Jay groaned as she watched out the window, bored and contemplating the changes she'd seen and earning an amused look from the driver in front. The countryside looked... well. It looked like the countryside. But every city, town and even villages had been destroyed by something. Charred remains of clay constructs crumbling clumsily, cascading a course corrected by corner and- wait, she was distracting herself.
She'd taken the time to try and see if the Internet or mobile networks were running. Nothing her phone could connect to, meaning her dad ditched paying her phone bills or the company went down when these attacks occurred. As for the Internet, she had no idea since she hadn't found an access point for one yet. She needed to research exactly how far into the future she is...
The raven-haired girl sighed and clutched the one piece of the past she made - the fail-safe shell part preventing the cryogenic pod from being used again. She remembered explaining to her dad what the engineers had told her in the specifications and how her idea wasn't just cost-effective but downright solid. Which, amusingly enough, wasn't even true. She figured using mercury for an insulator would've worked best since it expanded when heated, making it good for radiating heat.
Ah, she was getting ahead of herself. Looks like she arrived... somewhere. She guessed the nearest governmental building, like she asked. "Merci beaucoup, mon ami!" she thanked her rescuer, a kind old gentlemen and his daughter. The girl waved back excitedly as the vehicle slowly took off to a faster speed out of the city.
Jay gripped her last keepsake. She had to survive for Mum. She had to thrive for Dad. She had to live for herself. Most importantly, she needed to figure out how to do all of those now. She could make out some French - she'd gotten rusty but could pick up a few key pieces of information from the radio when it wasn't speaking in other languages - but if that's all she had to her, she needed to find a job or something quick.
Which meant papers, documents and proof of citizenship. The only good thing Dad did was make sure she had French citizenship alongside her Japanese and British ones. Or something like that. He always had to handle that, the controlling... that's not a nice word to follow up with. Not non-explicitly anyway. She didn't want to end up as a potty mouth or something stupid.
Focus. Go to the building and ask for what's going on. B.A.I.T.R. Base... Baiter base? Well, this sounded like an interesting name. She walked in semi-confidently, stride after stride, to wherever she had to go to speak to someone who could help her. Hopefully the receptionist. Then she asked, "Excuse me, I'm from some time in the past and I was stuck in cryostasis. Could you possibly help me out with... well, learning what's happened and why the world's basically a goner?"
God, she hoped they spoke English. She never took up Japanese because she hated the amount of symbols they had... plus most people seemed to speak it alright where she seemed to go. It'd also be awkward if everyone universally spoke English now. Would they though? English could get pretty silly. Also she was panicking, was no-one else feeling woozy or anything right now?

