The basilisk began to stir and roared directly in Chel's face; an entirely unpleasant sensation considering nothing had been in it's stomach but rotting, death and decay.
She stumbled backwards and somewhere she heard Jack's wolfwhistle, but she couldn't let herself be distracted when she had a pair of jaws a few feet from her face.
The mouth came forward and Chel fired shots down its throat. It reminded her of something from one of her video games; smoking bits of flesh erupting in the beast's belly. Except unlike her video games, she could smell and hear every disgusting response the basilisk's body gave.
"Take yer time Jack, really," she hollered at him, "Ain't like this sucks d**k or nothin'."

"Yeah, yeah—"
With a sound like glass breaking, he finally managed to free Chris from his prison. He didn't look good at all for his time there, and a morbid thought that the crystals might be draining them entered his mind. Quickly Jack dragged him out of the line of fire and did cursory checks, pulse, breath, dilation, the works.
"Unconscious but breathing!" he reported.

Chel gave Jack his own whistle, letting out a sigh of relief. If Chris was breathing and in their possession, that was more than enough for her. It was more than her vision had given her.
The basilisk went down and Chel gave it more than a few double taps to be sure. A surprise feint was not something she needed right now. The monster dissipated, and in its place left its long skeleton, as it had been before something or someone had tampered with it. Chel ripped out a few of the smaller teeth as souvenirs, but would leave examination to Jack later.
She hobbled over to where he was treating Chris and sat down somewhat dramatically, pushing into his form and being annoying by getting in his way because of it. "Bandaids and kisses for my booboos," she whined. That she could joke meant she wasn't that injured.

Chris looked gaunt, but at least that seemed the worst of it. He was just propping the guy up against several thick stalagmites when Chel came crashing down.
"As you wish," Jack said graciously, grunting as she all but fell over him. "Did you get—" He saw the glint of teeth and grinned. It had become second nature to look for souvenirs now. "Sweet."
I slinging his backpack, he dug for a field kit and began to examine her for any of the deeper gouges the basilisk might have managed to make. In his other hand was the water bottle from earlier, about halfway full. "Nice work there, Xena."

"Xena?" she parroted after him. "What's that mean?" She didn't watch your nerd shows.
She reached over to take his water bottle, not yet opening it (the sensation of water filled lungs hadn't quite left her, but she was going to work up the energy to swallow it down in a bit anyways). Her eyes scanned over her unconscious cousin. "Is he ...?"

"I don't know, some warrior princess show from the 80s or something." Pop culture osmosis struck again!
"He's okay now," Jack added, following her glance. "Stable, at least. I'm not sure if he's still experiencing a crystal vision or what, but his heart rate isn't abnormal and his vitals seem strong." He had a pallor, but really that wasn't anything to a hunter at this point without cause to fear it.

"Bandages," she repeated, pointing to her back as she began to strip her coat off and pull her shirt off. She could feel the wet sensation of blood from minor scratches seeping through the cloth already; slamming her back into the cave wall wasn't fun.

He complied and popped the field kit open, readying the rubbing alcohol and runic bandages. "And kisses," Jack reminded her with a tug of his lips, smooching the air before bearing down on the worst of the cuts. "Going to guess you haven't fought something that was partially undead like that before?"

"I have," she told him, thinking of the China dragon mostly. "Just not ... that big." Big was new.
She looked at him and said, "Y'make it sound like you have?"

"Other than Chinabreath, no." He pressed a bandage tighter over one of the larger wounds. "I was angling for maybe your previous Sun expertise having some insight as to what the hell might have happened for something like that to exist at all. Right now all I can think of is just basic Fear mutation and-or good old fashioned necromancy." Jack looked up. "Unless your artifact might have had something to do with it?"

Chel squeaked under the tight pull, but Jack knew what he was doing. Either that or he was being spiteful.
"Mm. There's undead monsters and stuff. Necromancers, yeah." She sighed into her hand and finally unscrewed the water bottle. "S'why hunting monsters in the first place is kind of ********' stupid. They can just come back as scarier versions."
She took a short drink of the water, took a deep breath and then took a longer drink. "Probably not a necromancer. Doubt one could live down here. They still need food and s**t." She looked back at the basilisk and added, "But that thing's been dead a while." It didn't add up. It was neither undead creatures nor necromancy, but somehow a combination.
Either way she gave Jack a sideways grin and said, "Ooh the plot thickens~"

He scoffed softly. "I'd rather have a little less mystery gang right now, thanks." Nevertheless, he matched Chel's crooked grin , gave her a short kiss, and lightly pat her shoulder, a signal that she was now free to move again.
"Think we should move him out of here?" he asked with a glance towards Chris. "I'm a little concerned that skeleton will pop back to life."

"Naw, you live for this s**t," she told him, taking the pat to rotate her torso and make sure everything was hunky dory. She took a deep breath in; it was always weird adjusting to breath with bandages over you.
She looked over to her cousin and shook her head. "Hm. It's just as dangerous out there as it is in here" The skeleton got a cocky tilt of her head. "F'it comes back to life I could just kick its a** again."
Yet she nodded. "But the crystals freak me out more than monsters do. Go check out the skeleton for stuff you want to take, then we'll move him."

"Would also rather not have to use all our supplies just to handle one damn skeleton either."
He eyed the skeleton warily, then approached to get his sample quickly: a smaller rib bone he could fit into his pack with some effort. The thing really was big.
Jack tried not to think about the crystals as he stuffed the sample in, closed up his medkit, and slung the bag over his shoulder. "Wonder if we'll be able to swing back around to where we left our things," he mused aloud as he leaned over and picked up Chris. "Alright. Away from the water and the forest, then."

Chel held out a hand to help carry Chris, but it seemed Jack had the entirety of the beefcake on his own. She bobbed her head along to what Jack was saying. One detail unsettled her. "Y'know. That room Chris was in- there was no water there. He didn't wash up."
She watched him wobble with both. "Can I at least get the bag?"
