and getting them out was a stuttering, long process. "That stuff's in my brain. My brain's been bounced around in enough. If you're in there, I'm not just me." Her arm covered her eyes; easier to see without having to. "It's not yers t'take." As though Jack had done it intentionally.

"You make it sound like I did it on purpose, but neither of us want that s**t going on." The experiment with her artifact alone was evidence of that. "Must've been either another Deus anomaly or one of those God damn crystals."

Jack rubbed at his eyes tiredly. "For what it's worth, I didn't see anything that would change how I see you now."

Chel removed her arm and gaped at him. "No- ah s**t." She reached out the hand closest to him to dust her knuckles on his cheeks.

"Not your fault." Never his fault- maybe that was the problem. "It freaks me out. My fault for pussyin' out."

"S'fine. I know it's ******** up." It bothered him more than he was able to emote at the moment. But Jack did raise an arm slightly, offering for her to be the little spoon this time.

Chel moved with his motions, and it was easier to talk when she didn't have to look at him. Like always.

Same as usual.

She pulled his arm over and adjusted the blankets until she was in a blanket cocoon. It was quiet for a short time, somewhere between thinking of words and actually attempting to will it away by falling asleep. The irony came in that the dream she held Jack, but now he carried her.

Time stretched on. It could have been the beginning of the night and it could have been dawn for all she knew. Finally she opened her mouth with a quiet intimate tone. "Did you think it was your fault? The divorce?"

Nestled close with his chin over her head and his arm tucked around her, he was half asleep by the time her question broke the silence, too comfortable to want to fight his drowsiness yet too wary of returning to the dream world after what had just happened. "Mm...Maybe," Jack murmured after a few moments of thought. "Dream made it seem like it was for sure." Maybe that said something about him.

But that could have been forced, the particular angle the shard happened to be aiming distorted through the realm of dreams. The real world wasn't quite so biased, but perhaps just as confusing.

"Wasn't an easy kid t'raise. The part you didn't really see a lot, the bit about shadows n' s**t...That's where I was really unbearable. I thought I knew better." After another pause, he added in more of an undertone, somewhat embarrassed, "Thought I was special or chosen or some s**t.

"But eomma was a controlling b***h too, so...Guess it was both our faults. Or maybe it was dad's fault for being a p***y about it. Or maybe actually deciding to have a kid isn't enough t'make you stay in love with someone. Or maybe my knight's ********' sobstory is true and the Hawthorn line is just stupid cursed."
The twilight state was making him ramble, so he tucked his head against hers for a moment.

While he talked she moved her lips down each of his fingers; idle motions to keep her mind busy. Always needing to touch, move, think, touch.

"You was right though," Chel said with a small yawn into his hand. You are special and chosen and unbearable and cursed. "Cursed with bad poetry." Gentle jokes to break the mood, quiet murmurs in her mind.

She couldn't say it wasn't his fault. She wanted to, it was her kneejerk reaction to say <********> your parents, but at the same time she'd wondered the question of is it my fault? too many times to count.

After the joke she remained quiet. She figured Jack might have some quesitons of his own.

He hummed through her hair noncommittally. The more he thought about these little visits to alternate times and places happened, the more Jack wanted to hold her closer. Not one thus far had proven anything like made for each other as Chel had once put it, and even if it just reinforced his own beliefs about it (choice over fate), it disquieted him nonetheless. Or maybe he was just being overly sensitive again. Neither of them needed the reminder of who Lina used to be.

(Or maybe, just maybe, made for each other wasn't necessarily always good.)

"Did you really hide your accent?"
PostPosted: Tue Oct 13, 2015 9:21 am

Of all the things he saw between her attitude and her sexual history, her accent was his concern. She cracked a smile and let out a small breath, almost incredulous.

"I did it when I came here too. Guess it was a few years ago now," she mused. "Didn't want t'give people one more punch t'throw. You move to a new school with the accent and suddenly yer cowgirl yeehaw and people can't see nothin' else." So went her line of thinking due to every reaction she'd had because of it before. It was one thing to be the girl who couldn't read and another to be the hick that couldn't read.

"Mm. Point." Teenage Jack would have mercilessly taunted her for it for sure; even early life at Deus had seen more than one insult thrown, if not the occasional (and far less biting) tease now.

"M'not surprised you were scrappy as a kid too," he observed. "Kind of refreshing, in retrospect." Jack didn't know where he was going with it, but he kept talking. "Always standin' out wherever you go."