Ashley, a secretary working at the Paris Branch of Baiter was working through a steady stream of people coming through, some on the phone, some not. She was a nice woman, young one working her way into getting into the main base. Though, if she went all the way up to that level she would have to become a Baiter and she wasn’t sure if she could handle that. She had seen more people walk out in a body bag than she had as a successful Baiter. The thought made her sigh. Typing her way through all of the requests she had piling up, she only looked up when a young woman came up to her speaking in a funny accent. Still, she was able to make out what she was saying rather easily, even though she was using what she now assumed was an older version of English. “Oh, my dear! What year were you frozen in?” She asked, searching up a few documents that may or may not help her out. When the woman answered, Ashley gasped. “3504? That was three hundred years ago, sweetie! Date is August 23rd, 3839. I’ll pull up everything you need to know, just give me a moment.”
The woman typed away furiously, bringing up quite a few documents to read. While she did this, she gave the woman as much of a synopsis as she was able to. “The basic run down is that not too long after you went into cryostasis these things we now call A.I. attacked. It was so sudden! They went through our biggest electronics, and where the biggest masses of people were. Only a select few cities actually survived, though now there are settlements in a few places, though they aren’t as safe as the main cities.” The woman brought up more documents and some pictures to show the woman. Pointing at one of Japan after the attack, another of Germany, and a couple of the United States. “These were all taken by drones after the attack. That’s what the whole world looks like now. Japan is practically gone, save for one settlement that I know about up north near Sapporo, and a place called Kamikatsu down south. The United States is the same, save for Chicago which has developed an interesting way to keep the city safe from harm. They have a shield much like the one on Gondora.” She pointed out each picture as she spoke about them. The photos depicted flattened earth and destroyed buildings. All of them were the same, no matter the country. England, Japan, Germany, Africa, the US, all of them. Nothing was still standing in any of the pictures. “Now, here is where our organization comes into play. We are what is known as B.A.I.T.R, or The Bureau of Alien Investigation and Threat Removal. Because that was what the A.I.’s are. Alien life forms. They came from the Arc.”
The woman took a deep breath, “We are a corporation that spans across the world dedicated to fighting and eradicating the AIs from existence. It’s an import organization that we have, and we have bases in Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, Kampala, Shanghai, Sydney, and of course, here, in Paris. Then we also have headquarters in a place called Gondora, which is a floating island out somewhere in the ocean.” She pulled up a picture of Gondora, showing the beautiful island city. “Then we have what we like to call the Half exam. The Human Artificial Life Fusion, where we take an AI and place it inside the human body to create what we call Baiters. They’re the ones who fight the AI’s and keep us safe as we all try to rebuild the world.”
Suddenly, Ashley winced, looking at the girl with an apologetic face. “Oh, I’m sorry. I rambled a bit. Was that too much for you, sweetie?” She hoped she didn’t overwhelm the girl, she gave her a weak smile, hoping she didn’t go over too much in such a short amount of time. “Here, let me grab you a glass of water.” She said, getting up from her desk and walking over to the water dispenser on the wall. Ashley felt horrible. The girl had just gotten out of a stasis! She had been asleep for three hundred YEARS! Silently reprimanding herself, she walked back over to the girl and handed her the water. “This is all probably too much for you. Do you have any questions?”

"3839...?"
Well... That was kinda close their ballpark figure, she guessed. Still, Jay had been frozen for nearly 350 years! Their project had worked after all! If only the project lead was still alive to see his work. Jay almost sighed remembering him - about the only good thing churned out of Dad's company. He looked a lot like any other with black hair, average stature and the same Asian skin as the rest of the workers. But he had a drive to help others despite his own problems. Not many people had that.
Jay almost gawped in shock and awe at what these artificial intelligences had done to the planet. They managed to nearly outright flatten the entire human race? No wonder she'd seen so many destroyed homes and very few vehicles out. She must've had the luck of the Irish with her on her journey to Paris. If the Irish even still existed. Oh God, space Nazis appeared in her head. Stupid Nazis.
She recognised Kamikatsu... wasn't it that place that ended up recycling all their trash? Who knew karma caught up and gave them a helping hand. She wondered if any descendants of her workers got there... Wait, aliens.
"So... aliens exist? Why aren't the A.I. just beaming us up or working the planet for resources or something? Why kill off the species unless they're planning to move here?"
As she took the glass, Jay nodded along to most of what was said by her. She noted nowhere in the UK had survived. Which could mean...
"Is there anything left in the UK at all? Portsmouth, specifically. I had family there."
Oh, and they put A.I. into people's bodies. Wonderful. Can't imagine that went wrong. She took a sip then pointed out the obvious, "And wouldn't the A.I. just hijack the person's mind? And how didn't Paris go down, it has to use just about the most electricity in the European region thanks to the Eiffel Tower."
Jay actually sighed this time, rubbing her head earnestly. She felt a little overwhelmed with news rather than info. She was basically a grandma in a kid's body... ew. Shivering, she added on, "And how come you aren't even freaked out? Don't tell me someone copied our design - Dad said he'd kept it safe on some naval database not even the techs could touch."
She started feeling some sort of responsibility for the state of humanity. She was there just before the attacks started - if she'd gotten her dad in instead of her, he could've had the reasoning and the control needed to save them... Her shoulders slacked for a moment, then tensed as she forced her self to ask, "... What exactly does that exam entail? The Half Exam, was it not?" She didn't even seem bothered by the way English was spoken now. That wasn't her focus, it was something she could pick up later. Languages had annoying quirks added in all the time. It was just learning them. Like French - most basic sentences made use of something like he, she or they, then some form of the infinitive then-
Distracting yourself. Focus, Jay. These A.I. were still cropping, meaning something was producing them or there were lots more than anticipated... "And how are there as many A.I. as there are now? How do they run? Are they formed via constructs?"

Ashley sighed, glad to see that the young girl was doing okay. At least in the sense that she wasn’t freaking out. She knew that too much information was sometimes a lot to take in, and this really was a lot. “Well, yes, aliens exist. As far as we know, at least. There was a ship that resided overhead for a long time before it came down and we stole equipment from it to make our technology better. We didn’t think that anyone was on board, but it turned out the tech was the aliens, which resulted in the AI’s taking over and destroying everything.” Ashley sighed, it was such a huge tragedy. Too much had happened all at once. She was so glad she wasn’t alive at that time. “And as far as I can tell, they don’t want our resources. Nor do they want them. It’s part of what makes them so terrifying… They just want us dead.”
When the girl asked about Portsmouth, Ashley sadly shook her head. “No, there’s barely any ruins there anymore. I’m sorry. England was hit pretty hard, as far as I’ve been told. In all my history books growing up, and in my training to be a secretary here, I’ve been told that they attacked within the blink of an eye, and it was hard for some people to make it out. Some human races have gone extinct. Mostly islander races, sadly. Which is unfortunate, because they had the most interesting cultures…”
When the girl questioned how the AI’s didn’t just take over the mind of the person a grim look washed over the girl’s face. “That… Happens a lot, actually. More often than not the AI does take over the person’s body and wreak havoc on the station. It’s one of the reasons why there’s a few baiters in each room at any given time.” The girl then shrugged, “As far as how Paris survived… It was because that’s where all the engineers went. I think it was actually one of the first places that had a shield go up, using the Eiffel tower as its generator. It’s really neat, I think.”
Ashley giggled when the woman brought up her being rather calm about her just coming out of the cryostasis. “I’ve seen a lot of weird things as a secretary in a baiter base. Not a few days ago, I saw a man come in with a huge wound in his chest being dragged in to take the Half to save his life as a last resort. He survived, funnily enough. Baiters also don’t…. Die. I’ve seen them get mauled on a Half gone wrong, then wave at me the next day in the halls. Someone coming out of a stasis from three hundred years ago isn’t the strangest thing I’ve seem. New, certainly, but not strange.” Ashley gave the woman a sweet smile. She was with this girl for so long, she was glad there were at least a couple other secretaries on duty. “Sadly, we don’t know much about the AI’s even still. They have physical manifestations, and we know they’re from the alien ship, but outside this I have no idea. I hear they can talk to you when you bond with them during the Half, though. It’s really weird.”
The girl asked about the Half, how it worked and what happened during it. Lord, there was so much about the Half. But… Ashley did hope, at least somewhat, that the girl would try. She seemed like the kind of person who would make it out alive. And my word, would that be an interesting story. “The Half exam takes place in one of these back rooms.” Ashley pointed towards one of the doors behind her desk. “There, they insert an AI into an item of your choice. This becomes what is called a core, it’s where the AI is housed for your time as a Baiter. They then put you under and you have a battle with the creature. The idea is that you beat it into submission, and you become a baiter able to use its powers to eradicate the rest of the AI’s. It’s the only solution we have been able to find.” Ashley shook her head, apologizing again and finally saying “I never got your name, by the way. Mine is Ashley.”

How pointlessly tragic and heartless. Still, did just one ship really lead to all of this? One ship and the tech inside nearly destroyed the entire planet... Jay didn't really know how to react - especially when she heard the news of England. Her calm and nearly regal attitude slipped into a more lonely and almost afraid tone, like she'd been abandoned by her parents. "Not even graveyards...?"
She didn't even realize she was crying a little at this point until she felt the tears on her cheeks. She tried recovering by sipping her water, a slight motion she didn't even seem dedicated to entirely as she barely tilted the cup. It likely wasn't a success, so she though about this Half exam briefly instead. At least she could distract herself a little.
On one hand, she could take just about any other job and help with recovery much faster. She'd be relatively safe and not have to worry about fighting these things. On the other hand, they destroyed everything she knew and she wasn't even sure she could land a job, let alone housing. Plus the fact people might not see the same thing as this lady has... Well, that and she was utterly livid at the fact she basically went back to her kid years again when it came to living conditions.
Somewhat calmer than before, she wiped her tears away with her free hand and made a decision. With as firm a voice as she could muster - for a girl ripped from her home and nothing left to lose, really - she responded somewhat morosely, "My name is Jay Mason. I... don't really think I've got much else to do beyond help somehow, I think. And if beating the A.I. is the only way to do it... then I'll take that chance."
She could also abuse the Half Exam's literal core mechanic, she figured. Plugging an A.I. into the cryostasis machine wouldn't exactly be the best idea for anyone dumb enough to try. But first she had to have her part made into one, then beat the crap out of the A.I. she was given. "I think I want to do this Half exam, Ashley."

sighed, glad to see that the young girl was doing okay. At least in the sense that she wasn’t frAshleyeSadly, Ashley shook her head. “There would be too many. I’m sorry. We do have a few memorials in each city, though. The one here is near the Musée du Louvre. Just outside, I believe.” She honestly felt bad for the girl. She had been dumped into this world with nothing, absolutely nothing, three hundred year in her future. She had no family, no friends, nothing to her name… The best thing for her, if Ashley were honest, would be to become a Baiter. At least with that she would be able to take care of herself and have a place to call her home. The missions would be brutal, but it would at least be something. But… Ashley didn’t comment. That wasn’t her place.
The girl was now crying, and Ashley didn’t quite know what to do. Was she supposed to comfort her? Was she supposed to be that motherly person and wipe away the tears? Ashley opened her mouth, then closed it once again. What was there even to say to all of this? I’m sorry you vastly outlived your entire family and are now likely the only one left? That wasn’t very comforting at all. Lord, what would her mother say about all of this. Ashley almost sighed, but held it in. The girl finally introduced herself as Jay Mason. Then, as if by some glimmer of hope, Jay finally decided on her own to do the procedure. It was hard not to grin at the idea, but she managed to keep the expression off her face. Ashley was so sure Jay would be able to do it, she was sure she would like through the procedure and become a huge asset to the company. “Of course! I’ll set you up right now. It’ll only take a few moments, and a doctor will be here shortly to walk you through everything.” Ashley swished back behind her desk and began typing away furiously. A few moments later, a doctor walked in asking Ashley what he was being called up for. “This woman wants to do the Half. She didn’t call ahead, but she is willing and able to do it.”
The doctor nodded, then looked over towards Jay. “Follow me, we’ll set everything up for you in a moment. Do you know what your core is going to be?”
Ashley waved at Jay as both her and the doctor turned to leave. “Come see me when you’re done, okay!” And that was it. Jay was in the hands of the doctors now. And, before Jay could say she was ready, the doctor had whatever her chosen core was ready to go. All Jay would have to do is lay down and fall asleep. Then, the battle would begin.

Jay shook her head in response to the memorials and explained, "I had a mother who died around 3503. I don't remember what from, but I knew it was quick enough she didn't suffer. I always use to visit her grave every month, but now..."
All she could do was shrug sadly. Her mum would never be remembered by anyone but her now. And she couldn't even visit her either... "I don't want to mourn to an empty pillar or something similar. But thank you for the suggestion regardless."
After holding up her fragment of the cryostasis machine for him to do... whatever to, she did as instructed and slept. After waving to Ashley, anyway. She wasn't rude! Well, that rude anyway.
... At least, she thought so at first. When she got up from her bed, she wasn't sure what to think or expect. She, by insistence of her dad, had some formal training in some obscure art but she'd taken to brawling street style instead. Much quicker, and a lot of the Japanese never expected it. Delinquents generally stood well away from her, even when she wasn't in a mood. Her loneliness only served to further ostracise her from the school effectively.
Wait a minute, was that a rock... thing? A golem dog? Did it have flames inside it? Oh god, this was going to hurt wasn't it? She supposed so long as she was in her dream, she could still beat it though. Dream rules... well, rule!

Jay moved without hesitating - after all, her or it - and immediately launched into a left hook aimed at the beast's head to stagger it. She'd then aim for a swift kick to its abdominal area to throw it off guard and land her follow-up, a dropkick to the face. It's surprising how many things relied on the face and near the groin area. Fear really did only work best for fighting. Being afraid of an attack hitting and flinching from it was usually the best result.
She felt surprisingly fearless for once. Maybe because of her dreaming somewhat lucidly? Hmm. Still, even she knew that the mind only knew what it was interpreting. She didn't fancy feeling an imaginary burn for days. She had to be careful with her aim.

The Embersworn let out a loud bark the moment it was free to wander around the vast compounds of the girl’s mind. Whatever the battleground, it was ready for it completely. The thing was an incredibly strong AI designed to have an intimidating presence, that of incredible authority. It needed its presence in her mind to be known, to be heard and felt before anything. It could hear the girl approaching far before the girl's mind formally addressed what what going on, or where the battle was going to take place. It was still ever changing, a field that left many things open for surprises. It turned to the young one, getting low on its feet and hopping to one side. Oh, this was going to be a fun battle. Already, she showed no hesitation, a sign that she wasn’t just going to be flailing about the whole time while trying to fight. Good. That meant it was going to get a lot more out of the fight than it originally intended. It was a lot more fun to squash the determined people into submission than anyone else. A battle that was handed over on a silver platter was never really any fun.
The girl threw a left hook, aiming for the hounds head. It let out a doggish snicker before ducking and dashing to one side, moving faster than it really was used to anymore. It had been in the tube so long, was it really unused to battle? It huffed, focusing once more on the battle. Nevertheless, it was still going to win! The second attack was significantly easier to see coming. A kick to the side, one that would normally be rather debilitating. It, instead, hopped back and landed in a position much like downward facing dog. It opened its maw, exposing its fire-like mouth where flames swirled around inside it. The creature really wasn’t much more than rocks stuck together with fire and molten lava. The kick would miss it completely, causing the creature to laugh. “Fire and brimstone hurts to the touch. Careful when you play with me.” It spoke, it’s voice like molten lava catching fire to anything it touched. It’s dog like face moved up into a molten doggy grin as it wagged its little stump of a tail. Of course, next, she went attack its face. It wasn’t a bad attack, by any means, but it was still something that the girl should have thought twice about doing. The thing was fast, even if it wasn’t used to battles anymore. It jumped back again, falling into the same position. It was having a lot of fun, actually, and it hoped this would be one of those fights that would just drag on for a long while.
The Embersworn let out another boof, continuing to wag its rocky, floating tail. This was too much fun! Suddenly, the creature dashed forward, straight at the girl it was fighting. It would aim to bite her, bite her thin frame where she would be less defended. It would bite down hard, too. It would burn through her flesh more than anything, burn and bite like she melted under its touch. Hmmmmm… To smell the beautiful scent of burning flesh once again! How it longed for it to fill its nostrils once again! It let out a low, ember filled hum. Oh, it hoped to have that scent surround it again. How it longed for the feeling of melted flesh pulse through it’s flames once more.

The land itself looked artificial, lines bordering lines that made up fragment of each section of the world pulsating a deep and dark blue. The floor itself was smooth and reflected no light, yet still only a pale blue. One could mistake it for almost anything, but its texture was unnaturally smooth, even for plastic or metal, and too rocky in composition to tell what it could really be. What could pass as trees littered the outskirts of their current fighting arena, but imitations were only imitations in Noire's mind. Above, 2x2 segmented cubes floated above sparsely, although from below it was impossible to tell how similar it was to this cube. The sky itself was unlit but somehow maintained white colouration in opposition of the other colours. It was very... uh... vapourwave-like, really. One could probably maintain their calmness here if they ever wanted to. Off in the distance, one could faintly discern a very tall cuboid shape. One might say it was a big version of the cubes, but another would argue it was a skyscraper.
Oh, the fight! She huffed in annoyance when her first punch didn't connect and growled when her kick missed. How hard could a bunch of moving rocks be to hit? It was literally just a bunch of rocks! The raven-haired girl's face twisted into anger at such a nuisance creature, but then realised what it was about to do when it evaded her dropkick and switched to horror promptly. That thing was about to chomp her foot or some other part of her with hell knows how hot lava!
She moved fast, faster than she thought she was capable of. Scrambling, she threw her body off to the side and rolled into a crouching position. She sighed, but found herself panting. She really didn't want to find out how hard it could hurt her. She pushed herself to stand up and tried to remember not to get pushed into... whatever the heck those tree things behind her were. She wasn't really focused on her surroundings at this point...
"Just lose already!" She growled at it, her fear mutating into frustration. She chose to throw three simple punches, left jab, then right jab, then uppercut, as she pushed herself forwards and getting into its personal space. Predictable, but she was NOT losing because she compromised her own safety like before with that dropkick. At least, not if she couldn't finish it off. She'd have to block or throw it off-guard when it counter attacked.

The thing barked out a laugh. Just lose already? How humorous. To think the girl really thought she could just win. Just like that! It was almost adorable! The rocks on the side of its face moved up into a doggish grin. She was pretty good, that was for sure, but that just meant for a challenging victory. Whatever happened from there, it meant she was going to do her best. It was very adorable, to say the least.
She finally had made her environment, too. It was like what people thought being inside a computer looked like in the 80’s. It was brilliant, actually. Well, aside from the fact that is was so incredibly outdated that the creature let out a sigh. Still, at least it had a decent grasp on its surroundings. Or, at the very least, grow used to its movements a lot quicker than it would have otherwise. Damn it, it wanted a body again! It wanted to be free from this prison, where it felt weak and useless. It had no duty in this god forsaken facility, and that made it more lost than anything. An AI needed something to do, some cause to seek the solution of. It needed to attack and kill, and destroy whole cities. But here? It did nothing. Nothing wore it down until that was all it was worth. Nothing.
And yet, the fight continued. The girl managed to avoid its attack. It was getting weak, getting slow. It gritted its teeth, frustrated that it was unable to make a simple attack land on a kid. A mere teen who had likely walked in on a whim. And soon, the child made her move to attack it again! A few punches, nothing too much to worry about, really. The first one came from the left, her fist moving fast. She was swift, sure, but the AI was still faster. The creature moved out of the way fast enough, sliding to the right before anything could really connect. Her next attack was from the right, easy and simple. She seemed to have picked up on her style from the street. It was rash, and she brawled like someone was trying to steal her wallet. The next attack was an uppercut. Another simple attack. She may have had a brawling style, but it was easy to tell that she hadn’t grown up having to fight for her life. Perhaps it was just something she picked up. Either way, she didn’t scrap, and she didn’t hesitate. This was good, at least in battle. It was still just so sad that she had to die.
Its own attack was one that had structure, had skill from its days on the field. Refined from its years of use and practice. And then burned by disuse in the ******** tube. It charged at the girl, blasting forth into her stomach. It wanted to bash its head into her stomach, set her on fire and watch her body burn before she finally gave up her body for its cause. Give her body to it so it could ruuuuuuuin the Baiter base.

Jay yelped in surprise. Hell to the nope. She jumped, her hands landed on its back and she flipped over it dodging rather expertly in the process. Landing on her feet and hopping to take the recoil of the hit, she sighed in exhaustion. Was she holding her breath during this fight? Well, she was anticipating the attacks a lot better than she fought. Did she like this?
A little bit, she figured. Her own grin creeped onto her own face as she chased after the horse, feeling a lot more flexible as she started getting into the fight a bit more. After all, this was technically a dream right? Well, she was asleep.
She open-palmed the butt of the Lavahorse, striking with the heel of her left palm, before following up with a punch on the same hand then flipping and slamming her right fist in a turn into its right flank. Wish she'd imagined a sword or something. Wait, no, a hammer! A hammer would do so much more damage.

Code Core 1
A piece of the shell from the cryostasis construction she helped build. A piece of salvage she intended to keep for reverse engineering later, it now forms part of her integral defense by sapping the energy from enemy attacks. Also so some idiot doesn't just climb in and get stuck for another century. She loved failsafes... Tier: Standard Bonus: Single Stat - Defense 20%
